Sounds great Stephen (& mouser of course)

One thing I am still really excited about is the prospect of seeing the site constantly updated by anybody who writes articles for DC. These will all be given a nice place to live on the main website rather than just a forum post, and the writers can keep things up-to-date far more easily through their own Editor Admin Page!

If anybody has any questions, then feel free to ask and I will happily answer!

• Not been discussed, but I don't really see why not. I guess these could be either embedded on Joomla directly, or using something like "Disqus" - Again though, it hasn't been discussed so...yeah...I like the thought of it/would be happy to include the ability to do so! (Afterthought: I guess there might be a way for it to automatically create a forum post, then the comments would actually be held on the forum, but be able to be posted to/viewed from the article page...no idea if that is even possible and I'm literally just throwing out a random idea there!!!)

I'd say it's an important capability:
could be limited to forum members; but using other options, e.g. disqus as you say, could draw in new people.

a very good example of where wiki-style editing would have been of great help was Steven Avery's fully free software utilities for biz use.
Over a period of years, no-one is going to maintain a list like that.
A full wiki would not be necessary, but something enabling multiple editors could help keep something like that alive and up-to-date.

if comments were possible, one moderator could give other active posters moderator status. Something along those lines allowing more input would be of help.

Just a random thought:

1) Sites with both a blog and a forum need to be careful about 'diluting' user content into blog comments and forum replies, ie creating two instead of one place to share thoughts on same thing. Ideally (imo) to comment on a blog post you would automatically redirect the user to the forum but the issue is forum requires registration and presumably blog comments are open...so yes I guess this is just a thought.

absolutely.

1) Sites with both a blog and a forum need to be careful about 'diluting' user content into blog comments and forum replies

definitely an issue we have to figure out.

one of the nice things about the new cms is that on cms pages we now have a sidebar showing recent posts on the FORUM that are related to that page. So software pages now show the most recent posts about the program from the forum section for that program.

I've seen some sites where blog posts posted create a forum thread for that post- their forum is the commenting system for the blog. That might be a way to consolidate the conversation.

What mouser said about being able to edit docs using the CMS system sounds important and useful -- at the same time, the option of being able to work with one's preferred tools (e.g. for editing) and then with minimal fuss update/post would be nice.

I'll leave the first one to mouser (Seeing as editing off the website is something I have no clue about)

2nd: Nope, no preview link - asked mouser to lock it down because it's more fun to be able to surprise people when it's closer to completion (because, right now, things change, a LOT, so anybody who sees it, won't get a true representation of what to expect ^_^) - Though, if mouseman wants to offer a preview, then that's up to him

Re the commenting on a blog post:
the idea each blog post (automatically?) get a forum thread - which thread would then be shown in the sidebar --
that could work well.

And there's still lots of sites that require registration to comment, so I dont see a problem with that here (would probably have some advantages too -- less throwaway posts).

This project has been on-again and off-again for years. Just an update that we are getting seriously close.. Most of the site has been migrated.. Now we are just cleaning up pages and moving over the more ornery dynamic stuff..
I have to say that I continue to be surprisingly impressed with Joomla as the cms engine. I can't speak to it's efficiency and speed but I can speak to how well organized things are and how smooth an experience it has been using it and writing custom modifications for it.

We still have quite a bit of stuff left to do -- this stuff always takes longer than expected -- but I can't imagine us not moving to the new CMS version of DonationCoder before the end of this year (2017).

If anyone has noticed that I haven't been super active on the forum for the last month or so it's because I have been working my ass off on the new DC cms and cleaning up old code.. It's really starting to come together -- can't wait to show it off..

Again -- this major transition to a proper CMS system for the DC website is not about improving the look of the site, it's mostly about making the long-term, back-end maintenance of the site significantly more flexible and sustainable, and make it much easier to add and modify content. But some moderate attempt is being made to improve the look and feel of the site, while keeping the same "personality".
