N.A.N.Y. 2021 / Re: NANY 2021: MoveFileHere
« on: January 17, 2021, 06:16 PM »
I did get another chance -- I seem to get error messages no matter what I do:

1) With exe, pressing enter after F7 gets same error as above

2) with AHK file, pressing enter/spacebar/left-click after F7 gets:
---------------------------
MoveFileHere.ahk
---------------------------
Error:  0x8000FFFF - Catastrophic failure

Specifically: hwnd

   Line#
   216: Hotkey,Lbutton,hotkey_lbutton,vState
   217: Hotkey,Esc,hotkey_esc,vState
   218: }
   224: {
   225: vHwnd := WinActive("ahk_class CabinetWClass")
   226: if (vHwnd)
   227: For window, in ComObjCreate("Shell.Application").Windows
--->   228: if (window.hwnd = vHwnd)
   229: {
   230: path := window.Document.Folder.Self.Path
   232: Return,SubStr(path, 1, 2) = "::" ? "" : path
   233: }
   234: }
   244: {
   246: vHwnd := vHwnd ? vHwnd : WinExist("A")

Continue running the script?
---------------------------
Yes   No
---------------------------

3) I get the same error using a different folder -- note it does find the folder and displays the correct file

Do you think is it to do with it being a user account? (UAC at "Default", which appears to be high). I can try it in the admin account, but not tonight ;-)

TROLL BRIDGE is a love-letter to Terry Pratchett and Discworld:
very good, I enjoyed that :up:
the song at the end uses the tune of an old Irish anti-recruitment ballad "Arthur McBride" (youtube)

^ Nod5 thanks for that info :up:

The error you describe is a bug but I haven't found a way to reproduce it yet. It could be an issue with file permissions or Windows 10 security (partially) blocking the exe, hard to say.
it's a user account (there is no problem with elevating permissions though when necessary). Not sure what the security settings are. Will get back to it again in a couple of days time, and try a few variations and report back then.

^ thanks BGM

Be sure and read Incipitor's help file - it explains all this stuff.
yes... :-[

I dont know is this a Vivaldi problem or a Chrome problem (I have little experience with Chrome):

In Firefox, if I simply type 'u' in the addressbar it shows my most frequently visited page with a u in it at the top of a list: the donationcoder 'unread all' forum page. I just have to press enter.

[EDIT #2] different browser, I guess I just got to work differently -- if I just type 'd' it autocompletes to the page I want...

In Vivaldi dropdown I get:
#1) search engine icon with 'u' i.e. enter will do a search [EDIT// I got rid of this in search settings]
#2) 'Frequently visited pages' *not* including dc which has to be one of my most visited page, (does include some sites with no 'u' in the name  e.g. evernote.com)
#3) 'Typed history' not here
#4) 'Bookmarks' -- I've change the settings to favour bookmarks (and bookmarked the page), but see no difference. It's not shown here.

Here's my settings, any ideas what I could change here?

N.A.N.Y. 2021 / Re: N.A.N.Y 2021: Incipitor
« on: January 17, 2021, 05:51 AM »
Start Menu confusion:
because I initially have to run incipitor as admin, it automatically chose the start menu for the admin account, and not the one for the current user account. So I uninstalled that context menu entry, and did a search for the start menu location.

In the user account (Windows 10 x64) there seem to be two start menus:

C:\Users\*me*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
&
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I see you've chosen the user account above, but see here that there's a lot more shortcuts in the ProgramData folder...
Can anyone help my confusion ? :-)

« on: January 16, 2021, 05:14 PM »
Trying the exe file in Windows 10.

Two things:

1) (minor) it doesnt recognise that the Download folder has been moved from it's default location (the new location is recognised correctly by File Explorer and Vivaldi). I edited the ini file to point to correct folder, so no real problem here

2) When I press F7, the name of the file to be moved shows as a tool tip type message (near the mouse pointer) but nothing is moved. If I click on the message I get this error:

---------------------------
MoveFileHere.exe
---------------------------
Error:  0x8000FFFF - Catastrophic failure

Specifically: hwnd

   Line#
--->   161: if (window.hwnd = vHwnd)

Continue running the script?

N.A.N.Y. 2021 / Re: One-Time Grid
« on: January 16, 2021, 01:45 PM »
How I use it: Every time I need a new password I grab a sheet (I printed some out front and back of a page and each has 6 grids on it) and circle the group of character that I want to use as the password, like a word search puzzle, (making sure to follow that site's guidelines for passwords) and then indicate the start and end. It may sound like a pain, but it's not (at least I don't think so). I write the description/website at the top along with the username. I have also included a random string and a pin that can be use as a suffix/prefix to the password.
hi Chris,
trying to figure out if I understand this correctly:

is the main point of this:
1) having help to create a random password ?
2) having a hard copy that you can store (e.g. in your safe) ?

unimportant:
you say that you "indicate the start and end" -
3) do you draw a line from start square to finish square through each character in sequence (I of course initially chose the most complex line possible, but this doesnt make the password any better...)
4) do you keep that line relatively simple :-) ?

