I think there's a coding snack approaching ....
From a list of potential travellers, find a point on earth which
a. minimizes travelling and accomodation costs
b. maximizes pleasure (eg no one wants to go to new zealand, so that's a neg, etc etc)
c. affects any other parameters that can be dreamt up.
Just maybe, mouser's world cup program could be tweaked?

...and I'm guessing you haven't played with it before...
or since! I installed the demo and that was that... locked out.

Thought I'd download and try photoimpact on the strength of that. Unfortunately, when I tried to run the demo version I got a really curious message:
"limit users can not try this product. You can use normally after successful activation"

Odd! Although the same problem (although with a different ULEAD product) was reported here. I don't know if that helps or is the same situation as yourself?

yair, I saw that plus a couple of other references, but none had an answer unfortunately.

that would be fine, except I have admin privs.
I'll try actually being admin next/later.

356
I use PhotoImpact which is a PS-like product, but at a much cheaper price. It's one of the best value of these types of apps IMO, though certainly not the best either.

A bit freaky too, because my last post was in connection with limits of a function. (maths is an attitude"

I'm a bit worried about the limit(x-8)^-1 as x->8 being equal to infinity. I'd think the limit doesn't exist.

I believe that while (x-8)^1 for x = 8 doesn't exist, the limit as x tends towards 8 does, and that limit is infinity.
I was led to believe that a limit only existed pv the left limit equalled the right limit, which isn't the case here. This case is completely unlike eg lim x->2 (x-4)/(x^2-4x) where there's a discontinuity at x=2 but the lim equals 1/2

358
simple one:thanks VERY much mouser for all your time and worry and effort you're putting into this.
On the bright side I managed to do a bit extra work at school today because of the down time. I think at least one of my classes benefitted.

It might not be too hard to roll your own for free.
Have a look at:

There's some nice tool tip scripts out there too

Think I like the student answer better than the teacher example

Of course we can't be all nice all the time, so here is a different page that makes fun of all the mathematically "challenged" out there. Please don't be too offended though.

I mean while their solutions would seem painfully wrong, they did follow certain rules to arrive at the solution. The rules applied weren't the ones taught so the result was wrong, but I think some of these folks should get credit for consistency or at least creativity:
six = 6

I'm in 2 minds about winrar's free offer.
a. Very nice of them and good luck to you if you got through.
or
b. Very annoying to have wasted so much time trying to get to their page, only to find that it wasn't possible (for me) to get to the next step of having my details accepted. If they are genuinely happy to give away v3.51, why not have the offer open over a week or so? Just a bloody pr stunt that wasted my time.
.... if my students cause me hassles today I'll opt for (b), if they're cooperative etc I'll choose (a)

362
why not use Skrommel's DragKing (https://www.donation.../index.html#DragKing) so that just before you're about to click on the download button/link, you highlight the app's name. Then ctrl-v plus an extension in the save as dialog box.

When I see other people mention things like this, I feel the same way .... it makes me want to support them with a purchase.
It would be good if there was a repository for stories of companies making gestures like this, so if you wanted to purchase some software, you could check out that list - sort of like "preferred suppliers". (Similar to trying to purchase from companies who donate software to dc)

I emailed pzizz about:
a. Not being able to get a discount
b. The australian affiliate selling pzizz at a higher than USA price.

Here's the reply I received:
Hi Tony

Thanks for your message to Matthew...  I'm sorry for any confusion
but pzizz Australia is a separate entity...

Anyway, I apologise for the frustration this must have caused you -
we're here to make people's lives easier - not more complicated!

Please accept this license key by way of an apology:
**********

Any problems, please let me know...

Otherwise, best wishes and happy pzizzing!

If that isn't a nice gesture, I don't know what is!!! I think the "niceness quotient" is terrific and far outweighs the monetry aspect.
Good one Pzizz (http://www.pzizz.com)

No idea, but the email they sent to Download the demo came with no links whatsoever...

Pretty suspicious...

So if I cannot try it, and they cannot send a simple email with a link, I will not buy.
You got further than me .... I could only get to a purchase link (at $50US, which was a bit surreal since I was clicking on a discount offer for a product with an ORIGINAL price of $40US). Think I'll give up too.

How about "off by one" browser for a lightweight free browser?
Have a look at http://offbyone.com/offbyone/

"Featured software" on http://bitsdujour.com/ today is Pzizz, sleeping, relaxation and concentration software.
a. Has anyone any knowledge of this or similar?
b. Does the discount only work for USA or is the discount code wrong for everyone?

Living Room / A USA company doing it right ...
« on: June 07, 2006, 05:52 PM »
A few times I've seen posts bemoaning the fact that offers were valid for USA residents only.
Here's a company that knows how to do it right. An excerpt from their last newsletter:

Yes, you heard it right. Despair, Inc. is extending to our domestic
customers a special father's day coupon code, granting the American
user TOTALLY FREE SHIPPING on all orders over $15*. All you
have to do to get it is to be willing to type in the following
coupon code: "yesasamatteroffactireallyamthischeap" (NO QUOTES).

(OR, if you're just as lazy as you are stingy, "imcheap" works, too, but
man, I just have to let you know that if you type this in, you are so not
the kind of customer that marketing people want to target. Just so we
understand each other.)

Yes, those of you outside the United States are excluded from this
promotion. But because we feel sorry for you, we are offering an
alternate coupon code, which will grant the user 15% off their order.
All you have to do is type, "iwishilivedinamerica"(NO QUOTES).

The company is despair.com, and they're right into the art of DEmotivation. Worth a look.

We (my girlfriend and I) just bought 2 Palm Zire 31 I am searching for freeware for it now.
Why not post what sort of software you're looking for? (eg, doc reader, screenshot capture, shopping list, etc etc)

Were you looking for a "widgets" dBase-type database, or something like Bonsai or ListPro?

I bought handbase from http://www.ddhsoftwa...m_software.html?UID=
I used to monitor several sites for palm news and software ..eg -

http://palmaddict.typepad.com/palmaddicts/
http://www.clieuk.co.uk/index.shtml
http://www.1src.com/
http://www.spug.net/

For specific shareware/freeware repositories, you could look at:

http://freewarepalm.com/
http://zdnet.com.com/2001-2008-0.html
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Systems/Handhelds/Palm_OS/Software/
http://www.eurocool.com/type/?type=Freeware

Of course you have to wade through a lot of junk to find stuff that suits

Living Room / Re: nice long review of music recommendation sites
« on: June 02, 2006, 12:53 AM »
I went to Last.fm  and searched for a few jazz pianists (eg bobby timmons) Got really excited because of the number of people who had reportedly listened to him recently (from Last.fm one would assume) and thought "wow, this is a great site to have him being streamed"

I downloaded and installed their listening software on that basis, then was stumped for awhile when it reported "not enough content" and nothing was streamed. "Not enough content is to be read as NO bobby timmons.  On investigation, the numbers who listened to him did so on their own computer, independent of Last.fm and it was this statistic that was being reported (ie last.fm tracks winamp usage)
Pandora is still #1 for me
