Need help recreating some music -- full band needed?
« on: May 01, 2021, 08:54 AM »
I've spend the last 7 months or so plugging away at my new YouTube project.. Learning a bunch of new skills, having a bunch of fun.
I recently decided to make a fun retro intro for the YouTube channel, heavily inspired on the intro theme to The Odd Couple, one of my very favorite sitcoms (from the 1970).

I began with a copy of the intro which was about 118 seconds, and got down to 20 (still a bit long), but here it is, scored with the original television show theme music:

So here's my challenge -- I can't really use that original amazing 1970s music by Neal Hefti.. I need to have some original (or licensed) music, but I'd love for it to have a similar sound and feel so it mirrors it's original inspiration.

Is anyone here capable of that or know where I could find someone who was?

I need the full rich sound, so a soloist on the piano or guitar is not going to work.. It needs some horns, drums, etc..

Thoughts?

If you don't get any specific recommendation, you can always search for a freelancer on Upwork or Fiverr. You already have a good brief/job description.

Love the intro.
Thought: send Superboyac a PM, ask him if he'd be interested?

Very cool
Fiver/ Upwork is a good place for this if you do not find anyone here. You could also try reaching out to someone who has done a cover and ask if they could be willing to do it.

The Odd Couple is often used as a starter song for people learning how to do ACappella etc because if is relatively easy to break into parts and offers some good options to explore how to mimic instruments as well as improvising.  I am thinking you might be able to record yourself vocalizing and humming the different parts Bobby McFerrin Style- maybe use a kazoo for the main part - and then sync it.

This would mean deviating from the original feel.

Did a quick search to see if I could find an acapella version and did not find one.  But I did find this from program "Friends"

Yeah perhaps I don't need a full band just a person in front of a computer who is good at music software... Anyone?

Question is, can a covered version be public used without harming any music-rights?
You should get informed who is current copyright holder and ask for permission, than you may use original version instant.
I did made in past a few remixes but was not allowed to make them public avail (in germany it is called GEMA and they act like bountyhunters.)

It's a good question.. I think the ideal thing would be if someone could compose an ORIGINAL piece, 22seconds long, that is inspired and similar to that theme, but not exact.

It's a great intro

I'm using the original for now.. at some considerable risk that I'll have to take those videos down and re-upload them.. I need a custom version asap!

This guy has some decent tips on how you can avoid at least a copyright strike while you look.

Step 4 is where you want to concentrate. Make sure you attribute the music being used. It's already relatively short. If you have audio editing software, you might want to also remix it a bit- don't play it entirely through from beginning to end. But that's tricky to get right.

Here's two versions with music i have license to use.

One that has a similar jazzy feel:

And one completely different and not a great match, but maybe fun for variety and with music by a friends cousin:

But obviously none capture the emotional attachment I have to the Odd Couple theme, so I'd still love someone making a cover of that, or something inspired by it, that I could use.
Or just having some variety of music by friends that I could swap around would be fun..

I like the first one- I don't think the second one really captures the freezing of the frames in the music.

Not to rain on your parade, but I thought the second was heralding a weather report.

What a downer. I prefer your usual sunny disposition.

Has anyone bought that sheet music? I might try at it.
