Now that we have discussed what FTP clients people like and use the most, I was wondering what free FTP server people thought was "best" and what pay FTP server people thought was "best".

FileZilla server doesn't do everything, but almost and it's a freaking rock! Pay servers, hmmmm.

For payware FTP servers, I prefer g6ftp server. Been a client of theirs since 1997 back before BP bought out their original offering, and got a free upgrade to v3 which now works like a charm and has even more functionality. For freeware, I cant say as I've never used anything besides G6.

Now, for the topic (which contradicts your post), the best freeware ftp client, in my opinion, is filezilla and the best payware one USED to be leapftp, but that was left to stagnate so now I would have to say SmartFTP.

IMHO WarFTPD is the best free ftp server (for windows...)

for best free ftp clients (Windows), I would choose FileZilla, and after that would be ~~SmartFTP~~* and WinSCP..

For best pay ftp client, I choose FlashFXP (but doesn;t suppport SFTP..) out of all the top players (CuteFTP, WS_FTP, etc. etc.)

FlashFXP has a good site manager (some thing FileZilla lacks; password protecting your sites, etc.), nice GUI, good features for most FTP sessions, and the price tag: $25, free upgrades

edit: FlashFXP price was $5 short

edit 2: SmartFTP no longer offers the free version

never tried a pay ftp server - only freeware

I used one that starts in T - either typsoft (http://en.typsoft.com/) or tftpd (http://tftpd32.jounin.net/) not sure.

update: actually looking at the web pages I think I did use both. Typsoft most recently and that worked really well.

I'm confused.

Subject says client but you folks are talking server. Where is this Best FTP Client thread that is mentioned in the first post? And I am curious to see if it has been updated with recent products as I am thinking about purchasing an FTP client if it is better than Filezilla and WinSCP.

Right, the main question was a client - not a server. A lot of file-copiers support ftp-access like Directory Opus - it´s working fine and is rather flexible for its job. Sometimes I use Filezilla.

flashfxp is the best ftp client IMHO. It's paid-for, but you can use it past the trial period if you can put up with its nag.

Filezilla would get my vote. It is able to continue downloading files even after my VPN connection to the FTP server is disconnected. It is very nice to have an overzealous ISP that throttles longer ongoing connections by simply cutting those sessions off.

Now I have to mention that the ISP is also the national telephone company and it wants to make money by selling overpriced telephone ticks on international lines... so any connection that is open for a longer period (like Skype) through this ISP will be cut short without warning and at their discretion.

Ah well, such is life...

as a stand-alone freeware, Filezilla gets my vote but as Crush mentioned, sometimes i would just use the ftp plugin contained in my file-manager apps.

Stagnant or not, I still like LeapFTP; I'm still using it today on Win7 x64 and it does just fine as always. Simple, clean, straight forward interface that just plain works.

I have had occasion to (need) use FlashFXP also, but as a rule I stick with Leap.

It has a nice interface and can do FXP, but the version I checked couldn't be FileZilla for speed when it came to TLS-enabled servers. *shrug* - I stick with FZ these days, the interface is amazingly ugly but it does the job.

i use Filezilla when accessing ftp.dcmembers.com since the ftp server went FTPES and it worked from day one without much problems.

What i use as a client tends to be penguinet - had it forever - or total commander - had it forever too, so not much help here

I nearly always use Total Commander these days, but when I used a stand-alone FTP program it was AceFTP Pro. It's the only FTP program I have found that allows you to move files in one operation rather than copying them & then having to delete them as a separate operation.

I am somewhat unfamiliar with this territory. Odd, but I have never tried any of the FTP clients listed here and the one I use is CoffeeCup Direct FTP and was not mentioned here. The main reason I liked it was it allows me to edit my HTML on the server without having to dn/ld -> edit -> up/ld. Is this a common feature among FTP clients?

By the way, there is a $9 Sale going on right now. One thing I like is a "Live Chat," but I haven't done too much research on alternatives.

BTW, the Cyberduck folks have released a first beta version for Windows:

I applied as a tester (via mail) and noticed that the current beta 2 won't start when you don't use Aero ... good start.

Seriously, looks like a really good alternative, including FileZilla import.
Waiting for beta 3 which includes the fix for the error reported by me ...

not sure about other but FileZilla can do this and so does PSPad (a text editor with built-in ftp features). i think all these 'direct edits' involve some downloading to a temp folder on the hard-disk and re-uploaded after an edit without the users' intervention..
