Living Room / Re: Hardware: HDD & Case Queries
« on: May 19, 2021, 02:26 PM »
The top HD is a 2TB HD -- the solution that jumps out to me is to replace it (and any other HD of similar size) with an SSD.  Less heat, much faster, takes up less space.
That's 300€ at least (2 X 2TB), here at any rate. I'm slow to spend that much just because of heat... (don't otherwise need SSDs for my use case)

I should have numbered these.
Cross sections of how the harddrive should be installed; how it is (how *they* are); and how they could work better heatwise:

I see you use those red SATA cables. Replace those with decent SATA cables, you will do yourself a big favor with that.
Will do

You used to have brackets for 5,25" bays that allowed you to mount a 3,5" hard disk in them. I'm sure those can be used to mount a 2,5" drive into a 3,5" drive bay. That solves your problem too. Then there is much less  to no need for extra "active" cooling.
There's only one 3.5" bay and it's unusable the way it's designed. There's space for one 2.5" HD (it's not even a proper bay)
EDIT// it's a while since I added that bracket - it's 3.5" to 2.5" bracket //EDIT
so I mounted a bracket that fits two HDDs onto that. The case is really designed for one sata HD (and whatever you can fit on the motherboard (one SSD in my case)

Living Room / Hardware: HDD & Case Queries

Question #1:
I have two 2.5" HDDs and they are in this casing with about 6mm between them (less than a quarter inch). Do you think is that enough spacing, or should I look for a better solution?
Note the only fan is back of case (this towards the front). It's not a good case for extra HDDs :-(

Screenshot_20210519-173131~2.png

I was even thinking of trying to rotate the frame that the drives are in by 90° (on the long axis) so as the heat could go up. (Would need to bore a hole for that though, could be messy.)

Would also like to discuss case recommendations (maybe I should make a separate thread for that?) -- cable management is such a pita in my very limited experience. Reviews, even of expensive cases almost always say, great case, problems with cable management...

1- Subfolder.  This is the one I will probably use the most.  I wonder if it would be more simple and aesthically pleasing if as soon as you select 'enfolder' that the 'subfolder' window opens immediately.  Type in a name, save and done.
a big +1 for this. Would make it much more speedy and efficient.
I would argue the 'browse' button gets trumped by the earlier suggestion to use a file manager (be it dual-pane or using two windows).

Currently the new sub-folder is named Enfolder_[DATE] (e.g. Enfolder_2021-05-11-23-32-41)
I dont know does anyone use that for the folder name (?)
I would suggest the the sub-folder be named after the first selected file (I can see there might be problems there in which case I would use the other version as suggested by Nikodemos)

Thoughts?
Love the intro.
Thought: send Superboyac a PM, ask him if he'd be interested?

hi Jasong,
lots of people here aren't coders. If you make a request, people will make suggestions of software that might do that already (why reinvent the wheel) and people will make suggestions of workarounds (fwiw they may or may not be coders, doesn't matter...).
In the thread you posted in, a couple of people were negative about the idea of coding something cause they felt the workaround was a better, or a good enough solution. Everyone who posted in that thread was being helpful -- naturally that doesn't mean you agree with or follow their advice.

People who code 'snacks' or apps do it if they want (and have the time) and don't if the idea doesn't interest them. Re donating: it's always nice to donate to say thank you. If you request something, you could always ask per private-message (PM) what the coder's expectations are. I reckon a lot of people donate according to their means. One could also donate to someone who has given particularly helpful advice. There's no rules about any of it though.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« on: April 23, 2021, 01:26 PM »
I'm just getting into "The First Signs" by Genevieve Von Petzinger. It's about the symbols used in cave art during the ice age (50k to 10k years ago). Apparently there were only 32, and they were used repeatedly all over Europe during that time.

She sees them as a precursor to writing.

Talks a lot about when people became "like us", or even "became us". Along the way you kind of learn what she means by this: one aspect is the ability to think about abstract concepts; another the symbolic (non-functional) use of colour, and decoration, engraving (initially abstract).
Says "language and creativity [are] driven by the capacity to think and communicate with symbols."

I find that whole aspect interesting -- what it might mean to be a "modern" human. She takes a lot for granted here: that we are wonderful, says that we use *all* the creative potential of our mind ( !! that, in the intro already, seemed like a bit of a bald statement and got me focusing on how she see modern versus ancient -- she carefully avoids use of "primitive").

Enjoying the book a lot btw.

Fwiw here's an article with another perspective "Humans were not centre stage: how ancient cave art puts us in our place"
https://thebaffler.c...oid-stain-ehrenreich
Suggests that people at the time saw themselves as small in the scheme of things (in the cave art, the only humans are tiny stick figures, surrounded by huge animals -- animals that were also huge irl); also that they had a sense of humour (apparently small clay "Venuses" were intentionally made with flaws, probably for throwing in the fire, where they would explode - a precursor to fireworks)

The Cloud Atlas.

