N.A.N.Y. 2022 / Re: NANY 2022 Release: sSpeedtest
« on: January 06, 2022, 07:37 AM »
version 1.0.2 build 1

Are you running from a UAC protected folder?  If so, does running as Admin help?
So, I had the same problem on two win 10 machines
Both running from C:\Portable\sSpeedtest

It seems that where you have to approve on first run (by typing "yes") -- there's actually two questions there. I dont know do you have to answer yes to both -- but on the first attempt (laptop) I missed the second question and closed the window. sSpeedtest is not working there, even when run as admin. Even if I delete the install and start again, I dont get that command window any more -- the info must be saved somewhere?

Now, on the other machine (desktop) I noticed the second question and answered (yes) -- this one works when run as admin.
Thanks for the programme

I'm just getting zeros across the board -- using the option "to quickly add a group of Speedtest.net servers closest to you". The servers look good - ten showed and were automatically selected.

Which version are you using?

version 1.0.2 build 1

hi skwire,
I'm just getting zeros across the board -- using the option "to quickly add a group of Speedtest.net servers closest to you". The servers look good - ten showed and were automatically selected.
It's on a relatively new install of Windows 10, which I havent messed around with much. Just with default windows security /anti-virus.

did I miss out on a step?

It's not recognising the .NET install:

I still get this message (even after a reboot):

To run this application, you must install .NET.
The framework 'Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App', version '5.0.0' was not found.
Would you like to download it now?

Living Room / Re: Anyone watching the 2021 chess championship matches?
« on: December 04, 2021, 04:00 PM »
Yes, well, followed the first few games which were draws. Also watched a video showing game 7. So I missed the big one -- I am not going to watch an eight hour video though ;-) But even the summaries of this game are over forty minutes long:

Interesting, obviously not the same word for everyone since the word I just got doesn't have repeated letters.
Same here (new word due here in twenty minutes or so).

Got today's word relatively quickly fwiw which consoled me after not getting the previous one at all.

This looks like it is intended to be printed professionally and cut to page size. Wonder does it open in a layout programme or illustrator -- you'd still have to do a lot of work to seperate the pages.

1) Can you not access a "normal" version of it?
Otherwise I'd take screenshots and crop to page.
2) Curious: what language is it?
3) Do you understand it
? (Never mind, it's in various languages)

General Software Discussion / Re: alternative to filehamster?
« on: October 06, 2021, 02:18 PM »
Do you have it running and installed on a windows 10 machine? What are you using now?
I'm no longer doing the work I used it for. No longer even work (professionally) at/with a computer. I do have one project though that I intend to finish next year, for which I could use it, or something like it, so might try install it at some stage again.

General Software Discussion / Re: alternative to filehamster?

Just for the record:
seems like File Hamster has been updated recently.  There is an overview of the new features here on youtube from 3 years ago.
https://www.youtube....
Those videos are all of features that already existed years ago. I wrote elsewhere on dc that some minor bugs were fixed in 2019. Unfortunately without a link. I think they mainly made sure it ran on Windows 10 so as they could keep selling it. I couldn't find the forum.

Filehamster could be an option. It appears to be in development (again). Also requires active input, but iiuc is a lot simpler than full versioning system.
Forget that:
after years of no updates, they fixed a couple of minor bugs end of last year, but no support in 2020, so I would avoid.

I'm wondering where are these available?
And are they getting the attention they deserve (they sound very helpful to youtubers)...

PS I not a youtuber, and have never used Premiere

General Software Discussion / Re: Montage Videos

^sorry about that -- but my point remains Contro.
If there are no recommendations from DC members, why not try Gizmo's recommendations? (Or other sources - how did you get on with ShotCut?)
You can then let us know how good they are, if they do what you want, are easy to use etc. thereby giving something back to the community.

^ were they recommended by someone?
Do you not trust gizmo's recommendations? I'm not saying they always right, but if you don't get any personal recommendations, it's a good place to start.

e.g. for one app they say:
"impressive features, simple and intuitive user interface". Sounds good to me...

Can anyone recommend a note taking app that will store notes locally and allow for export?

Diarium is one possibility, I can scroll through entries with the timeline view, and it allows export as txt, but I'm curious about alternatives.

(I've tried a search but my search fu not very good and the internet doesn't seem to understand the word 'offline'...)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« on: August 22, 2021, 03:16 AM »
Migrating from 7 to 10 was free. While it is not free anymore officially, Microsoft still doesn't charge you if you upgrade. There is a loophole for people with disabilities. And Microsoft doesn't check if that moniker applies to you or not.

Anyway, your registration data from Windows 7 is retrievable for the Windows 10 installer too. While I would not expect it to be the case, if you were using a Microsoft account in Windows 7, your registration data is stored at Microsoft. Reusing that account will activate Windows 10 as well. So, there are 3 ways around activation in your case. However, you should check if you now have Windows 10 Home instead of Windows 10 Pro. Although you (the user) would expect this to be the case, but if I understood correctly, that is only if you bought a retail version of Windows 7 Pro. If you bought an OEM system with Windows 7 Pro on it, it got demoted to Windows 10 Home after the upgrade to 10.
  • yeah, I was just surprised the upgrade was still working -- and in such a user friendly manner at that...
  • local account, so yeah, I presume the installer retrieved the data
  • they were generous and gave me Pro version. It's a Dell business laptop fwiw, but still OEM I presume. Note that here in Germany you are legally allowed sell OEM copies of Windows for general use (I've bought and installed a couple of OEM copies of earlier versions of Windows over the years). That could possibly be a factor here.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

I upgraded a six-year old laptop to Windows 10 today. Downloaded the ISO on the machine itself -- it automatically presumes it's for that machine unless you indicate otherwise. I then replaced the HDD with an SSD and installed.

What surprised me is that it is activated without any input from me (digital license) -- I can only presume it used the license from the previous Windows 7 install. (I was hoping I would be able to use the 7 key to upgrade, but wasnt expecting it to be this easy. It was Windows 7 pro fwiw.

Another plus is it fixed a couple of problems (a very long running problem where the graphics driver crashed, seemingly related to the touchpad; and a more recent problem of faded screen colours in some situations). So, I'm a happy camper :-)

google translate is having a bad hair day --
I wanted to translate a German Dell support page to English -- it got translated to a mish-mash of mostly Dutch with spatterings of English.
Especially entertaing though were the feedback questions at the bottom:
