Since 2007 we have held an annual event that we call NANY (New Apps for the New Year), where we ask the coders who hang out on DonationCoder to create some new piece of free software and share it with the world on January 1st of the new year.

NANY is really the funnest thing we do on this site, and it's one of the few times we can all play together. There are no winners or losers, it's simply a celebration of programming and creating new software and sharing it with the world. You can target any operating system (desktop or mobile) or even make a web-based tool. It can be a game, utility, large application, whatever. DC takes makes no claim on your software, it's just an event to encourage you to share a creation with others. Best of all, everyone who participates gets a free commemorative coffee mug.

This will be the ~~10th~~ 11th NANY? Damn.
It would be nice if we could get an alternate mug design to offer this year.. Anyone up for it?
Maybe we can offer t-shirts this time too, for those who are overflowing with mugs

I think I need to make up for my lack of NANY fanfare last year.. Let's try to revive it a little this year -- perhaps with a nice alternative mug design and maybe some other "rewards".

Final Call for NANY 2017 Participants -- Deadline Jan 1st, 2017

The January 1 deadline for NANY 2017 participation is fast approaching!

We need help spreading the word about the event. If you know a coder who might be interested in releasing a new freeware/donationware application by January 1st, or a forum or website where the announcement might reach coders, please help us spread the word!

There are even a few beta entries up for those who like to test things early (including 4 or 5 android apps by me), with more on the way.

Well, that might compensate a little for me not having enough time to participate this year

While I'm currently occupying a lot of my time writing a program in Autohotkey that's completely useless for anyone who doesn't use a particular piece of software at my workplace -- no NANY possibilities there although I'm hopeful that it'll be ready for release on the same timescale

I got at least some of the way to making a new graphic for the legendary NANY mug a couple of years back -- is it too late to offer to update it?

I decided to write an additional application just to meet the deadline for NANY while freezing my work on the other (more useful) application I actually intended to write. Turned out it was too complex. Maybe later in 2017. Anyway, expect me.

It's definitely not too late -- in fact we would love new NANY mug designs from anyone who is willing to contribute one!
We can let people choose which design they want so the more the merrier!

Sure. I was trying to do something decorative but not flamboyant (the fixed-pitch meme to represent coding has been done to death, I feel, but maybe that's just me!) and I pretty much grabbed the first thing I didn't hate, if memory serves. But I have hundreds if not thousands of fonts available and no particularly strong views. [Some, though. I'm not going to do it in Comic Sans. However much you plead.

I dont like the 'plasticky' feel of it, and I dont like the way the numbers are done in the font.
Afraid I'm not good at creative suggestions, just able to say what I dont like :-/

For what it's worth, the main DonationCoder.com font is Arial Black.
