This isn't an official poll, I'm just wondering what people think there should be more of on here :)

Web apps, browser plug-ins? That's where everything is these days, whether we like it or not.

What should there be more of on DonationCoder?  You may only select up to 10 options.

Followed by... exactly 10 options. What's the point of writing that anyway? A better one would be 'You must select at least one item.' or something along those lines. :)

Either way, I have voted.

I didn't vote.  I like the site as it is.  Sure, it would be nice to have, say, more software reviews, but they're quite time-consuming, and since I'm not willing to write one, I don't think I should ask that others do more than they're already doing.  I had similar feelings about most of the other options as well.  The site already offers a lot that meets many different people's needs.  I'm happy with it as it is.

I'd like more of those Reiews!

Failing that, I'd like more of the same  ;)

I'm surprised not more people want discounts. What's wrong with discounts?

More and more i'm thinking the best first thing we could do for DC health overall might be to move to a real CMS system for the site (leaving the forum unchanged as SMF).

With the rest of the site set up as a CMS, we could easily have a proper download area where authors could update their own entries, providing a logical software organization area, and just in general make it much easier for different people to maintain and update.

I think in terms of moving forward and letting more people participate in creating content -- it's the natural first step since our current handcoded html page setup makes it particularly hard for others to manage the site content.

I'd like to point out that a great many people on DC Forum have repeatedly requested that what we need more of are a lot more adult-rated hot pix and animated GIFs of Angelina Jolie. Research indicates that said pix could increase traffic (visitors) on the site by 122.27%, never mind the other benefits and spinoffs.
I don't know why these people's requests have been steadfastly ignored.     :tellme:

Live magic shows!

On a more serious note, +1 on the CMS. (And good luck picking which one.  ;D )

Also possibly moving the DC hosted software over to their own individual blogs? That would give the authors a place to discuss what they're doing? I know sone have their own pages, but it would be better if there were better pointers to them in the forum  unless you look up the author's profile you'll likely never find it. The rolling dialog format in the main forum also makes it difficult to follow a given product without reading through ten pages of comments to avoid asking a question that's already been answered. Having a blog with comments enabled for individual posts would make it easier to follow and more focused.
 :)

+1 CMS too. Having said that I am personally so tired of managing them, updates breaking stuff, etc.

Would TinyPortal work?  Or are we looking at integrating SMF with some other portal software?

Personally, I find the comprehensive software reviews the most useful thing here on DonationCoder. Alas, most software reviews naturally become obsolete after just a few years, which happened to some reviews on DonationCoder as well. Certainly it would take serious effort to update them, so I don't see that happening any time soon.

+1 for a CMS.

A good one will let you naturally organize things and maintain updates and enter new content very easily.

I would love to see a post about the decision making process and what factors led you to decide on one over another. Call it a "software review". :)

If you're planning CMS around the site then why break things with SMF ? Instead go for IPB. i know it's paid(don't jump on me with free and open source stuff please) but it has CMS with forum. So by using IPB we can quickly get things running. Just have to turn some stuff off of IPB (like sidebar status etc).

mahesh2k I think he wants to keep SMF in its current state because of how highly configured DC's installation is.  Imagine how hard it would be to transfer the obscene amount of data available on this forum, over to another peice of software...and THEN transfering the user database, and THEN having to mess with google to try get re-indexed (AGAIN) lol.

Im in agreement with keeping SMF in its current state as the back end of DonationCoder and a nice looking, well organised CMS for the front  :D

I don't want to bite off too much at once, and there is so much custom smf work on our forum (donationcredits, etc.) so i think we'll keep the smf forum.
But on the other hand, maybe it would not be the best idea to tie ourselves even further to smf by using an smf-specific cms (like tiny portal).
So I think maybe using a generic cms (drupal, for example) might be the way to go.
But let's not have the "which cms to use" discussion on this thread, we can save that for another.

Like I said... Make that all an article after the fact.

mouser, YOU are the one that needs to deal with it. (And some others too.) But make the decision that makes YOUR life easier.

And if you don't choose DNN, well, that's your fault~! :P (Just kidding!)

I went back to have a look at FARR after reading some threads, and realized that the reason I haven't used it is because the information to get me hooked on it isn't quick & easy, and in my natural laziness, I've just moved on. So I'd like to add a +1 for organization.

Which sort of OT gets me thinking that I'd be best off changing my approach to screenshots -- It occurred to me that they need to be task based, and not interface based or feature based. Nobody cares about features -- they care about getting things done / benefits.

I will defer my write in vote for a mobile device style sheet until that "which cms to use" thread has concluded then. :)

A decent CMS should have good skinning/theme capabilities, so mentioning it now is a good thing. :)

Forums are hard to do on mobile though. The first thing I'd do is go look at what they're doing over at vBulletin. Those guys have the best forum software out there, and I'm sure they have some good stuff going on in the mobile sector as well.

Technically, that process is called "R&D" -- Rob & Duplicate~! :)
