Please kill me now - just bought an iPad off of eBay
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:22 AM »
As a someone that considers anything Apple related as anathema, I have now digitally soiled myself by buying an iPad (version 1).

My excuse: I need it for website testing as I've found that trying to emulate how Safari works on these devices (and iPhone) isn't the same as really using Safari on them. (There must be some weird Safari and OS bugs going on.)

I've also told myself that, maybe, just maybe, my parents will stop being frightened by the internet and use the tablet rather than a netbook. Yeah, fat chance - but if they do then I'll consider it worth allowing the wretched Apple machine into the house.

Now, please excuse me whilst I go and flagellate myself for being such a hypocrite.

it's a beautiful looking gadget, you'll enjoy it -- don't be so hard on yourself.

I sympathize. I also am having apple-buyers guilt. I think it helps if you don't think of the ipad as a computer, rather just a new toy that you can play with. Gain comfort with the idea that productive computing still remains mostly in a non-apple world. Don't get me wrong, the ipad is useful, but I would never use it a productivity tool. I don't consider checking email a productive activity either so don't pull that on me later.
It seems like that is Apple's philosophy as well, being that you still have to tether the ipad to an actual computer and the lack of any kind of file access ability.
I bought the ipad as a fun new toy. That is an excuse enough for me.

That sounds like a perfect description; I shall persuade my parents it is nothing more than a toy and "fun" to use. I'm just concerned that as soon as they have to type something on it the fun will quickly disappear.

C'mon! Give him a break!

He's going to spend the rest of eternity in torment for that. Let's let him enjoy his remaining time~! :D :P

How much did you pay for it, if you don't mind me asking...

Personally I am not in the least surprised with you penchant for buying all sorts of crap off eBay - let's hope this toy at least works ;)

Oh ye of little faith. It will be in "immaculate condition" just as described. I know it will. And the $2000 I wired as security to ensure a speedy delivery will definitely be returned to me like the seller agreed. I wasn't sure about sending him my PayPal account login and password but it seemed perfectly reasonable when he explained it would increase my "trust" rating on eBay. It's nice to know there are some good, honest, people out there.

Serious mode: it cost £288 (including 10 quid packaging) and the item is about four months old and in "immaculate condition".

I was watching other iPads being sold on eBay over the past few days and it seemed they were going for £380 so I don't think I've done too bad.

(I've seen that Argos, and maybe other UK outlets, are selling iPads (v1) for around £320 or £330 - but the whole country appears to be out of stock with no chance of that changing soon.)

Can you buy from the Apple store?  Refurbs are USD 349 on there, which is the reason that I've really been astonished how much people are getting on eBay...

I had no idea that they had a refurbs section, though, I've just checked it and it's completely empty, i.e. no UK refurbished Apple products at all.

It seems that iPads are the price they are on eBay as they are probably the quickest way of obtaining one at the moment.

And of course once you have an idea it has to be done yesterday  ;)

Why not wait 6 months? There will be at least three more generations to choose from by then and iPad version 1  will be down to 50p as the white box brigade scrabble and queue for version 5. Version 5 will come in an even whiter box that is so minimal you have to send it back to Apple to open it for you (only $99 for service plus packaging and VAT). It will have a prettier picture of an Apple on the back with an audible subliminal message to send all your money to Jobo. One of the newest features will be that it doesn't work at all unless you hold it 143 cm from the ground and titled to 27.3 degrees to the horizontal - unless you fit an expensive gel jacket to it - but then you can't touch the screen, a new security feature).

I guess the stores are different. (and this is just a few... no 16GB WiFi left right now...)

Don't fight it buddy!  It's a beautiful device.  We don't have to be so black and white with this stuff.  if the ipad fits your needs, get it.  if a desktop klunker fits your needs, get it.  We don't have to act so crazy about it!  I've been very happy with the ipad.

My thoughts exactly.  With the iPad 2 coming out, I've been able to get some pretty good deals on accessories too.  My latest toy... the ClamCase.  That along with my BookBook I already had  and my Compass stand has me covered for all situations.

Sorry guys, I understand the need to program for as many platforms as possible to maximize your skills and make a living. But I can't share the Apple love. I don't like the company, what it represents through strict control, lawsuits, and proprietary everything; how it does business, how it treats its employees as suspects, or how their gadgets are made.

Still, we love you Nudone. Just don't be surprised if 30 of us show up in your kitchen for an intervention!  ;D
