my experience has been that it's very hard to beat lou reed for programming music.
however more important than the exact music seems to be playing the same album over and over again - helps get you in a good rhythm.

i've also had good experience with dexy's midnight runners, blondie, and danielle howle.

Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" has always been a great album for opening floodgates of creativity and productivity.  I also enjoy a playlist of a few hundred Alphaville tracks.  Finally, I've never gone wrong with Blue Mars streams.

Depends on my mood... NIN, Rammstein, Vader, Koxbox, Infected Mushroom, Dimmu Borgir, Septic Flesh. Sometimes some 'softer' stuff like ERA, PJ Harvey, Portishead, Morcheeba etc. Depends on what kind of coding I do, too - some music is better for debugging, other for coding. Meshuggah has been very good when I have a deadline to make and need some creativity

I only listen to electronic music, working or not. Electronic music covers a wide range; popular genres of electronic music are "techno" and "drum & bass". There is much more, and I listen to much more genres. Some tunes cannot be categorized, but those are rare.

I prefer high tempo music for coding, it helps me stay focused and also makes me work&think faster ;-) But most of the time I just load my playlist in my music player of choice and let it play at random. If a song really disturbs me, I skip it.

For me electronic music is the natural choice of a programmer, but then I also have a high autism quotient...

   -freeware "algorithmic electronica composer", I always knew it, now that's the proove, techno doesn't require any skills :-)
   -it does not just help for hardware setup problems during live act situations, people never will stand around stupid without dancing while you are solving your audio-problems, if the crowd is drunk enough they won't notice :-]
   -the second main task of Saiko is, even if you are to drunk to locate sliders, you can ask any person to do the job for you meanwhile, even girls! (just a quotation, hehe)
   -doesnt generate pure random stuff, most generated rifflines follow some psychedelic/goa directives
   -combines realtime synthesis + sampling, you can also load wav loop layers (2 loopers + 1 slicer) to add some special events

I tend to have the idea of the right music not having any distracting lyrics, must be calming in nature, and unless I am sure I damn well know what I am doing, it can't have a bouncy techno beat.

I have a strong attraction to classical guitar, violin, and flute music. They have a certain emotional effect on me that seems to lessen the feelings of frustration that I am prone to (frustration makes me cry).

The exceptions:

• Albinoni Adagios
• Hearts of Space

These are reserved for sleeping music and pain management.

- Ataraxia ( http://www.ataraxia.net/ ) ( they use classical guitar allot, though the vocals may be a bit weird to some that aren't used to strange non-mainstream music )
- Excalibur soundtrack ( this has some excellent flute/classical guitar stuff in it)
- Loituma ( finnish folk stuff )
- Zbigniew Preisner ( this guy makes very mystical classicalish music, wrote several movie soundtracks too)
