ContextMenu Commander
« on: August 02, 2005, 08:29 AM »
DonationCoder.com will soon announce a utility that I predict will become a favorite here..
a tool for easily creating custom right-click context menu items, in a way easier and more powerful than seen in any existing program.

it will also come with a bunch of context menu tools.

we welcome your suggestions for simple right-click context menu tools you'd like to see
(like move-to-specific folder, copy path to clipboard, etc.)

if anyone feels up for it, i'd love some help collecting links to and lists of existing tiny little right-click context menu tools, and the functions they provide.

ie, things like rjh extensions, http://www.rjhsoftwa...e.com/rjhextensions/
copy path to clipboard, http://stefan.bertel...clipboardpath.en.htm
etc.

and also i'd love to get suggestions for right click context menu tools that you'd like to see.

How about SendTo (at http://www.trogsoft.com/products/sendto/) which extends and improves the shell Send to command.

Also http://home.worldonline.dk/ninotech/ has two shell utils I have found useful. Path copy allows you to copy file names or path names to the clip board in long and short formats, and Date edit allows you to quickly modify file date.

How about a quick way of changing file associations for the type of file you right click on?

I know you can do it through the Folder Options and then search for the file type, but it would be nice to have a quick way to adjust all the file association options associated with a particular file type (oen, edit, print etc), or even perhaps establish new ones.

i can't really think of any novel features to add but i'd certainly like to see some kind of option that allows you to remove items from the right click menus.

i've tried a few tools that are meant to do this already but they don't appear to work 100% or can lead to other problems.

the right click context menu that appears with internet explorer (although i use Maxthon) is particularly annoyingly full of crap.

i know a lot of this unwanted junk appears because of the programs i've installed but some of them don't provide you with a choice of whether you want them to add things to the right click menu - they just do it without your permission and with now way of disabling it.

can we have a way of regaining control of the context menus please?

piky basket is another cool idea we will be implementing as one of the ContextMenu plugins:

changing file extensions is a good idea, especially if you remembered past settings to undo.
and copy paths to clipboard is certainly one we are going to do, with some nice extras :)
we will definitely be having a robust copy/move to favorites item (send to stuff).

as for managing other context menus, unfortunately its another kind of product entirely, though it would be nice to use in conjunction with this; i used to know a good one.

I'll really have to second Nudone's post, as I'm constantly trying to find ways to clean up unwanted  menu add-ons, usually having to do a reg edit, which can be a pain in ass. Every prgm I've tried so far leaves a great deal to be desired and causes other probs that don't always show up right away :(

just FYI only

i had used

DMEX-Menu 3.19
Explorer Contextmenu Extension
- Bulk rename
- Select with mask *.txt
- open DOS-Box here
- open two WinExplorere side by side
- recent folders to jump to
...

and its advantage
DMEX-Bar
Version 10:
- Copy/Move on reboot commands in the "File operations" menu
- Sizeable edit boxes in toolbar
- Enter multiple masks in "Select files"
- Standalone unsplit utility
- Copy UNC paths in the "Copy to clipboard" menu
- Show UNC paths in "Change Drive" menu
- New options in the "Configuration" menu
- New icons
- Changes in the "Run programs" parameters. You will have to rebuild the program list. Sorry.
- New tool: DMEXDir. Adds a new toolbar to the explorer
to replace the address toolbar.
Shows the current path as buttons for a quick change to a parent directory.
- Drag&Drop support in DMEXCpl
- "Run Programs" and "Zip file" added to in DMEXMenu
- New Treesize column in DMEXCol (still experimental)

no home page, only to find on simtel
e.g.

Hi mouser,

I've been looking for such a program for a long time, so here you have a list of some of them that I have tried (you must know most -if not all- of them, but just in case):

Context Menu Editor http://www.bartdart.com/
ShellMenu View http://www.nirsoft.n...shell_menu_view.html
Fast Explorer http://thesoftpro.tr...wnloads/fe/index.htm
File Manu Tools http://www.lopesoft.com/
Context Edit http://www.ramlende.com/utilities.html
PCMag's ContextEdit
CMenu Extender http://www.geocities...er_inc/download.html
Context Magic http://www.contextma....com/menu-extension/
Perfect Menu http://www.pitrinec.com/pmeindex.htm
Context Menu Control Freak & Mmm http://www.hace.us-inc.com/
jv16 PowerTools http://www.jv16.org/
IE Toolbar Manager http://www.westbyte.com/ietool/

Then you have these two web sites that deal with the subject:
http://www.msfn.org/....php?showtopic=52524
http://www.codeproject.com/shell/

and also i'd love to get suggestions for right click context menu tools that you'd like to see.

None of the above do ALL what they portend to do, but where I find a real good Context Menu Commander missing is in regards to Internet Explorer. jv16 allows you to delete certain entries and IE Toolbar Manager to delete and to add, but the real problem is, IMO, that neither gives you the "power to actually tame it".

