Is there any compact portable browser?
« on: February 25, 2019, 07:59 AM »
Hi!

Is there a compact portable browser?

I use Palemoon and its 160MB are too many for my space allowance.

Thanks!

All browsers blow up in size, especially when you plan to use extensions.

Portable browsers often store (part of) their cache in a folder inside their main folder. So i would purge the cache first and see how much storage space is being cleared up.

If storage space is an essential requirement, disable cache entirely. But that will affect your browsing the internet. in lots of ways.

Buying a bigger HD or other storage device should not break the bank. In case of a hard disk in a laptop or desktop, you can pretty simple clone the old hard disk onto the new one.
Diverting cache folders onto a portable HD could be an option (if that portable HD remains connected).

And if another storage device isn't an option either, delete stuff from it that you don't need. Or move stuff that you haven't opened in 6 months or more onto a (marked) dedicated pendrive or portable HD.

Appears it is still being updated but I dont know anything about this -- App103 used recommend this, maybe she or someone else could chime in about it if they have any further info, thanks.

Don't think it's suitable, my K-Meleon portable is 208MB with the cache cleared.

However, my Basilisk portable is only 112MB.

^ I was presuming low use of resources meant small size. Not logical...

I was presuming "space allowance" meant assigned disk quota or he can't find a portable drive with more space  ;D

Insufficient/vague information.

How about a HTML 5 browser with a sporting size of 1,6 MB?

Sure, limited use (no tabs currently) but find a smaller one...

While not quite as minimalist as Forkle, SlimBrowser is less than 10x the size and a lot more functional, (same people who program SlimJet but based on IE's engine).

If the reason why he wants to use a portable browser is for privacy & security, a portable IE based browser wouldn't be a good option, as they usually leave lots of tracks and stuff behind in the IE cache of the OS.

Otherwise I would have suggested dIE, which is something really small (166KB) and lightweight, that I wrote some years ago. (and while it's as up to date as the version of IE that's installed on the system, it probably doesn't belong surfing the internet, any way)

Go here for the Lynx browser page. I recommend just pulling Frederic Meunier's build from here. Lynx only takes about 4mb of disk space.  ;)

The only facts we have are he wants portable and 160MB is too big - given up trying to get more info from him.

It could be he wants portable because he's restricted from installing software ... who knows ...

if I can derail this thread slightly, I'm also looking for a 'modern' lightweight browser for my netbook

Not worried about disc requirements, more about memory usage etc.

The current assumption that everyone has unlimited memory and mega core CPU doesn't apply here - limited to 2Gb ram and an atom processor

FWIW I'm currently using opera as it seems to be the lightest so far.  Chrome is 'useable' but firefox isn't.

I've tried a few others but they all seem to be based on one of the current favourites so there don't appear to be any real gains

suggestions?

You didn't mention an OS so I'll assume Windows.

FWIW, on my old 1.5GB Atom powered netbook I used to use either K-Meleon or the XP version of PaleMoon (archive link) which had optimisations for Atom CPUs.

There's a couple of PaleMoon derivatives based on current code but patched for XP: MyPal and Serpent/UXP, (see page 118 for current builds).

Would be tempted to install a lightweight Linux and try Firefox, etc (currently have Bodhi Linux installed on my Atom netbook).

MAYBE this unusual info is important:

I assume Lynx is installed in D:\Program Files\Lynx. If you use another PATH, edit lynx.cfg and change
-Lynx README

@Curt: Didn't install it at all: extract to Ram drive, open CLI, execute it, browse web.

Thanks 4WD

I'll give those a go.  I've toyed with kmeleon before, but never seriously

and yes, its still running the original win7 starter edition it came with.  It's getting a bit long in the tooth now and could probably benefit from a rebuild, but converting to linux has long been on the cards (although its a nuisance if I want to use it for some windows related work)
