Hello everyone.

I hope you are all fantastic. It seems like a lifetime ago that I was last active on DC. I do miss the gang - the website as well as the IRC channel. I REALLY apologize for taking so long to make this post. I found out about it late and then it was longer yet before I made posted this message.

Let's see, the last time I was on DC was two states ago. I was in Louisiana at the time. Then I moved to Texas. In that year after Ann and I moved, I moved 7 times that year. It was horrible!!!! Sadly, since that time (2010) my wife and both my dogs (children) died. Incredibly, that was just over 5 years ago already that Ann died. It took me a while, but I eventually got a good job again and finally got back on my feet. Like many Americans, work now keeps me too busy, but I generally like what I do and my colleagues.

As some of you know, I have lived with pain for 15 years now. I still struggle with this, but am generally completely independent and I am managing the pain now with vigorous exercise much better than I did in the past.

Now I live in North Carolina where I finished my education centuries ago and met my wife. I was in the mountains for a while (western North Carolina near Tennessee) and now I am on the coast (eastern North Carolina). As some of you might have seen from JoTo's post, I took a trip to Germany last year. It was my first time off North America. I travelled there with my sister and visited JoTo and we stayed with his work colleague. Of course I loved Germany, particularly the extra sharp mustard, maultachen, Swabian pretzels, spaetzle, beer, and the people that we met. We had a wonderful trip.

All of you take care!
Love, KenR

Living Room / Looking for e-Books/e-Docs (and Happy New Year to all)
« on: December 26, 2009, 01:45 PM »
Hello all,

I am looking for information about where I can get ebooks (edocs) that I can read on my computer. If anyone knows anything about where they can be obtained or resources in this area, I would really appreciate it if people would be share any/all information about what they know.

In addition to information about where I can obtain e-books, I would also appreciate any information people know about software that will read text aloud, including ebooks and web pages.

Thanks so much & again, a joyous (and financially good) New Year to you all!
Ken

MetaRoot,

What is the update (within major versions) upgrade AND upgrade (from one major version to the next) policy for those who decide to purchase your program? For tho software buying addicts among us, who could resist buying it with that ENORMOUS DC discount you have offered??? Do we get all future versions free though (please please please) or what exactly?

Thanks, Ken

P.S. Best of success with your startup company!

Twice I've tried to install this program and twice Norton AV2010 has deleted it, with a notice about suspicious activity detected. Whilst I'm sure it's a false positive given that others seem to be having no problem I thought it worth mentioning because there may well be something the author can do to prevent this happening.

Any thoughts ?

I am having the same problem.  I am using NIS v17.1.0.19 under Win 7. It notified me the installer was engaging in "suspicious behavior" and removed it. Perhaps it's also worth mentioning that under Details, it says "Very Few Users, Risk High". This was the first time I tried to install the program.

On the bright side, the program looks great. The cost seems very reasonable for what the program does. Thanks for developing it and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for giving DC members the generous discount.

Post New Requests Here / Re: time delay power down
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:30 PM »
Raghu,

I would suggest that you try DShutdown (http://dimio.altervista.org/) if you have not. It is the most full-featured of these programs that I have found. The front page shows his awards indicating I'm not the only one who likes his software.

... or just backup (create an image of) your operating system and then restore it when things get to nutty. This is what I do. That way, I only need to focus on one OS. Running things in an artificial env. is protective, but doesn't give much info about how it will fit it with everything else. For these two reasons, I prefer the backup and restore method.

Sweet! I feel so helpful! :)

LOL. OH, I realized after I wrote my message that I had also changed the name of the folder. That might have made a difference as well. So, now you can feel EVEN SWEETER. Seriously, thanks again for the suggestions Hirudin.

What happens if you try to move the Task Bar over there?

Yes, I had done nearly all the things you suggested (I did not think of Safe Mode), but none worked. This time though, in addition to dragging the Task Bar over, I tried setting it to auto-hide. As with other toolbars, when I attempted to do so, it complained that it could not do so because there was already a hidden toolbar there and left it not hidden. In addition though, IT POPPED THE HIDDEN TOOLBAR UP AS A NON-DOCKED WINDOW, which I could then delete.

Thanks for all the suggestions and inspiration to get rid of it Hirudin!

This may not be the place for this question, but does anyone know what the difference between the pro and home version will be?

Thanks, Ken

P.S. Sorry if this reply is sorely out of place or so obvious most barnyard animals would know the answer.

Right click taskbar.
Is it in the toolbar list with 'quick launch' and the others?