Let me try to explain: you install a program (helper, BHO) and it's entries appear in the Context Menu. Then you install another one and in too many cases it "bullies out" the previous entries. You go check the Registry and they are all there, but not all of them appear in the Context Menu. Using the above mentioned programs you may delete one and see if it allows another one, but (1) once deleted you can't get it back unless you reinstall and (2) there's no way to be sure of which one will show up. If you then install another program the problem gets worse.

My apologies for the length of this post, but this is an issue I am most interested in. I have asked around even in one paid support service forum and nobody has been able to come up with an answer: how to take control of the IE Context Menu and force it to show the entries you want and hide those you don't.

So I'd be very very happy if the program you are thinking of would approach this problem. My expertise is nil and I don't know if it's possible. If it is, I hope you consider my suggestion. AFAIK, it would be a first (I am not sure about IE Toolbar Manager ...it's Help File is useless to a non-tech person).

My English is rather limited, but I hope the idea is clear.

Thank you for reading this far :) Best wishes,

Sandro

hi there mouser,

i'm eagerly awaiting for your app & since u asked, i'd like list down some of stuff that i've come across...

  • NirExt v1.01 : adds 3 useful context menu extensions, i.e. Folder Properties, Advanced Run & Create Shortcut+.
  • Unlocker : allows you to delete files/folders that are locked by Windows.
  • Parameteriser : add command-line parameters to any program in Explorer. (similar to Advanced Run of NirExt)
  • CopyPath :  Copy path of files or directories to the clipboard. With options such as appending to the clipboard and adding prefix/suffix to the selection.
  • Drop To DOS : right click on any folder and choose the Drop to DOS option to take to you a command prompt within that folder. (i know there are gazilions of other programs that does the same thing... ;-))
  • CopyURL : copy different information from your Internet Shortcut files such as Copy URL, Copy Link and Copy Name to the clipboard. This is so good that I always keep the DLL handy & just run regsvr32 on it. No installation needed...
  • shortcutEXP : open a folder that a shortcut is pointing to.
  • Saivert's ShortCut Shell Ext: gives you two new menu items, i.e. "Goto folder for target" and "Resolve Shortcut" (shortcutEXP's less-endowed cousin)
  • HobComment : permits you to add/edit comments for each one of your directories
  • 1-4a rename : File-renamer. Can be added to the folder context-menu with a reg file... (a personal favourite...)
  • Shell Object Editor : This is not a context-menu tool but this is another favourite of mine. It allows one to create a shell object, like the "My Documents" folder. They are not real folders on your hard disk, they only refer to real folders.
ok, that will do for now, i guess...

best regards,
lanux

don't worry, this program is coming.
the main point of this app will be letting you customize and add new (and let people easily make new) context menu extensions.
but i am going to try to include a whole bunch of commands with its release.

keep these lists coming!
lanux those are some great finds.
i expect that at time of release, contextmenu commander will come with tools to do everything that these from your list currently do:
nirext, parametizer, copypath, droptodos, copyurl, shortcutexp, saivert's.

this is not to knock these tools, only to try to provide one highly customizable tool that provides these commands in an attractive way and lets people add new ones as well.  plus this should be an ideal way for amateur coders to make thier own context menu extensions.

we will also be adding stuff like hobcomment in a variety of ways we can discuss.

i fully expect ContextMenu Commander to be one of our most popular tools.  I'm hoping for release in a month or so.

To clarify something:

while it would be nice to also add the ability to customize OTHER context menu extensions, such tools do exist (see spj'd post for a great list), the main job of ContextMenu Commander is to let you CREATE NEW Custom context menu extensions, and provide a single customization point for a bunch of plugin context menus.

That is, ContextMenu commander will not be for cleaning up your existing menus.

Most recent right click I added ...

Boot Deleter
Boot Deleter is an application that adds itself to the Windows Explorer (shell) context menu and allows you to mark files and folders to be deleted when Windows next restarts. This allows you to delete items that are locked by running programs. Items can also be marked for deletion by passing the file/folder as a command-line argument or by dropping the item onto the Boot Deleter executable icon.

I'm not sure if this is an intended feature of ContextMenu Commander, but this tool, Mmm, allows hiding of the context menu, and it's so cool..

Please add a plugin that lets you send shortcuts to a list of favourite folders.
This would be perfect for quickly adding and organizing content in custom start menu folders, quicklaunch, etc.

Also if you could name the shortcut before creating in the chosen location it would be perfect.

:D

Can't wait to check this out!

Some of my Favorites

That's all I can think of at the moment, for the most part the ones I had are either already mentioned, or I have forgotten about.

Absolutely cool. It's ages I'm searching for a good tool for that :)
I've been using Shelltoys XP found on a cover cd of a mag. Sweet little app. Most used: Copy path to clipboard. You get addicted :) but many others... print folder listing, select by filter, etc

bye :)

that sure seems like a great idea, get various *useful* options at the distance of a click!
there's one feature i can't find anywhere that i think would be great if you could include in contextmenu commander:
the possibility to change the order of te items in the context menu (the ones that are put by other programs, like pikybasket),because sometimes (as happens with piky in my computer),the options are too far to be handy ;)
i dunno if it can be done (since i didnt find any app that allowed me to do this),but it would be great if u could add this :D
thanks!!!
