I had one of these generic lean-back + swivel office chairs which needed replacement a couple of years back (the air elevation-lock or whatever gave out). I started using a straight back wooden chair in the meantime (no curves, just right angles) & realised I tended to slouch/fidgit/distort my posture way less and was totally OK sitting on a hard surface. Now I am distinctly uncomfortable if I have to sit in one of the soft-bottomed move-in-any-direction things.

Damn Straight (and well worth it) If you're planning to be sitting in it for 16hrs at a time. I'm not sure what the wife paid for the one I got for Christmas but I think it was in the $300 range, and that was after a good-buddy discount during a half-off last year's inventory sale.

Little details like the back reclining independently of the seat are heavenly when you've been sitting for 10hrs straight. (I'm 43 btw...) I keep the seat tipped a bit forward (tend to lean into the screen a bit) and I can sit cross-legged (level and comfortably) and am still able to lean back with out having my knees leverage the keyboard outa the desk.

I'll try to find out who it's made by and post a pic ... but yes do spring for a top shelf chair ... you'll thank yourself later.

I tried it for an hour or so once & loved it - you're forced, you could say, to sit with a straight back and the movement keeps your back "fit" and I found it very comfortable to boot

im using a crappy wood chair with boards stuffed with a thin strip of foam covered in cloth being passed off as cushions, and to make things worse, the chair is to low, and the desk is to high, so I want something that is more comfortable, and higher off the ground.

I am now on this fuzzy green chair I got from Staples, similar to the one in this image - I like it a lot. You have to put it together yourself (a one hour job), but it has lumbar support, and tilts back a good 45 degrees (great for resting your feet on nearby items, like your bed

). It keeps me warm and its comfy, and the armrests are made out of wood (can't remember the type right now, but it is a nice looking dark wood) so if I had to recommend one I would say this one is definitely a keeper. 15 year warranty, too!

since i blew two psu few weeks back. im on my dedicated linux box now, and it's in the living room lol. no good chairs in here

My two crappy metal chairs with fabric covered cardboard (or some kind of manufactured wood) both broke last month within weeks of each other. So I just bought a decent office chair for about $150, but strangely enough I can't find any information or pictures of it online.

It's an executive style chair made out of what is probably fake leather. It has massage motors in the lower and upper back. Seems pretty comfortable to me. It's a lot better than my previous chairs.

Jeff Atwood writes about office chairs again and features a bunch of suggestions he got after his first post about this topic.

Of the features without images I recommend the swopper, although I sat on a version with wheels and arm rests. You can bounce up and down, or swing back and forth or any other direction; in fact you can assume endless variations of positions, never actually sitting still -- it's the best you can do for your back!

I bought the aeron recently and it's amazing how resilient it is. It can really handle any amount of abuse I throw at it. It really is worth the investment. I never have any back pains.

Sorry, both chairs have already been thrown out as well as the yoga ball. My current chairs seat is not attached though and the padding is coming loose.

Yes, they do exist. You just have to get an extra wide chair, like the ones made for guys that weigh 300+ lbs.

Another benefit to getting a chair like that is that they are better quality, made much sturdier, so they don't break under the weight of a heavier person. You usually will not find cheap plastic legs on one. But the tradeoff is that they do come with a higher price tag.

Not shopped. According to NPR, it was custom made by a company called ErgoGenesis for a client who exceeded the 600-pound limit of its other chairs, and it cost $1,800.

The Alera Elusion has been recommended on a few sites I've seen as an affordable high quality alternative to the big boys, so I bought one on craigslist without much testing, and I can't say I really like it. I don't know it just doesn't feel very comfortable no matter how I adjust it.