Good question. I should have said in my post that it is NOT listed there.

Help! (please)

For several years, I have used a hidden toolbar on the left side of the screen on a computer configured with XP. Now however, when I move the mouse to the left side of the screen, the toolbar will not emerge. When I try to put another toolbar there, it tells me I cannot because I have a toolbar there. I cannot find anyplace to close the toolbar or manipulate it in any way. Can someone please tell me how can I get the toolbar to work or close it?

Thanks very much!

I probably should have mentioned this in my last post, but I'll share my solution with you. I used to run around scurrying for the best ways to put divx files on DVD & I finally got fed up one day & bought a DVD player capable of playing divx files that had a USB port on the front of it.

Now I just put my video files onto my USB flash drive & plug it into the DVD player. Saved me a crap-load of money in blank DVD discs.

Cool idea Innuendo. I'll definitely use that approach when I can.

Ken,

I have good success with Ashampoo Burning Studio 9. It supports a wide variety of video formats. It sells for $49.99 but if you click on the "Service Letter" option on the menu bar and scroll down a bit on the new page you will see an offer where you can purchase the program for $29.99.

mwfuss,

I have been using Burning Studio 8. I found there were video formats that it wouldn't read though. Have video formats been added from 8 to 9? When I looked at it, it looked llike the changes were elsewhere, though I forget the big change now.

Thanks, Ken

Hello.

Great start to the thread. Thanks for the comments folks. Hopefully a lot more members will comment.

I am a little surprised that no one has mentioned ConvertX to DVD, Video DVD Maker, or DVD Flick. All of these are encoders and writers. Do people dislike these three programs for some reason? Negative feedback about software to warn me away from problematic software is also welcome!

Again, thank you very much.

the first thing you should probably decide is what best matches what you want:
  • Do you want to have control over creating title pages, chapters with menu items that link to each one with a nice label or picture, etc.
  • Or do you just want to take a bunch of video files and click "go" and have it build a compatible dvd where you can play each of the video files.

Different programs tend to focus on helping you do 1 of those 2 things.  The first case means more powerful flexible program that will have a higher learning curve.  The second case you should be able to find a really dead simple solution.

Great thoughts Mouser. So what are the best of each?  :eusa_dance:

Hi. I have a variety of video files that I would like to put on DVD. What is the best program (features, ease of use, etc.) that will convert the file if it needs to be in a different format and then write it to DVD in a format that my DVD player will recognize and play it. The file does NOT need to be freeware. I would rather pay for better software than have less able freeware.

Thanks, Ken

Since no one else has done so, I am really glad to be the first to say

"Hey Don, thanks for adding dual panes".

I know you have been asked to add this feature over and over and over and ... While you always resisted in the past, you gave the users dual panes this time.
So here's to you! :beerchug:

I think i can hear the crickets..

Well, don't take it personally Jesse. I love all your software. Since I am using DOpus though, I just use it to generate my launch bars rather than running an additional program to do it.

This is wonderful. Better copyright it (can you do that?) before someone else does. Also, at the next fundraiser, I expect to see a "Cody Plushie" level of donation so I am getting back a cody for my donation!

Ken

NB: No boos, hisses, or other simiar responses, please  :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com... again!

Man, there are two programs I can't use. If KenR is using XMM or DVDP, I cannot in good conscience use either :/

;)

LOL!!! That's right Josh, you can't. So you just go on using using Movie Collector. Keep making angry posts in the forum that get deleted, paying for the new required service, and buying the latest required update because the last one is no longer supported.  Enjoy that collection of DVDs Josh!

I already moved to DVD Profiler. I still have MOC v 5.6 but I don't believe I will be going forward with it. It is working fine for me now but I'm sure that won't last, as Alvin is trying to get all users to upgrade of course.

You know, I am not quite that upset with the changes he made. It is his attitude toward users and his terrible demeanor that I don't like. He gets too offensive with his users. I don't need that!

Jim

Yeah, I know what you mean Jim. While I have my issues with the software, I am going to stop using it because of the way Alvin does business and abuses his customers. Also, I like to support the development of good software whenever I can and this seems like the perfect opportunity.

To those ends,  I just bought Extreme Movie Manager (for only $10), though I haven't started using it yet. After looking at DVD Profiler though, I like the looks of it too and all future versions after purchase are free of charge. So, I'd like to purchase it and support its development as well, but surely NO ONE would EVER buy yet another program largely to support the competition's software development.  :P
