lol, I guess for really large amounts of data, sure, that might work. But I wouldn't stop using email and the internet for small things. You could send a simple email and it would get there faster than a bird, at least as long as the email provider doesn't have a fubar server.

I use email because I think it is useful. It does not HAVE to be useful at all, it's enough for me to think it is. And sometimes I am simply following a habit.

I do prefer IRC though. Still IM, email, phone have their purpose (at least from my point of view), have their usefulness.

IT experts at a firm in South Africa said it takes up to six hours to transfer four gigabytes of encrypted data between two of its offices which lie 50 miles apart.
I don't think that is so crazy.  It's not that different here.  I mean, sure, it's faster, but 4GB is a lot!  It's not easy to send 4GB to someone over the internet and expect them to receive it in less than an hour or much longer.  Unless you have some kind of special connection set up, this is not easy to do.  If you use you're normal ISP service, this would take forever.  Big deal.  I don't see what this has to do with email.  Email is awesome.  It is far superior to letters and faxes minus any kind of complex sociological implications.

This kind of question is really tired IMHO. Come up with something better or more appropriate, and we'll start using it plzkthxbye.

The real reason they are using this method is the message carrier will work for peanuts.

And hopefully wont get any arsenic pop-corn: anyone else remember that Don Martin Cartoon (from MAD)? I've searched, but can't find an image  :(

Not at all: they are identical. Post dates are one day apart and Winston is the same bird in both.

The trial was over a month ago: I wonder if it failed -- I have not heard any more about this??

Because it is a common standard and there are still lots of things that can milked about it:

It's been a long time since I heard that name.  Seems I remember buying books "Don Martin Steps Out" and "Don Martin Bounces Back" or something like that when I was a kid.  Did you ever see the "Russian Roulette" one where the last guy in line shoots through the heads of the previous five?  They thought they had a "lock" on that game.  I remember that one for some reason.

Is that what that's for?  I have an account... and still haven't been able to figure out much use for it...

Did you watch the 80 minute video on it? Or even the 8 minute video on it?

It's basically e-mail, IM, IRC, a wiki, and Microsoft OneNote all rolled into one, with even more features than what I've mentioned. Or at least that's what it's going to be as it progresses. I agree with you that without other people I know in there with me, it seems pretty barren.

Just look at the other articles in the left sidebar to get an idea about what The Mail Online sees as "...all the news that's fit to print..."   :P

I watched it.  It was amusing... but I just couldn't see the real use for it- perhaps as you said, it's because of the lack of people using it that I know... and a reason to actually use it.  You don't just need people... you need a project.  And a project that isn't bound by standard corporate sensitivity issues...

I agree with you. Unless you have a purpose to use it, it's fun to play with for a while but ultimately you're left scratching your head wondering how it would benefit you right now. But I also see it another way.

When the laser was first invented, nobody knew what to use it for. It was the answer, but nobody knew the question. These days lasers are so widely used it's hard to imagine what the world would be like without them.

I think the Wave will eventually take off once people start wrapping their minds around the possibilities it enables. Not everyone can see it right now. Myself included. I'm one of those kinds of people who often has a hard time imagining new things, but once an idea is expressed to me it's like the floodgates open and ideas/possibilities start to pour in.

Give it some time. It's going to be huge. But for right now it's not even in beta yet. It's in preview.

Sometimes we use it just because of the lack of communication. Why not make a call?

I didn't mean to hijack this thread and turn it into a Google Wave thread. DC already has two threads dedicated to Wave.

I'll PM you my details and then I'll shut up about Wave in this thread. :)

I don't think that is so crazy.

I think the point is that sometimes we use the internet when other methods would be faster.

In the above example ...
1 copy the 4GB onto a USB drive = 1 hour (my PC can do that)
2 drive 50 miles at 50mph = 1 hour
3 drive back = 1 hour
total time taken 3 hours ... or 1/2 that of the existing method

Hmmm...

My guess is that if you tried the carrier pigeon approach in the USA you'd go to prison because:

1) Carrier pigeons aren't Sarbanes-Oxley compliant.
2) Flying without FAA approval, or SEC approval, or... ???
3) You're a terrorist

Not really sure whether you'd go to prison for #1 or #2, but even if you're not caught for that, there's always #3 as a "catch-all". ;)

Wonder if the experiment worked out without iron bracelets. :)
