For the unread topics list I haved switch from using 2 icons in front of each message to using Jibz icon to indicate when you have participated in a topic; it is also now used on the main message list for a board.
Keep in mind the new indicator that shows you have participated in a topic is only shown when the icon for the topic is standard.  Special topic icons will now show such an indicator.

Here's how it looks now:
[ Invalid Attachment ]

I think that's ok since we rarely use topic icons other than the default one (in fact normal users are not given the choice of changing the topic icon when they post) -- that's to keep down the visual noise.  I sometimes use a special icon on newsletters and other official announcements.

If we really wanted to show an indicator regardless of the topic icon, we could probably do it by changing to some css that makes use of a small overlay.  Jibz maybe you can make me a tiny transparent image with just your overlay? Or we could use a different overlay image if people think they can improve on the one jibz chose.

To expand on that bug...I tried quoting and attaching a file...just to see what happened (I will edit if it did something odd)

//EDIT - Heh, so yeah...it takes YOUR attachment, and just plops it in there...that could be problematic if you are quoting a post with an image, and replying with an image :P

Ok i'll look into it.. the attachment mod we are using now is not the code i originally wrote for the old version of the forum.  Now we are using a version of this mod that i have been tweaking for our needs.  The author of that mod did a wonderful job with it and added a lot of nice features.  He even added the ability to refer to attachments from other messages in quotes, but there are some subtleties and im going to have to go back and look at tweaking it.

My memory is that when i was making changes to the code, i decided that we should basically not try to use the feature that tried to grab images from quoted posts -- though i can't remember exactly why (i think i just concluded that it wouldn't work reliably and would lead to more confusion), but what i clearly need to do if we do disable that feature, is make sure that quoted text does not have its images replaced and instead gets text like the old forum saying [see attachment in quoted message].

will we again have a button, making colourful posts?

the basic approach i have taken is to keep some bbc code functionality available, while making it a little less inviting.

So the color tag is still available to use, but there is no dedicated button for it.  I think there used to be large dropdowns for color and font size, which took up a lot of space.

Instead, there is one button that combines font size and color change:
Screenshot - 9_6_2015 , 11_21_38 AM.png.

Clicking this will insert both a font size and font color tag like so:

So, if you want some custom font you can use that button and then edit the details.

My thinking was that this had two advantages:
 • First, it helps keep the number and size of buttons down to a cognitively manageable level.
 • Second, it discourages people from playing around with font colors and sizes unless they are really determined to.

Having said that, we do now have some spare room for new buttons, and I am happy to add more bbc code buttons that people think might be important.

Well, I think the set of bbc-buttons is quite on-par with the purpose of the (quick)reply forms.

I'd be more interested in getting the buddy-list visible in the current user list at the forum-frontpage by them having a different color (or colour for the UK based members) like old dc had

Can you elaborate on that -- remind me what it used to look like.  seems like a trivial fix once i know what i'm looking for.

To clarify, it looks to me from looking at the html of the page, the members in the member list i think you are talking about, are being colored/styled differently based on whether they are buddies, admins, etc.
But it may just be that the differentiations are subtle (bolding, etc.).

So first step is for you to tell me if indeed they are being styled different just not clearly enough, or is there some other problem that we are looking at different things, etc.

The only difference I currently see is for the members that I clicked on their name to view their profile. Admins used to be red (saw that when you had un-hidden your status for a short while) and buddies used to be boldface, and possibly dark-blue, but it was quite different from both 'visited link' and 'un-visited link'. Now buddies aren't recognizable at all.

can you just confirm to me that we are talking about the same list? maybe a screenshot, or if you view source, do you see that indeed your buddies are being shown differently with <strong> or <em> and its just hard to see the differences?

Having said that, we do now have some spare room for new buttons, and I am happy to add more bbc code buttons that people think might be important.

I'l go all sideways and say "watch out for the FireFox-Chome wars".

I have *zero* interest in whether it's a Mozilla Gecko or Google Blink engine. I am a Software UI guy. Give me the existing program and I can probably find a few new things to do with it.

But I *abhor* this whole "reduce noise" approach that then leads you to a single gear icon and ... oh look! they removed 77% of the features along the way! But look! It's a Gear Icon! It's so simple! Who can argue simple?!

Uh ...

So y'all in the chat room have seen my haphazard experiments with FF clones. And believe me, that big new announcement "all add-ons will drop Mozilla API and have to be (our competitor) compatible in X time frame" ... is DEF a big game of poker!

This.  So much this.

Also, a minor annoyance, when you select and quote, it puts a space at the beginning of your message after the quote.  So OCD me has to go back to the beginning of the message that I reflexively type and remove that space.

Not sure. No spaces here. But I don't count.

Re quoting:
previously the quote would be placed where the cursor was in the reply box.
Now it always goes to the end of whatever text is in the reply box.

I can see advantages to both methods, so just pointing it out in case it hasn't been considered

I can't make it happen now, though it happened just prior to this.  I'll keep an eye on it.  Like I said, it was just an annoyance.  But under certain conditions (not sure what they are), there's an extraneous space when I start typing a reply.

Erm...We have NOTHING to do with that website...how could we possibly control what they install on their own forum?  That's like you asking us to publish a story on bbc.com...it doesn't belong to us...I am assuming this is what you mean...but unless you decide to speak to me in something resembling English, I am afraid I don't have the time, nor patience to try figure it out anymore.

Stephen.  Let it go.  Seriously.  I've been down this path, and it's frustrating and leads nowhere.
