That looks extremely cool.

However, I'm still pretty much terrified of IoT.

I've read the policy papers and whatnot, and I'm utterly terrified.

Know what the "security" section reads?

Out of scope.

While this looks like a really cool little device, the security issue in IoT is still an issue.

For example, your nice little Wi-Fi equipped automatic cat feeder provides a way for Johnny Nasty to download kitty pron onto other device on your network. Cue the police, and your days as a kitty cat rights activist are doomed.

But that's just the start.

Would I use it... Probably if it fit my needs.

But... I'm still pretty much on the terrified side for now.

The lure of being able to program in any language against an API to deal with all that stuff... that's just way too cool...

I need to learn Python.

It's cheaper for the Onion+Dock+OLED than it is for the MicroView+Dock, and more capable.

Crap, there goes more money I could use elsewhere ... curse you wraith!

Using a .io domain name instead of one of the major TLDs. -3 right off the top

I have had a lot of problems with sites on .io domains being either ponzi schemes or outright scams.

The concept is solid though, and if they have a working prototype then it looks to me like this could be a very interesting thing.

It even uses a Linux based OS that I am familiar with, using OpenWRT-equipped routers as wifi hotspots in my workplace in favor of actual business class access points.

I'll keep tabs on it as it progresses.

My personal take on it was that they had more than enough Kickstarter support without me, and they promised to open-source their hardware designs.  I figure if it turns into something successful, there will be plenty of opportunities to buy Onion Omega devices and add-ons.

So you discredit all sites on a TLD rather than the specific sites?  Because there are more .com scams than there are .io domains in all likelihood.  Just saying...

The only .io sites I've heard of have been reputable. Two off the top of my head:

It may very well be legit.

But lately I've seen a lot of startups and pump & dump scams with sites based on the .io tld.

Most of them have been bitcoin related though.

The general plan though is to pitch an idea and collect funding for it, then go quiet for a few months during which time little progress is made, followed by a surge of drama as a web of lies comes crashing in.

Its not at all for certain, especially because there are a lot of scams on any TLD out there, but seeing a new startup using .io is making me a little hesitant. Beyond that everything else looks amazing, I want to try these devices out.

And next to his desktop friends:

Although the RasPi2 has now been configured as a Tor WiFi Hotspot.

I have mine also- but I've not been able to do anything with it.  The power switch broke off first thing- and I'm not the only one.  They said I can turn it on with a needle, but I haven't gotten around to trying.

Ouch! :(

I tried looking for specs for the Onion Omega, but they're surprisingly scant. The promo pages say it can run "full Linux" which makes me think it's x86 or x86_64. But small devices like this are typically ARM. Can anyone here provide clarification on the architecture of this thing?

According to:

  http://community.img...ardware/onion-omega/

Onion Omega features a MIPS CPU from Qualcomm Atheros and runs Linux (OpenWrt)

Yeah, I saw that. But "Atheros AR9331 400Mhz" didn't tell me what architecture the CPU was. I suppose I could/should have googled the specific make/model to find out, but for some reason I didn't think of that at the time. :D

It's a lot cleaner when displaying text, (a better quality image would probably help too), you can choose what to display, (and scroll), through the web console.

Would have had it going a month ago but I forgot to order the dock so I could actually plug the display in  :-\

Pretty simple to put something on the display:

Not going to work too well on a monochrome screen :)

Don't tell me you're missing skippy?
