Favourite youtube channels
« on: December 04, 2019, 12:54 AM »
I stumbled upon this guy's channel today and have been addicted to it:
https://www.youtube....Zs_ltFFvn0FDHT6kmoXA

A couple of random videos:

He's a british tourist who knows russian very well and some other languages, and just heads off into the remotest villages in the soviet union, india, bolivia, etc.  And just makes friends.  He's fearless and just goes with the flow wherever he is..

I've been watching this series of AI-related podcast interviews by Lex Fridman, from MIT.. Some of them are incomprehensible cutting-edge physics discussions, but are still interesting.
Many of these interviews are with people who have been very influential in the kind of AI research that I was involved with -- people trying to understand big picture issues of how to build machine learning that works in ways similar to the way the brain.

This channel is very charming.. Tribal people tasting and reviewing foods from other countries:

The oldest guy is funny -- he is always a bit grumpy and compares the foods negatively to some mythical food from his country, or complains that the foods are ok but are mixed or prepared wrong :)

We need more posts in this thread!

I really like this guy's videos on how technology works -- he does a good job of explaining interesting issues:

[Technology Connections]

I've been watching quite a few of those videos as well. Interesting stuff.

Kind of similar, I also find the information from the Practical Engineering channel to be very interesting. Here's a sample video of Mechanically Stabilized Earth:

Here's the channel link: https://www.youtube..../user/gradyhillhouse

I spend more time in YouTube Premium than all the other streaming services combined. Interesting people making consistently interesting content is uncut brain candy for me:

Leah Shutkever -- this woman will eat anything; not a pretender like so many.

Shutup & Play Guitar Tutorials (relaxing to watching it played perfectly)

Hinkoki Cat -- Japanese family transformed their flat around the cats

Rick Beato on Rock Music, those who made it great, and why corporations killed it

WORTH A LOOK:

Wolf Conservation Center (funny)

Atomic Tests Channel (Hmmm...)

Chris Stuckman Movie Reviews (If it doesn't have a story, it's probably going to suck)

Lock Picking Lawyer (like passwords, nothing is really secure)

74 Airline Pilot Explains/Debunks (trying to cure rampant idiocracy with regard to aviation)

Hi Zaine!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, I was just thinking to add a few more channels to it.

Technology Connections discusses some of the cool details of common inventions, very watchable:

Techmoan, another highly watchable well produced channel where a guy reviews usually very old retro media (walkmen, videodiscs, etc.) technology and does serious discussion of its history:

On Cinema at the Cinema.  I think Tim Heidecker is one of the most brilliant comedians ever.  It's very dry long form humour -- most people won't like it.  But for me, it's some of the best that ever was.

[ that's just a short compilation it doesn't give you the real flavor of it.  Long playlist here: https://www.youtube....oDTYwY7v_V12KJfQueXZ ]

How about asking about a channel?

I enjoyed the following about ice recently:

https://www.youtube..../watch?v=b9a36vsQh80

A bit weak toward the end -- lacking footage / images, but still fun.

Can't honestly say that the channel is a favorite as I've only seen one thing from it.

Does anyone watch this channel?

Three of my favorites:

Sanjay C

Gear reviews, how-tos, and news for musicians.

Uncle Doug

Down home tube electronics tech.

HorrorBabble

My regular dose of vintage Lovecraftian eldritch horror from HPL and his contemporaries of the Weird Tales era along with some of the best new talent.

Over the past year or so I've gotten into videos by the LockPickingLawyer. He seems to be a master lockpicker, with over 1,000 videos of him showing off various locks and picking them on video, and sometimes he even takes them apart to show us how the internals work, etc.

As someone who has an interest in digital security, I've found it interesting to see how much of physical security is also largely easily bypassed due to "exploits" or design flaws that have been known about for decades but lock manufacturers keep making new locks vulnerable to them anyway.

He's also done a few "blind picks" where he picks a lock he's never seen before all in one take on the video, so you know he's the real deal.

And he also shows off some unusual (at least in the USA) designs or vintage/ancient locks:

I could go on with more videos but I'll stop there.

His channel got me interested in learning how to lockpick for myself. I see it as a kind of puzzle-solving hobby, like sudoku or crosswords, but potentially with practical, real-world application. So I got a lockpicking toolkit and an acrylic practice lock for Christmas (both of which are cheap pieces of junk from banggood which didn't arrive until about a week ago). After opening the practice lock a few dozen times in the first day, I started having more and more trouble with it to the point where I can rarely open it anymore. I think that due to the poor quality materials and workmanship of the lock, the keyway has slightly changed shape and so my turning tool can no longer apply torque properly. But I'm too much of a noob to know for sure what the exact cause of my troubles are. But all of that is tangential to this thread, so I'll stop blabbing about that, as well.

Have watched a good few of his videos. Very entertaining -- he's got a great voice too. I can imagine really enjoying picking locks :D but cant imagine making the effort to learn. Nice to hear about your start

RMC - The Cave: https://www.youtube.com/c/RMCRetro

As the about says, it's really "a celebration of retro computers, games and history."

Neil recently wrote a book, and has a lot of interview with devs, computer artists, etc.

Another interesting channel is deramp5113: https://www.youtube.com/user/deramp5113

Tons of practical demo and explanations with the venerable Altair 8800 and a modern remake/clone.

I cant say I have any favourite YT channels -- I mostly listen to music or watch snooker/chess/boules, but there's a couple of channels that I occasionally enjoy, that I think others here might enjoy too.

The History Guy

Robertson, Phillips, and the History of the Screwdriver

----------------------------------

ExplainingComputers
has some fairly basic stuff (which has helped me) and some more exotic:

e.g. Old PC Upgrade #2: SSD Boot Drive or Raspberry Pi Devastator Robot #4: Pygame & Speed Control

----------------------------------

Glen And Friends Cooking
often cooking/baking using old recipes e.g.

1892 Galt Cookbook Yeasted Coffee Cake - Old Cookbook Show - Glen And Friends Cooking

Some of these lawn care guys have long gone insane, and then there's this guy in Florida who pressure washes giraffes in customers' driveways, mows when he feels like it, and never leaves his wry sense of humor at home:

Then if you enjoy old people being tortured slowly and in expensive ways, tour a few of the RV channels on YouTube. These RV army of geezers will make you feel like a genius for the road you didn't take. Murphy's Law applies in full force in the RV world (Steve Lehto still tells people: "DON'T BUY AN RV!") Here's one harmless, overly cautious couple who hooked up after 60, Liz and Paul, and are not immune to weekly trouble:

If you dislike the concept of RV's that much, you'll hate channels like this one about tiny houses (on or off wheels).  :P

While I would not be caught dead in 90% of these things, there are some that actually do look nice and contain some pretty smart ideas about furniture and placement of furniture/devices/bedding.
