I recommend anyone who wants to use it also install a free lossless codec that is optimized for screen recording:

Fair enough... have a feature request though:

- Possibility to add a title frame and set the time (seconds) for that frame.

Also, would it be possible to record to .gif like LICEcap does?

many things are possible.. right now my #1 goal is to fix some bugs with working with compression codecs and saving to non-avi containers.

New version up that fixes recording of compressed files -- it was completely borked in previous version.
(For now the compressing settings are still completely complicated and confusing -- I hope to fix this soon -- but at least they work now).

Try ASF9 recording mode files for really small files.

Encoding to webm seemed to work here (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) once the following instructions (DirectShow Filters) were followed:

Basically:

1. Run install_webmdshow.exe from webmdshow-*.zip obtained via:

  https://code.google.com/p/webm/downloads/list

2. Run opencodecs_*.exe obtained via:

  https://www.xiph.org/dshow/

3. Configure ESR as:

I have same settings as you but I used webm/google codec for the Video Codec Engine. Not sure if it has any effect at all.

I tried making a new recording after adjusting the Video Codec Engine to use WebM VP8 Encoder Filter. Preliminary examination of content with a hex editor seems to suggest the previous result and most recent one are using the same container, same video codec, and same audio codec.

Ok the very early alpha downloads are:

Note this is just an early alpha, it's going to be improving frequently and is not yet very useful or easy to use.

The biggest glaring weakness of the current version is that the compression settings are hard to configure and some do not work well, so it's hard to get it set up for recording good quality small files.

Easier and more foolproof configuration of format and compression options to yield small high quality files suitable for use or sharing.

Very awesome Mouser! I can already tell this is going to be my favorite recorder. The ability to easily switch b/t AVI and MP4 already puts it ahead of most of the competition....

Are you ready for bug reports--or is it too soon for that?
Also be aware that I'll have a flood of feature requests

RE: Name: You already have Screenshot Captor and Weblink Captor... Surely this is part of the "Captor" family!
I'm secretly hoping you'll someday make a full-on editor version. Hence I'm hoping that this will be a "Mini Captor" and the future-hoped-for version will be "Screencast Captor," sister of "Screenshot Captor."

I'm secretly hoping you'll someday make a full-on editor version.

The other possibility is that I could increasingly perfect this to be a tool that would work hand-in-glove with another editing tool that someone else writes. i could certainly add the recording of mouse movements and keyboard activity into a separate datafile for use by such an editor, and not record cursor in the screencast.

I think splitting the tools up in this way would make a lot of sense.

Now who wants to write a full-blown movie editor with annotations, callouts, cursor stuff, etc.?
