NANY 2020 Release - Android App - DiscussionList
« on: October 04, 2019, 03:04 PM »
Simple app that lets you manage a collection of relationship/discussion questions, to facilitate weekly discussions, etc.
In the past we have used a sheet of paper that we bring with us when we go on walks.

Youtube video:

DOWNLOAD and LINKS:

Features:

You can organize questions into categories with tags, etc.

There will be some included questions, and of course you can add your own.  And there is now an easy way to import from some premade question lists via the web.

There are 2 main modes, one is just the standard listview management view that you see in all of my android apps:
Screenshot - 10_10_2019 , 7_57_32 PM.pngNANY 2020 Release - Android App - DiscussionList

And the other is a new minimalist "slideshow" type view where you can swipe left and right to move through the questions one by one:
Screenshot - 10_10_2019 , 7_57_58 PM.pngNANY 2020 Release - Android App - DiscussionList

With almost 1,000 questions imported from www.conversationstartersworld.com (will not be included by default because of copyright ownership), just to demonstrate that you could have a lot of random questions, organized into sections by tag:

Note that when you engage the "slideshow" swipe single-page question mode, it shows (randomly ordered, if you like) only the items from your current section, so it's easy to just browse questions with certain tags or from certain sources.

A new simple import function lets you import a text file of questions, with one question per line.  Makes it easy to import lots of questions.

I took it to mean that you need to couple or supplement goals with an open mind that invites an expression of your partner's concerns.

This is a great tool.

An idea (which adds some level of complexity which is likely outside the scope of the app) would be to add a time stamped highlights/notes section for each question that is added.  Personally I would love it to be an recorded audio memo with some tags because my partner and I have a similar process. After having a check-in (what we call it) we sometimes record an audio or video where we try to recap and highlight what we talked about, and where we are about it.  These have been interesting to go back and revisit.  We have also sometimes started and email chain to carry on topics.

Yes, that's what I intended to say, thanks wraith808 :)

would be to add a time stamped highlights/notes section for each question that is added.

I could add the ability to add notes for each question, without too much trouble.

I have added the ability to add notes to the questions as you are viewing them.  Though note that the notes are not visible unless you click the edit button.  I may have to find a better way to show a hint when browsing questions to indicate when notes have been added to a question.

I think adding timestamped note, would be a nice addition. It might be possible then to link to the audio memos, videos or even photo for our use case.
I understand that the suggestion of adding media creates a much harder hurdle.

Widget support added.. You can make a widget which shows a single item (like the main slide view), and click to advance.

@mouser: Re: NANY 2020 Pledge - Android App - DiscussionList.
Keep the suggestions coming.
If anyone wants to help test beta version, let me know.

I think the suggestions would be akin to "requirements" rules, so I guess this is partially about the incremental development/refinement of a prototype tool to meet some defined requirements and some as yet unknown/undiscovered/undefined potential requirements.
I'd be happy to help as a ß tester - it could be quite interesting, as, during the testing process, I could get to understand the tool better in terms of what it does now, as well as its potentially expanding context for possibilities of use. I quite enjoy being a ß tester for a couple of Android apps at present and I enjoyed being a ß tester for other software (including Google WAVE and NoteFrog and Wezinc) for the same reasons.

Ok here's the beta version for any alpha/beta testers: https://www.donation...sionlist-release.apk

It comes with a handful of questions built in.. You can remove them from the Tools menu.  Or just put your own questions in their own section.

If you're interested here are some additional question files you can import.

The program now has an import browse function that will automatically display this list of files and let you import them from within the app with just one click.  But here's the direct url if you want to download manually:

They are taken from https://conversationstartersworld.com/.

They are plain ascii text files, and can be imported using the Import function under the tools menu, though you will have to download and place them on your sdcard for your phone, etc.
I will probably add the ability to import via a url soon. Import via url now supported.

The file needs to be named: discussionlistq_*******.txt if its to be included on my web page of auto-downloadable lists.

The file format is simple and you can use it to import your own question lists.. It looks like this:

@FILEFORMAT:CB1

// File format for simple importing to codybones apps
// The FIRST LINE OF FILE *MUST* BE @FILEFORMAT:CB# (where # is the file format #, e.g. @FILEFORMAT:CB1)
//
// Lines starting with // will be treated as comments and ignored, as will blank lines
//
// Each item must be on its own single line, and will result in a single entry being created of the default application type
//
// You can use @TAG:tagstring on a line by itself to indicate that all items below that line will have that tag assigned to them (e.g. @TAG:WORK)

// https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/11/fashion/no-37-big-wedding-or-small.html?_r=0
@TAG:NYT

Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
Would you like to be famous? In what way?
Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

The new version of DiscussionList that I've just uploaded has it's own built-in browser dialog for importing question sets from the donationcoder website.  So if you choose the Tools -> Import -> Browse function, you should see a list of question sets you can choose to download and import from the web.  This list is maintained on the DonationCoder website so it can be easily updated by me as needed.

If people want to make and share some question sets I can add them to the list that others can import.  It might be nice to have some mindfullness/meditation/problem solving question sets..

The way the widget works is it displays a single random item (from your chosen section), and you can tap to move to the next.   You could use it for random words of wisdom instead of questions.

@mouser: My apologies, but I've had to switch focus to some urgent/unexpected issues that have cropped up locally and thus can't promise to be able to spend time in ß testing to give you any useful feedback right now.
