March 2015 will represent the 10th Anniversary of DonationCoder.com.

I'd like help coming up with ways to celebrate the anniversary.

I think we should try to think of fun, funny, unusual ideas, that match the spirit of the site.

I don't want ideas that have a flavor of "look how much we've accomplished" or "yay for us" -- I'm thinking more in the spirit of let's have some fun and celebrate the fact that we are still alive.

  • People should be able to collect "CodyCoins" for doing certain things on the Forum during those days (just normal forum things like posting, creating a new topic, creating coding snacks etc) and they could be redeemable against either some cool DC stuff from Cafepress or wherever...or redeemable against free license keys for Software (If we can get some to  be given away like that during that time).
  • There MUST be a big cool fun countdown timer visible everywhere on the website.
  • If it can be arranged, there should be a give-away a day for the 100 days.

One idea that I think would be neat is if we could find a way to get some of the old timers who have meant so much to the site over the years who haven't posted in years to at least come by and make one post and say hello.  I'm thinking of people like Nudone and Skrommel and the like.

Might be helpful to categorize ideas into two kinds, both of which would be suitable for our 10th anniversary:
  • Ideas that celebrate and are directed at existing DC members -- this would be more of an insider celebration.
  • Ideas that are meant to reach out to new people who are not part of DC.

100 days is too long to do anything.. exhausting just to think about it.
BUT, we could have a 30-day long celebration in March of 2015.

30 days is pretty 'normal' for a DC thing though...I mean, some of the fundraisers last 30 days...so it should at least be a bit bigger and a bit longer IMHO

Just beware the ides of same.  :)

The promotion thing is tough as it can trigger spam warnings.  About all I have been able to do on other forums is suggest Coding Snacks when someone is looking for a freeware likely not to exist.

As far as setting a celebratory mood how about temporarily changing the site logo to something splashy?  Maybe louder colors and funkier font?

Would an interview like thing work? Where have you been? What have you been up to?

Could be done off-site and posted... which would encourage a drop in by the subject  ;)

Limited series of 31, (March has 31 days), DC mugs.

Numbered, (x of 31), signed, and custom-designed by various graphically orientated people here at DC, (count me out  :D ), to be given away as the results of many/one competition(s) - the coveted number 1 being the big prize, (and possibly the biggest mug).

Woohoo!  I had an idea  ;D

March has 31 days yes, but this is a programing/software form ... So mug number 1 is - or should be - the second one. making for a limited run of (x86) 32.

I like the idea of a special 10th Anniversary Mug.

Perhaps it could feature a drawing of Cody with a long beard and walking with a cane, showing his age.  ;D

I guess I could sort that out in the form of a "Tech News" style post?

How about some cool features that DC could add/host:

  • E-Mail Provider
  • Website Hosting
  • Socialization (So things like Facebook Login, Social Media Sharing etc...would get a huge boost in people coming in from those sources)
  • Document Hosting (I guess something like Google Docs)
  • A new Homepage (It hasn't been updated in forever)
  • A complete selection of EVERY piece of Software ever created on/for DonationCoder (A lot of stuff is probably lost on page 382749832 of Coding Snacks lol)

I don't think it's appropriate to place any further impositions on DC (mouser) under the guise of a celebration, else we'll have to run fundraisers in January and February

How about contacting some of the sites that are sympathetic to DC (like Ghacks?).  Could be they'd like to contribute/participate...

I wasn't thinking about anything that would really cause mouser to be overwhelmed with work.  I was thinking something like an e-mail service which would be provided by another service provider and such...or things like third-party scripts (Although you do run the risk of it becoming abandonware, and also the risk of mouser modifying it so damn much it becomes impossible just to update it from source lol)

Better - a Ninite (https://ninite.com/) like software that will help you download or update software you mentioned so you don't have to search for it ... Far fetched, but it would be nice thing to have ...

Mail provider? More headaches that it's worth, we don't need it, and there are plenty of other places you can go if you need an email service.

Website hosting? The member server already serves that purpose, while also causing mouser enough headaches.

Socialization? Perhaps it would be better to wait for DoCo 2.0.

    Document hosting? Why?

A new homepage? Planned as part of Doco 2.0. ;)

An all inclusive software repository that will list every app ever made here, dragged up from the depths of the forum, aka a DoCo software repository? I offered to do that, and it would have been done already, but mouser rejected it, opting instead to make it part of DoCo 2.0.

Better - a Ninite (https://ninite.com/) like software that will help you download or update software you mentioned so you don't have to search for it ... Far fetched, but it would be nice thing to have ...

We already have DCUpdater, but it requires devs to at the very least create a text file and include it with their app (and host a copy) for it to work for updating, and giving a copy to mouser for inclusion with the Updater app, for installing from the "Available for Installation" tab.
