IDEA: Duplicate files in a single click
« on: July 24, 2005, 08:40 PM »
Hi,

sometimes inside the windows explorer, i need to make a quick backup of a particular file. this is how i go about it, i right-click on that file, choose 'copy' then right-click on an empty spot choose 'paste'. for me this is one-click too many. ;-)

so i was wondering is there a possibility of conjuring up an app/script which can do this in a single click. just right-click on a file & choose 'duplicate' and a carbon copy is created...
and also if the output file's name is configurable then it'll be a bonus...

thanks in advance
best regards,
lanux

hi lanux,
you can do Ctrl+C followed by Ctrl+V to create a copy of any file, which will create "Copy of ..."

ps. DonationCoder.com is going to come out soon with a new context menu extension with tons of features, and one of the features will be very flexible rightclick on file/folder and create backup copies with various options.

thanx 4 replying, i knew the keyboard combo but somewhat it gets in the way because i have take my eyes off the screen & i have trouble focusing on the key-board (i know, i'm getting old ;-))

but it's ok, since DonationCoder.com coming up with a new context menu tool then i'll just wait for it... btw for this tool, pls put in some options that enables us to show/hide which commands we want on the context-menu...

tks mouser

lanux, you might find it a less painful process if you 'right click' on the file and drag it to an empty spot, let go and click 'Copy here' from the menu that pops up.

i know it's still more than the 1 click method you are after but it's a more 'flowing' kind of method than the stop-start click click click click way you are doing at the moment.

yes, in fact that is the main thing of this tool, it will be a super-easy, super customizable context menu helper.
it will come with a bunch of our own unique tools, but easily let you configure your own, and customize it EXACTLY as you want it, with complete freedom.

Ever tried FileTargets by Moon Software?  I think I found out it about on these forums so you guys may already be aware of it.  Dont know that it does exactly what you want, but it allows you to have easy access for copying or moving files to specific folders.  Just an idea.  Also, mouser, it may be a good piece of software to look at to get ideas for your own context menu tool.

yes, filetargets is nice freeware, though not updated and doesn't work in my file manager; but adding context menus for move to specifc folder and copy to specific folder is on the agenda for the "DonationCoder ContextMenu Tool"

rjh extensions are quite nice (a warning though, i used them for years without incident, but at somepoint on my new computer, either because it was winxp or because i was using a new file manager or antivirus or something, they were causing my shell to crash or hang when i did a right-click contect menu; took me a week to pinpoint the problem. just a heads up).

ps.
donationcoder will soon be releasing a custom right click context menu tool that should blow all others out of the water :)

yeah, i had a look but it hasn't been updated for some time (since 2001) so i'd stay put for mouser's context-menu thingy, which sounds very promising... ;-)

tks anyway...

sorry to revive an old thread...

Update: Create .bak by Serenity does the trick... and has no side-effects on WinXP
"Create .bak" makes a copy of the selected file and gives it an additional .bak extension like:
file.exe --> file.exe.bak

If a folder was selected, this makes a copy of the folder including all of its contents:
/folder/file.txt --> /folder.bak/file.txt

Create .bak will automatically overwrite files of the same name unless /safe is specified in the command line,
eg: "C:\Program Files\Create .bak\createbak.exe" "/safe" "%1"

lanux

I'll have to give that Create .bak a try.

I've traditionally held Ctrl (easy to hit--it's in the corner) and dragged the file/folder.  This forces a Copy.

Additionally, Shift forces Move, while Alt forces Shortcut.

These are all very handy to know.

yes i agree, it'll come in very handy to know the short-cuts. but for me, having a gui option is a safety net, in case fingers slip...  ;)
btw, serenity has complemented "Create .bak" with "Convert to .bak" and "Unbak".
