we used to write silly games on the trs-80; there definitely weren't many.
but there was an assembly-written defender clone that was sold that was amazing.  which i could remember the name of it.

I used to play Conan: Hall of Volta on the Apple IIe.  That was a great game for its time.

Also, I remember typing in the code for games for the Commodore Vic 20 and storing it on a cassette drive.  There was a game I spent hours, and hours typing in from a magazine that I ended up playing anytime I turned it on.   Just can't remember the name...

How about Coleco's  ADAM  ????  I spent 25 years in the Toy Industry.. it was BOG for about 9 months.

I beg to differ:

Check out all the ones with "TRS" in the listing. I didn't know there were so many for HALF these systems...

colecovisio game system was amazing - they had some of the most amazing controllers you could buy..
coleco adam was pretty cool for its time but i guess it came a time when it was overshadowed.

as good as NES and colecovision were, nothing can really steel the place in my heart for the atari2600, which had so many games it was enough to drive young children into seizures making their list at xmas:

If you like Atari 2600 check this out...

Also, inlcuded in the above Link is Mame32 - this lets you play all those old arcade games.  I probably have around 1500 games in my Mame32 collection right now...

Indeed, Mame is awesome. But when Mameworld.dk went down, I lost interest in digging for roms as the links almost always went to undesirable websites. The world of emulation is a big one... Look here:

And don't forget Mattel's  Intellivision.  They even spun it off into a separate company.

Yes Intellivision was amazing! Utopia was my favorite game.

I've considered recreating it in Flash.

as good as NES and colecovision were, nothing can really steel the place in my heart for the atari2600, which had so many games it was enough to drive young children into seizures making their list at xmas:

i had a couple of friends that used to share the cost of renting an atari 2600 with me over the weekends - we couldn't afford to buy such a luxury. we'd rent the games too. i remember 'river raid' seeming like the most advanced game i'd seen at the time. after that i remember arcade games being ported to the atari 2600 console but they always sufferred graphically.

today, i can proudly say that i own an original atari 2600 (a wood panel one with more switches than in the photo - you could select colour or black and white tv) with about 50 cartridges or so. i've not turned it on for a few years but i did used to spend hours playing 'frostbite' in a kind of zen like trance.

one thing i'd like to mention is that i often hear about how little Johnny is the best computer games player on the planet (usually according to little Johnny's parents) but i can confidently say that as i've aged my computer gaming abilities have improved no end.

i used to think most of the games i played on the atari 2600 were insanely difficult during my teenage years - now when i try these very same games i can play them for hours without a great deal of effort (i mean without losing a life within the game).

my point is that from the numerous times i've heard about all the little Johnnies with their new games consoles and how 'amazing' they are on them the truth is that they aren't at all - they are just better than their non gaming family.

okay, i'm kind of pathetic comparing myself against a kid but i think we should all be proud to be adult gamers and good ones at that.

(i just wanted to point it out as i find it fascinating how your own perception of yourself is often missleading and it often takes hindsight and a few years to pass to realise just how wrong you were.)

Had I known consoles were allowed in this discussion, I might have had a little longer list ;) I've always preferred console to computer gaming.  Metroid, Legend of Zelda, the uber-hyped Mario Bros 3 -- and all the sequels still following . . .

I never got to play on a 2600, with the exception of once or twice at a friends house--which usually amounted to watching my friends' big brother play it.  He wasn't big on sharing.  I barely got to jump on the NES wave -- my parents weren't entirely sold on the whole video game thing.  Fortunately, grandma and grandpa were aiming to please.

My parents, who never did admit to understanding my being drawn to games, sat up late at night playing Super Mario Bros. -- I think they made it to world 4 or 5 once, which they didn't have the heart to tell me until they were certain I'd done it myself ;)

We played the Atari 2600 until our fingers bled.  I played Adventure for hours on end.  Found the magic dot, took it to the hall under the gold castle and entered the "secret" room.

Asteroids was hard to play using the joystick.  So we took a couple of old joysticks (cause the wore out fast) and made a couple of little button consoles laid out like the asteroids machine.  Radio shack was cool then. :)

Several years later I bought a used Major Havock machine from the local arcade.  Now THAT was cool.  Played that for a long time too.

elite on a BBC B by Ian Bell & David Braben.
It was a fantastic open-ended space trading sim with wire-frame graphics. My first experience with computers for recreation. It changed my life!  :-[

This is the first PC game I can recall playing:
http://en.wikipedia...._Cauldron_%28game%29

I was hooked on PCs after that & all things Sierra.
King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory/Hero's Quest, LSL.
Man I really miss those games.  There are so many other non sierra games but it would take me way too long to name all the ones I was fond of. (Mean Streets, EOTB, Battlechess to name a few)

There was a slideshow graphics adventrue game we played on the Apple ][+   I don't remeber the name of it, but  I do know that after you finally got the ruby slippers, you had to SAY WOOSH

There was another we played for a while called Swashbuckler.  You used the keyboard to swordfight computer opponents.  We kept trying to play it duing school but the teacher always busted us when he heard the noise it made.  So one of my classmastes wrote an assembler program to kill the sound.  :D

Ahh... the Apple ][ days....

Forgot about that game.  I loved that game.  I thought the graphics were amazing at that time...

Today I turned 15, but I LOVE old games. My favourites (in no particular order) are:

Leisure Suit Larry I (EGA/VGA both nice)
Jazz Jackrabbit
Wolfenstein 3D
Sam'n'Max Hit the Road
Day of the Tentacle
Conquest.com (? really old but runs on my XT)
and more...
