you tube downloader for a non techie
« on: July 19, 2008, 05:40 AM »
what software(free), firefox extension, or web browser would you recommend for those technology challenged people?  Something that can be done in as few clicks as possible.  I have a client that is wanting to be able to download and show offline you tube videos.

any recommendations??

I know real player can do it but I am not a big fan of it.

thanks,
Dave

thanks mouser, I did search today but this thread didn't show up.  But I did read that thread a couple of days ago and thats when I learned about Real Player.

I have been googling this and also searching through the ff extensions.  I will have to see if she could copy and paste the url into youtube downloader.

1. Copy the youtube page url to clipboard.
2. Go to keepvid.com with any browser of your choice and paste the youtube url in the box and click the button.
3. Right click the link they give you and save the target to your hard drive, renaming it and including a .flv extension.
4. Use Media Player Classic to play them on your PC.

Personally I like UnPlugged, though the last time I checked it was not updated for FF3.

- I have now had the opportunity to actually try the Better YouTube scripts, and I mostly think good of it.

When you arrive the video you want to see, you will see a different layout than before, because Better YouTube comes with a flash player of it's own, I can assure that you will like this one better:

byt1.gifyou tube downloader for a non techie

When you click "Download this video", you will quickly be taken to this page where you can choose which video version to get, Normal FLV, HQ FLV, or HQ MP4. If you don't choose within 3 seconds it will start to give you the low Q version. The bottom button is the one I would want, HQ MP4 Stereo version (HQ Flash is 2xMono, not stereo).

I have not yet figured out how to stop it from starting downloading the low quality version, but I guess there is a trick that will sort it out. Other than this, I am very excited about Better YouTube.

Re-reading the thread I only now realize what a terrible lack it has:

Video Download Helper was and is by far the (second-) easiest way (after RealPlayer) to get a video from YouTube.

do you mean date A to date B ?
You'd be looking at a lot of posts there :D unless you're just looking at posts for one or two days or so
Do you know you can sort your search by date (does that help maybe?)

My favourite YouTube downloader is Ashampoo ClipFinder. You can search many video portals (YouTube, Google, Veoh, DailyMotion etc) at a time or just one, if you prefer. You are presented with video thumbnails, and if you want to download something just right click it and select Download (really!). Also you can create new categories for your videos.

ClipFinder is  free, but you have to register. Attention! Someone somewhere complained that he's been "spammed to death" after registering ClipFinder, but I have only received 2 mails / month max. and only because I wanted to get them. Anyway, you might want to use a throwaway address to get the registration key. Just in case.

Usually I find registering very tiresome and suspicious, but in this case I'm glad I did it.  :-*

ClipFinder is for Windows 2000, XP and Vista 32.

I don't know about Comedy Central, but Mouser's <A HREF="https://www.donation...rlsnooper/index.html">URLSnooper</A> and... someone else's <A HREF="http://tetora.orz.ne...gasdown/download.cgi">GetASFStream</A> make a great team in locating and downloading "difficult" video or audio files.

Do you read Japanese, anne_r? GetASFStream is not at all easy to understand how to use.

No, I don't read Japanese and there is no English help. The basic usage is not difficult:
http://forums.afterd...read_view.cfm/161631

Paste the URL of the audio / video file in File - URL Paste - Add and click the red dot. The download starts.

One only learns to use this program by going through the menu and trying everything. Googling might help, too. Or Bablefish translation of the GetASF homepage.

The program itself is in English. In case someone wonders.

Hi Dave,

Simple - find a video you like e.g. http://www.youtube.c...HARCiCWO0&fmt=18 and then add kiss in front of youtube - http://www.kissyoutu...HARCiCWO0&fmt=18 and save.

Requires Java enabled browser.

Cheers :)

Around here we all use DownloadHelper plugin for Firefox. It gets updated frequently, works with a LOT of download sites, and is so easy to use that even non-technical people can use it. Of course, it does appear to be limited to .flv files.

We found the kiss you tube was the easiest method for her.  I tried about 10 methods both online and software download before deciding on the kiss method.

thanks to all!

Try also Movie Saver, it has a very simple interface. It is free after registering by e-mail (in two steps, check your spam folder each time).

This one is  ok but it is so irritating that the user cannot see the titles and text regarding videos. Kind of useless in some ways. Also its converter failed many times.

Is there any software/website that will let me download all the videos uploaded by a user, or saved playlists. Youtube has been deleting a lot of content lately (mostly due to policing by networks) and I'd like to save my favorites.
