Google has a backup function that should make it easier to move your contacts, mail, photos, apps, etc. from one Android phone to another Android phone.

I have no experience with it, but should be ok. Google is pretty familiar with Android....

If you have an iPhone and you have it backup to iCloud, all you need to do is log in with your iCloud account and everything download and will show up. If Android, what @Shades said.

If you are going from iPhone to Androud or vise versa, if I remember right each has their own way of importing from a different OS. You'll have to research that.

Doesn't Moto have a transfer app? Google and Samsung do, I'd think other top tier makers would as well. That is like THE premiere task that you have to do when you get a new phone.

Not for at least 2 years, out of interest I went looking when I got my G5+

Google's backup of apps/settings is hit or miss, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes you can't even enable it - which I can't even though It has worked on my current phone previously.

The only 100% working method I've found is unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root it using Magisk or something else, and then install Titanium Backup + Root - something I've done with every Android device I've ever bought.

Unfortunately I use apps that don't work if the phone is rooted.

Is there any other solution?

Settings->Google->Backup ... you do know you can search for settings in Settings ... right?

I see my Google backup is ON and there is a gmail account of mine as a backup account.

Shall I assume that if I login to my new phone with that gmail account, it will restore everything?

Can I check that?

the only app i know that will backup app data without root is helium but it has not been updated in a long time.

Doesn't work with Motorola since about 4 or 5 years ago, something they warn you about and that I have tried.

If I use Phone Explorer to backup the apps, will it work? Will the settings be backed up too? Can I just restore the backup to my new device?

Based on my own experiences as an Android user for over a decade, the answer is sometimes, for some apps, your settings will transfer over.  Sometimes they will not.  Sometimes, an app will offer a settings export feature that results in a file you can import on your new phone.  It's all part of the fun.  Haha.