A not bad at all adaptation of the David Mitchell novel by the same name. A quantum metaphysical romp through several centuries of linked souls and events. Some remarkably good performances by Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, and especially Korean actress Doona Bae for her portrayal of a clone by the name of Sonmi-451.
Saw this lately. Did really enjoy it, and would probably watch again. Was a little confused initially with the very quick changes from one story to the next, but the stories were different enough, and strong enough that I started to enjoy that aspect of it -- was done very playfully, and humourously at times.
I generally don't have much time for Hollywood films -- it's not a snobbery thing (I don't have much time for "arty" films either), but this one was good

Hey KodeZwerg,
he's just giving his opinion -- you're allowed to have yours -- or change it if you want. But don't leave the thread because of it !

(also, please ignore this if you want  :-[ )

do thumbnails show when you look at the same folder in Windows Explorer?
Yeah, SC actually uses Windows Explorer for that panel

166
Nice, seems to work well.
I'm not sure would I use this, so dont change anything on my account, but here are a few thoughts:

I think Alt+Shift+S is the shortcut to make a post on donationcoder forums (I mostly only use Alt+Shift+P which previews my post).
I tried disabling the shortcut, but of course that's designed for people who dont want to see the taskbar at all (not me).

Doesnt minimise or close to tray (both would seem logical to me, well, especially the first). I think it only shows in the tray when 'start minimised' is selected(?)

Tray icon tooltip says "Click to show random sounds app".

Wasn't there a software here on DC that listed all hotkeys in use?
("Keymapper" doesn't find it.)

Living Room / Re: Looking for smartphone
« on: March 31, 2021, 05:01 PM »
The 4a 5G OTOH came down from €499 to 399. So I got the 4a 5G, delivered today (I just setting it up now).
Some random thoughts. I haven't even really tested this much, but can say the camera is miles ahead (that wasn't intentional @Miles :-)) of my last phone the Moto G6. Fwiw I always thought the G6 camera was good until I printed out a bunch of pictures lately (over sharpened, too much noise reduction, really did not look good).
The pixel camera is so much better -- a much better dynamic range, colours are fairly good, is great at night in town, good in low light. But I still feel kind of disappointed. They've had the same camera sensor and software for years. At 12 megapixel, it's fine -- you could print quite large if you wanted to. But as there's no real zoom, zooming in means cropping at best (or resizing at worst). They missed an opportunity to keep ahead of (or keep up with) the pack here -- even 16 or 18 MP would have given users much more freedom to crop.

Otherwise: screen is lovely, I find I'm using the phone instead of my tablet to watch videos/TV. Android 11 is nice, lots of dark. A few bugs, but that's life I guess. I'm happy with the purchase, don't know would I have been if I paid more (it's currently 50€ more than I paid for it).

169
@hulkbuster, I think the only way you can prove the problem, is to delete/move a large amount of files, or files that take up a large amount of space. Then, if that space doesn't show up....
The advice on this thread is very good, essential even, for an OS + files on a small partition (been there). You don't seem to have tried a lot of it.
For example the paging file could be gone crazy -- have you tried the suggestion there etc etc

EDIT// REQUEST #2:
what I need with the dates is the ability to replace newer files with older. This not an option with Syncovery or Dopus...

Isn't that just overwrite no matter what? That's an option.
I now have two sets of data -- neither is older or newer, they all jumbled up -- that's what I mean by a mess!
Will see how I get on with Antidupl.

173
Will check out Antidupl.
I hadn't thought of metadata. Did have a couple of different dams (or whatever they called) in the past. (Won't be able to attack it all again for a few day though.)
Thanks both for the input.

174
Just to give some background:
computer HDD and main backup drive both gave up the ghost a while back.
I'm cobbling files together from various incomplete backups.

I notice with photos that some are more recent versions with different file sizes. This possibly from e.g. rotating in Dopus (and saving rotation) but with many files I can see no reason for the different modified date / size. So if anything I want to overwrite the newer with the older version. (FWIW this does not seem to be an option either in Syncovery.)

But it's such a mess I just want to get the same folder structure on both sides, then I can look at the dates closer.

EDIT// REQUEST #2:

A good Sync programme will offer to move files on one side, that exist on the other side -- but in a different location.
e.g. via Snycovery:

Screenshot - 2021-03-28 , 11_42_48_ver001.png

I want to be able to do this *without* copying files -- especially without *overwriting* files (e.g. due to more recent date or different size).
Syncovery insists that I copy in one direction.

Do you know of any software that will move but not copy ?

EDIT// I've discovered a way to do this in Syncovery, it's fairly manual i.e. not quick but does the job (see 'Leave alone' in context menu below) -- still interested in any easy alternatives..
