No apology needed, the app is out there for people to use and test, I'm just craving some encouragement :)

I'm probably not the best tester having no significant other, but am really enjoying asking myself the questions -- in slideview.
I dont think it can ask random questions? That could be helpful.

Could also be used like your popup quotes (or what do you think?), could the lists for that be used here?

PS you could add the beta link to the OP, make it easier to find, on a phone at any rate :-[

There is an option to set slides to show in random order:
Screenshot - 10_20_2019 , 11_42_27 AM.pngNANY 2020 Release - Android App - DiscussionList

I actually worked on this a bit to make it so that the "random" question order does not change, and remembers where you left off, so that you won't encounter the same question twice.
You can "reset" the random order when you get to the end (or whenever you want).
And note that you are shown a random list of the questions in your current section when you trigger the slideshow mode.  So if you want to see all questions you need to trigger slideshow from ALL section.

Note also that by default, if you hit the back button from within the slideshow mode, you exit the app, and it will relaunch into slideshow mode when next started.  This is done so that you can essentially keep the app always in slideshow mode.  You can change this option from preferences if you generally prefer the listview mode.

Sorry I missed that 'random' option -- very nice

Would either of these be possible (in order of importance):

  • an indication that there is a note related to current item
  • a method of easily accessing/reading note/s related to the question (edit is an option here)

this is all really well thought out.
I love the slideshow mode: focus on the question, no distractions -- to really answer some of these questions could take a long time (or is that just me ;-)

an indication that there is a note related to current item

There is actually a very subtle indicator, in slide view mode: the page number at the bottom of the page is shown in bold.  I have to think of a good way to indicate it in listview mode.  Maybe just an asterisk or something.
There is an edit button (pencil icon) at the top of slide mode menu, you can click that to edit the current question and add a note.

Note you can also click the page number to advance the slide, in addition to normal swipe left and right.

[edit]
The new builds have a dedicated "virtual" tab that show all items with non-blank notes (and another virtual tab showing all items marked as Favorites).  Makes it very easy to find such items.

Oh yeah when we go for our weekly walk, it's lots of meandering discussion around each question so it can take hours to get through them all if we are in a talkative mood and on a long walk.  That's why I worked hard to make it so the app remembers where you were and doesn't change the order of questions if you come back to it even days later.

I'm happy to add more question sets if anyone here wants to write some original ones.

Another feature I was thinking of adding (to all of my android apps), is the option to mark items as a "favorite" which would show them in an automatically created "Favorites" tab.

Implemented in latest beta.

Thanks mouser (I should have read all the OP first...)
Even longer notes are very readable in edit mode

I see also a simple list is importable -- I can look at the lists from popup quotes and modify if needed.

There's some good questions in "the six minute diary" that can be asked/answered each day. (Fwiw some questions there I don't relate to / some schmaltzy quotes as well imo.) I would presume though that as a set of questions that they would be copyrighted. https://www.amazon.c...titude/dp/B07J1Q1P6R

In general though, that could be a good subset of questions: those that can be asked each / every day.

Yep! The only thing that needs to change is as described in this post: https://www.donation....msg433063#msg433063

  • The file needs to be named: discussionlistq_*******.txt
  • The first line of file needs to start @FILEFORMAT:CB1
  • Then there should be one line specifying the tag to use for the questions to follow, like @TAG:PopQuotes1
  • And then each item on its own line after that, with \n used for linebreaks if desired.

Added two new "virtual" sections, one for "Favorites" and one for all items with non-blank Notes fields.  Now it's very easy to browse the list of items with notes or organize your favorites.
If you don't use these features the virtual sections will not be shown, so it won't get in your way.

You can mark an item as a favorite from the edit screen.  All of my android apps will have this option in future builds.  All items marked as Favorite will show up in the Favorites tab.

New update uploaded, fixed a network access and cleartext error that newer android os might get when running the Browse for Imports function.

The value of the "virtual" sections seems clear to me now; I've created a new option in the tool menu to show "bulk" checkboxes and a "bulk" section.  This makes it easier for you to select a bunch of items and then do operations on them (delete them, etc.).
It's not super important for this app, but it does seem like a useful feature to add to my apps, and will make it easier to perform bulk operations on items in future apps.

What are my Strengths?
What are my weaknesses?
what can i always be counted on for?
what can i never be counted on for?
what does everyone know about me?
What's my superpower?
If i were an animal, what animal would i be?
what other questions should i ask?

The way the widget works is it displays a single random item (from your chosen section), and you can tap to move to the next.

Got it working here.  Nice that you can tap to move to the next -- there's no way to go backwards, right?

Initially I wasn't sure how to get the widget to display once its preferences screen showed up.  I think pressing the back key / button works.  Is that right?  It turned out that whatever the widget display settings were, I failed to notice the widget on the home screen  :P

You could use it for random words of wisdom instead of questions.

Are you a mind-reader?

Not in the widget, but i could probably fix that by making another tap location you could tap on widget to go back..

Yeah the preferences dialog is just back button to leave.. I would prefer a set of "Save/Cancel" buttons, but I guess this is how android wants to do it.
