Thanks Sphere and RJ ...
tried Zotero,but found even just adding some pdfs wasn't straightforward. I was expecting an "add (import) pdfs to database, then work with them" process.

Qiqqa sounds worth a try - will install and check out the tags and annotations.
The mentions of auto tags puts me off somewhat - I dislike s/ware that knows best what I want. I am assuming though, that I'll be able to turn this off as I don't want to drown in a sea of tags.

Thanks RJ. I'll investigate but probably wouldn't spend the money.
 I found out that PDF Xchange does indeed allow for global searching of its bookmarks and comments (sticky notes)... and saving the search
While I'd like to have a notes type program allowing linking to those, without importing the pdfs themselves, I'm happy enough to go with what I can do.

Thanks for taking the time to reply RJ ... it's a possibility worth me pursuing, and agree with tractable.
I'm still hopeful of a pdf only solution though.
I know I can insert text into a pdf referring to article I'm interested in keeping view of,
and atm, that seems the easiest option.
 I was hoping just using my favoured pdf editor would allow for either the bookmarks, comments or sticky notes it can do, to be searchable globally (eg by DocFetcherPro or AnyTXT searcher), but it seems I'm out of luck there.

I download and keep a newspaper, pdf format, text searchable, each day.
I have 2 pieces of software  for doing a key word or phrase search on the year's collection of pdfs.
 My problem though, is that this is not sufficient for keeping track of just some articles on a particular topic....eg I can locate all articles on renewable energy, but only really am interested in 5% of them.
So I want to end up with a list of links, preferably with comments, which allows me to link to relevant pdf articles.
I don't want to do heaps of copy/pasting into a notes database

Three approaches spring to mind:
1. A sticky notes program which would allow for attaching a note to a specific page in a given pdf, and being able to use the sticky notes s/ware to be able to search its database of notes
2. Bookmarking articles or pages in the pdf and then somehow extracting all bookmarks from all pages and using some other (unknown to me) s/ware to manage those. ChatGPT suggested a python routine/script to me to extract bookmarks but it's over my head
3. Some info management s/ware which allows for linking to specific locations in local pdfs. I saw that excel allows this if you use acrobat and within that, copy the page number. I use PDF-xchange and can't seem to do that.

Probably there's a better way, as I'm sure this is not a unique want. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks very much 4WD. I'm in Adelaide tho.
The drive in question never had any deletions, only read/writes. So the storage ought be in close to pristine condition.
It's a 2.5 portable wd, acting like it's dead (maybe as you suggest, dead usb interface board).
Given I can't get any computer to even recognize it as a valid device, I can't try any data recovery s/ware.
 From what you say, only option seems very expensive specialist data recovery service (pricing at their upper end) or being brutal and giving the
bloody thing a good thump (unbelievably optimistic)
 Now, all important data IS on 3.5 drives, each backed up

Thanks 4wd. Sad to say, I meant "moved".
And the hd reports as "unrecognized usb device" on 2 windows laptops. Disk manager, Easus partition manager, explorer2...nothing can see the hd. I'm sure i can hear the drive spinning, but no chatter from the heads, no other sound at all.
Disappointing, as it was very new, hadn't been dropped or otherwise mistreated. Because of foolish belief that new=should be ok is why I moved, not copied

Thanks Dormouse...the "viewing" referred to viewing as in being able to read said notes. Sorry for my ambiguity.
As an aside, re video, a month ago, I purchased a new 5 TB hd and transferred a lot of scattered across many HDs "toddler" videos to it. Plan was to then get a second HD for back up.
2 weeks after the collation/consolidation the new HD died. BEFORE I backed it up My stupidity.
 2 reasons for not using a professional data recovery service: price, and fear of the photos and videos being onsold to paedophiles (Toddler is the cutest little girl)
Anyway, video backup is uppermost in my mind

Maybe Simplenote?  It's a "free" cloud service by  Automattic (the people behind WordPress?) that you can access by browser or by their own (Electron behemoth) Windows app, or their Android app, but it can also be synchronized with CintaNotes (free and payware, I think even the free version will sync with Simplenote now) and ResophNotes (free, mentioned by wraith808 of this parish) on Windows, and with Glance Note on Android.  Certainly CintaNotes and Glance Note, and I think ResophNotes, keep their own local databases.

It's possible to use Simplenote collaboratively.

Big caveat; as a cloud service, you are at the mercy of their policies.  The ResophNotes site has a note that Simplenote might remove the API for third parties, though that hasn't happened yet, as far as I know.  Also, at present anyway, you can export from Simplenote to plain text files.

Thanks RJBull... I looked at all of those, and in the end, went with the multiple o/s app "Diarium". Reason was sync was thru Dropbox (she has access to relevant folder), multiformat export capability and a backup function. Uncertainty about Simplenote API removal factored in my thinking too.

