very confused: downloading youtube with urlsnooper?
« on: April 09, 2008, 04:37 PM »
So, I'll probably be the most confused person you've ever met.   Im on a Windows Vista Dell Dimension, I downloaded urlsnooper a few days ago, and this is how far I've got in understanding:

First, I searched for a network adapter, and successfully found mine, clicked ok.
Opened the youtube page with the video i wanted to get in my browser...
started "sniff network"
played the youtube video
waited a few minutes
a whole bunch of URL results popped up under the Results list.

And now I'm completely confused at what to do next, more or less didnt understand the next step in the help section:

"· Drag URLs to targets, or right-click to copy to clipboard or launch 3rd party apps."

I'll give ya the youtube URL for the video in case ya need to know that:  http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=n3ez-bqJfg4

And when i type in the URL under the search space to clear out all the crap, its not there.  Am i looking for a wmv, flv, avi video file?

Buuuut, yeeaaah, no clue.   Any help? Please?

thanks,  hq

A lot of people seem to want to use Url Snooper for downloading YouTube videos.

The ironic thing is that downloading youtubes is simple and URL Snooper is really more useful for much harder cases.

Youtube videos use a special protocol, but it's not hard to download them.  you don't need url snooper.

If you want to record youtube videos there is a very good solution, use the firefox browser and get this addon:
https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/3006

(there are a few more firefox addons that also do it also)

Thanks for the quick reponse, very prompt.   Thing is I have the newest version of IE sooooo, I thought FireFox is a completely different browser, and idk about that.

But, is it possible anyways to use urlsnooper for youtube?  and how do u do so?

If you don't want to use Firefox you can use VeohTV to download YouTube (plus video from many other sites too including Veoh itself). Download their player and install it and it adds a toolbar to Internet Explorer. Downloading YouTube videos is then a single click. VeohTV is a separate player that allows you to organise your downloaded clips into playlists and manage the content (so you can delete the clips from your computer just by deleting it in VeohTV player).

It isn't perfect but it isn't a bad solution to your needs.

The download link is at the bottom of the page on the right. See http://www.veoh.com/

If you want more info in Veoh (not from the Veoh website) have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veoh

Just install the latest Real Player.  Each time to play a YouTube video a small tag pops up and asks if you want to record it.  With one click it is done.  All files are saved as .FLV files.

If you don't want to use Real Player, you can use http://keepvid.com/, which is almost as easy.

another web-based tool to download from youtube: TechCrunch.

also with these web-based download tools, you can make a bookmarklet/favelet (depending on your browser preference) to download straight from youtube's page.

a sample bookmarklet:
javascript:document.location='http://keepvid.com/?url='+escape(window.location);

Maxthon 2 can sniff out the flv location of youtube videos and allow you to download them.

With IE, I'd suggest getting the very useful IE7Pro add-on which, among other things, has crash recovery of opened tabs or simply of tabs open when the browser was last closed.  Anyway, to the point... IE7Pro includes an optional user script for downloading YouTube videos.  This script puts a direct download link to the right of the YouTube video window - the video will be downloaded to the destination of your choice (as, if I recall correctly, getvideo.flv, a name which you can change; there is no need to even play the video).  If you don't want to install the IE7Pro add-on, you can find the YouTube video, after playing it, in your Temporary Internet Files folder, here assuming the boot drive is C:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
(sort by size or date to bring the video to the top or nearly so)

Thanks for being "out loud" about your confusion. I shared it. :D

Now I have something that works for me well for the YouTube thing (what a great list of possible free sources in this thread!),
and don't really know what I will use the URL Snooper for ...

... however, all is not lost. URLSnooper brought me here, and now I am a member and I found something else
I really like. So it must have been faite accompli, oui?

this seems to have some online/sharing thing going on - you have to create user name & password & only the first explanatory video on their website is working  -here- that may not be their fault, I'm having some trouble on & off with youtube

Wouldn't it be easier just using an online website such as www.downloadyoutubevideos.com and then using VLC to watch them (assuming you don't want to get into techy details on converting and whatnot)?

Seriously, why waste the disk space on a program and/or addon that you will remember to use once or twice, then forget about?? :-\

(FYI: Searching "Download Youtube Videos" on Google turns up DownloadYouTubeVideos.com as the top result, just in case you were to forget or something (I had to look it up myself, because I forgot the URL))

i normally use KMPlayer but just in case, i keep FLV Player handy. iirc, FLV Player is a pioneer in playing off-line flv files.

There is also the more expensive way to do this: YouTube Music Downloader, a nice looking giveawayoftheday present I had some time ago. I have not yet tried to used it - you know, easy comes, easy goes (out of mind) - but the company's asking price is €20 or $30, so the ambitions should be high, one would like to think. However, somehow I am afraid it is more about good looking, than about doing - but time will show!

This is one more way of spying on what people are watching and wanting to download from youtube. The downloader takes you to place called TubeGotchi and asking for a user name. I hope that when users suggest softwares, they make sure that the person who is looking for an application does not get in a lookinglass sites rings or does not get spyware infections. This has been one of the crappiest applications I have seen for a while.

... does not get spyware infections. This has been one of the crappiest applications I have seen for a while.

1-Click YouTube Batch Downloader from eurekr.com may be a little bad but certainly not all bad. It is probably not very well written, and it really is disappointing with this new TubeGotChi forum, but that can sometimes be expected from this kind of applications, can't it. When they started some years ago, there weren't any commercials or any forum, but people didn't donate, so the company didn't get an income from 1-Click, which may be why they added the forum and the ads. 1-Click is however not dangerous or all crappy. First of all its behaviour on your computer is accepted by the anti-spyware parts of both NOD32 and Outpost Pro. Secondly it is one of the easiest applications for downloading an user's entire channel of videos. I have downloaded a couple of thousand videos with 1-Click YouTube Batch Downloader from eurekr.com, and I have not met any problems or received any spam.

One thing they should change, though, is, to make 1-Click download from lot more ports at a time. For now, one video at a time, it is simply too slow, because YouTube uploading never uses my connection's download capacity. On the other hand, it doesn't use any CPU, so the user can just leave it to download while he is working.

For IE, you can use Trixie and a Greasemonkey script (you may have to try a few till you find one that works well with Trixie)

I have not tried Trixie, as I don't normally use IE, but I have read quite a few reviews that have called it the best available plugin for adding Greasemonkey functionality to IE.

Ghacks article about it from last year: http://www.ghacks.ne...n-internet-explorer/

i recently discovered another youtube downloader - YouChoob.

YouChoob is an application that allows you to download videos directly from the YouTube.com website and save them to a location on your system. YC is the easiest way to download videos as all it requires is the URL address to the page that contains the video.

YouChoob supports downloading from all language versions of YouTube and will automatically download the highest quality version of all videos, if available.
