I thought we might try adding a new section of the forum specifically for discussion of non-Windows software (and hardware), so here it is!

I know we have lots of people on DC that love linux, embedded hardware like Raspberry Pi, mac, android and ios, and it's probably time we had a special section for such discussions.  It would also be a good place to discuss cross-platform software, and may also be a good place to discuss non-windows related hardware.

Don't be shy about posting here -- it may take a little while for this section to reach critical mass.

No need for any more +1s, the section has already been added and we're in it :)

I'm kind of hoping this forum section doesn't get hijacked by the tablet/phone crowd :(

Come on gothic, there's plenty of room for everyone.

Actually, as it stands now on most of the unmoderated internet, there isn't.
Postings related to popular technologies and platforms drive out the more obscure things (which is logical because they are popular).
The problem with this is that there is no place for people who are actually interested in these obscure things.
When anything is allowed, the "wisdom" of crowds governs, which in practice drives everything towards monoculture.

Agree. The gravity well generated by the appearance of the "most mediocre choice" rivals that of a black hole.  ;D

but dc hasn't typically been like that, has it?**

**edit/ or maybe that's the way you see the current software board - what with it being windows focused lol

May be that can be grounds for the creation of a non-tablet, non-phone, non-windows section ;)

This is great news! :D

I've been a DC lurker for years, but since I fully switched to Linux a couple years ago (plus a Mac just about a month ago), most software discussions and coding snacks here no longer apply to me. This new section will definitely change that.

(Interestingly my phone is a Lumia. Talk about diversity. :P)

I'm somewhat apprehensive, too, but perhaps for the opposite reason.  I'd love to see a separate forum section devoted to the "tablet/phone crowd," and a separate one for the Linux folks, and perhaps other separate ones as well.  Having one section devoted to tablets/phones/Linux/mac/etc. doesn't seem to me much of an advance over having no "others" section at all.   I should note, however, that I'm often very wrong in my predictions, and perhaps that will be the case here as well.  :)

I want a FreeBSD section.

Start making solid informational posts on a regular basis about BSD and maybe Mouser will give one.

(Ditto to everybody else who wants their own special sections. ;) 8))

Suggestion:

Since this is a potpourri section right now, how about if we prefix all threads with a tag in all caps?

Something like: ANDROID, BSD, FOSS, IOS, LINUX, MAC, MULTI (for multi-platform), SOLARIS, etc.

Example: LINUX: Remmina - superb remote access client

That should let people to quickly zero in on what interests them, and allow for easier searches down the road.

 :)

good idea 40hz.

if the section gets active enough we can consider splitting it up into multiple sections.

"Linux" and "minor Linux rip-offs"?

I'm still looking for a solid informational post about Linux here.

And I'm still hoping for some actual content - and a few less snarky comebacks - from some folks.

Guess we all have a dream... :-\