Hi,
situation:
2 people, one old, other young mother. Old won't be around many more years, fine with computer, has a paid web hosted account.
Mother fine on android phone, not really interested in computers.
Aim:
 to easily create a (roughly daily) record of new vocab, behaviours etc of 2 year old child for long term viewing within the family only, using android/windows s/w (NO apple)
Caveats:
1. MUST be able to easily retrieve the data (to text files preferably) at a later date when old person (me) gone
2. Both people must be able to independently "post" the info - probably like daily thoughts. Her thru android phone, me thru either android phone or computer
3. In the past I've set up wordpress blogs, with ability to email posts to blog. But I'm ruling out wordpress as the mother won't be able to extract the posts from the wp database
(I know it's possible, but it won't get done if I'm not around)
4. prefer to use my hosted service for safety. I do have a (new) synology NAS but I don't know enough about it yet to know whether it might provide part of a solution
5. I don't trust commercial online services, so not looking in that direction. I want more control/ownership of the files

yes. Except in every photo I take, since I don't want to be in it, I have the camera directly over my head, so looking down, all you see is grey hair unless I edit it out.

What I'm actually interested in tho is whether 3D photos look good or not using the Quest 2.
Obviously, they'd look better than on the Go model, but I'm wondering about other's subjective opinions.
 I'm getting the impression photo viewing has ceased to be much of an attraction for users in general.

I have an Oculus Go (ie very old Oculus) which I use(d) for viewing 3D photos I took throughout SE Asia.
It's great apart from the poor resolution, so I'm thinking of upgrading to the Quest 2.
Bit of a promotion for them atm.
 Can anyone with any experience in this use case (not so interested in gaming) comment on the quality of the 3D photo viewing experience please?

Contro,
try downloading a track from wikiloc using gpx format. Then when asked about opening file, you would choose osmand to open it. I just tried it - worked easily.
Alternatively, google search:how to open gpx in osmand. You should see:
Download the GPX fils on your "Download" folder of your handset. You can also copy paste them on Android --> data --> net. osmand --> files --> tracks --> import folder. Go to Menu --> Configure Map --> GPX Track (Turn it on) and it will show all the GPX tracks that are in the Tracks folder on your handset.

Osmand is good for roaming around using offline maps and it allows import of gpx and klm tracks
Worked well for me lots of times wandering around unfamiliar cities in Vietnam

Not so sure about using the URL - I've no idea atm whether notes I'm creating are being synced or not. Perhaps from messing about yesterday I've already used it. 
Will worry about that after seeing how this all note creating/composing works.

What I'm doing right now is a combination of things.  I took the extensions from foam but used the format of obsidian- I write in obsidian or in vs code.  Really liking it so far.

1. Go to https://github.com/f...bubble/foam-template
2. Click use thiis template
3. Fill out the name of the repo that you want to use for Foam, and make it private or public as you wish
4. Open VS code.
5. Go to the source control tab and click clone
6. Clone it to your local drive wherever you want your Zettel stored
7. Authenticate to GitHub
8. After it is cloned, it will ask you to install recommended extensions.  Do that (it will change your theme- booo... but you can change it back)
9. There is no 9.  You're there.

8. I cloned, downloaded as mentioned above, didn't get asked for anything. Opened VS code, opened folder which the clone got unzipped to, still not asked for anything.
   Did have the option of installing 2 extensions(?) tho

1. Over in column G, set up the column to contain Columns B + G. eg in g2: =b2+d2, then copy down
2. Copy column G to column E, but instead of the normal paste, use "paste special" and paste VALUES rather than formulae
3. Setup column F to contain column E - column B eg in f2: =E2-B2
4. Column F heading becomes "Sold" and Column D can be deleted

Using "Everything" to search for tif and gif files - it found none in the folder I'm searching. So I don't know where MMB gets the 40 tif and 1 gif found from. At least it's thumb displays are accurate

Basically, it said this:

jpg found 124 shows 124 thumbs
gif found 1 shows 0
tif found  40 shows 0
png found 39 shows 39

ie in total, found 204, shows 163. Unfiltered, it displays 163 which matches the displayed filtered total.
I'm about to have a hunt for the missing 40 tif images

I think it's confusing that the unfiltered screen says, for me, "found 7652 files in 1283 folders", but I think that means SEARCHED 7652 files, with no mention of the number of images found. (correct me if I'm wrong)
If I'm right, better to say "found 163 images from 7652 files searched in 1283 folders.
This would then match the filtered views which say "found xxx" meaning found xxx images

Installed latest version.

MMB found 7652 files (recursively) in about 23800 folders .
I assume 7652 is the total number of files - all types, not just images - found. Xplorer^2 reports 7,904 Files, 1,834 Folders.
23800 folders I don't understand.

And when I count the (no filtering) thumbs actually being displayed, I counted 163. Maybe they're displayed in pages and I'm only seeing page 1?
Using filtering, count from MMB is:
png 39 ... 39 get displayed
jpg/jpeg 124 ... 90 get displayed
bmp 0
gif 1 ... 0 get displayed
tif/tiff 40 ... 0 get displayed
for a total of 203 images, with 129 getting displayed.