Can you tell me which version of SC you have where this behavior of the magnified window does not happen?
I found an older version[4.31.1], and it works just fine. I keep it handy, so that when the software auto-updates, I can tear that out and install the kept version, that is well behaved
I'm a bit confused by the OP though as SC does not auto-update...

Well, after a quick look: it looks great - - and you both sound great. Well done!

« on: December 26, 2020, 04:48 PM »
^ You make a lot of very good points.
Especially:

Yes, politics, religion, and perhaps a few other things are generally verboten topics on this forum. But that has always been a soft line, and small exceptions where the discussion veered somewhat across the line have existed in the past. In them, a few mostly respectful, if not slightly heated, posts about politics and/or religion were made. And then, because it was usually off topic for the thread the posts were made in, or because of at least one warning from a moderator (but usually mouser) with the power to enforce the warning, the conversation was steered back to the topic on hand.

Some maybe relevant points:
I havent noticed (or had forgotten) this evengalising in the past that you speak of.
I dont think anyone intended to bully, but unfortunately it was disrespectful how we all hopped on the 'I'm evil' bandwagon :( and maybe boils down to bullying
I think my posts were taken as the "warning" by the moderator. (As I say above, I guess I prompted it as well.) Meaning the moving of the posts was not really 'without warning'. But I guess that's a minor point...

« on: December 26, 2020, 02:25 PM »
Hi Deozaan,
I prompted the 'censoring' of this thread.
You must know that it was not censored because you said things like "I wish you joy and happiness" and "goodwill toward others". You also must know where that discussion goes, and that, if you want that discussion on dc, you gotta allow pretty much all other discussions related to religion. You must also know where that will eventually go.
I understand the dislike of this moving of posts / call it censoring if you want. I also remember the days where there were all sorts of people (I mean beliefs/ views) on dc and there wasn't much discussion about those beliefs or views. That was really nice, but it didnt last. It was a just couple of peple who screwed that up, but that's beside the point.
Sorry that the thread did end up like this ...

DOH! New tablet also: Alldocube iPlay 20 - For just over US$115 it's a terrific tablet, (previously had an Amazon FireHD8) - a review.

No Widevine L1 so limited to Netflix SD but tbh, it's a 10" screen, it still looks pretty good.

Other than that: Octocore Unisoc, Android 10, 1920x1200 10.1" IPS w/ Gorilla Glass, GPS/Beidou, 4GB RAM + 64GB Flash, up to 512GB uSD, USB-C, Dual SIM 4G LTE (inc. B28 & VoLTE) ... biggest phone I've ever owned ;D

[ Invalid Attachment ]
I got that one myself a while back - very happy with it. Got it sent within EU from the Czech Rebublic for a few dollars euros more. Price was cheaper though when purchased using the Banggood app (I cant remember now, around 10$ cheaper I think), but be warned, they ignore the unsubscribe button on emails :-/

Here a review of its more powerful brother, the iPlay 30, available for around US$160 with coupon BGALIP30 (see video info for shop link)

General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« on: December 23, 2020, 12:11 PM »
Can anyone recommend an app to connect remotely to another smartphone and to control that phone (as an ageing-relative-discovers-smartphone solution).

Teamviewer seems to be getting very poor reviews of late (seems they are disconnecting very often/quickly and pushing users to pro version)
AnyDesk apparently just allows remote viewing of another device.

Airdroid is an option, but not easy to setup on non-root devices. (I tried before and gave up - maybe I'd have more patience now: for setup you need to connect the destination phone via USB to a PC with Airdroid windows app installed.)
I will try this again if there's no other suggestions.

^ I enjoyed that (NOFX) interesting mix.

now the message body is not left empty
always good to put the name in - in case you're searching for the post in five years tiime lol

On a bit of a tangent, here a cover of a Rancid song (Olympia WA) by Molly Tuttle. She's an amazing guitarist, but I would have known her more as a bluegrass musician before this. Some (of the best) punk songs are really catchy/poppy...

About eight years ago I installed Puppy "Wary" Linux on a much older laptop. It went well. At the time the Wary version was for older hardware.
See https://www.donation....msg239862#msg239862

Wary is "the Retro Puppy for old hardware"
(now gets s 404 page...)

This a live (as of this posting) concert from Ireland featuring Hozier amongst others. I'm completely out of touch with, eh, modern music. Have heard his "Take me to Church" single, but that's about it. He *can* sing :-)
