Overlay Folder Icon with Exe icon
« on: January 21, 2009, 04:52 PM »
There are a slew of programs out there that will let you customize your explorer folder icons. But I can't find any program that will easily let me create the icon that I want.  What I want is program that will let me select a folder icon and then select an icon from an exe and overlay the exe icon on the folder icon.

Try Icon any Folder I think it will do exactly what you want

You would have to go to an icon editor and process your own icon to do that I haven't come across anything like you want .

I haven't seen anything like it either.  And since I haven't an artistic bone in my body, I was hoping someone would be able write a program that would take icon A shrink it by X%, place it on top of icon B and create icon C.

Maybe Shedko Badges will help you? It does not answer "icons combine" question but helps customize folders icons.

It's not really what I am looking for, although it is a step in the right direction.  It looks like an interesting progam though. :)

Some of the other programs on their site look interesting as well.

I sent the developer of Badges my idea. Hopefully they will be able/willing to enhance the program.  They have an ASCII captcha, which I though was hilarious:

;D Try Nicefolders. Its Icon editing is not brilliant but it is good enough? Not been updated for a while though.

iiuyc you are just trying to take an image of a folder and superimpose the image from an exe file's icon in the center and convert it to an icon? Seems like it should be fairly simple with Photofiltre and GreenFish Icon Editor.  Both freeware.

You can search tutorials for Photofiltre but basically you want to load the folder image, then open the exe file's icon image.  Do a "copy" on the exe file's icon, do a "select all" on the folder image, then "insert in" to insert the icon into the folder.  Insert in automatically centers.  If the size isn't right you'd have to resize the selection with commands in the selection menu.  After saving that to a jpg or png file you open it in Greenfish and convert it to icon.

try Icon Explorer

http://www.mitec.cz/iconex.html

you can extract any .exe icon to a folder or desktop
then right click the folder you want to changr the icon
click properties - customize tab - change icon
navigate to where the extracted icon is and select it
click apply and ok

Hmmmmmmm I got the impression the OP wanted to have a program's icon in the center of a folder icon, not just substituted.  Maybe I got the wrong idea?
btw I downloaded IconExplorer just in case it's cool. :)

I'm not sure. I've seen a few folders where there's a circular logo in the center so I thought of that.  Hope the OP replies just out of curiosity.  In any case that tool looks good to have in the box. :)

So I guess I assumed the wrong thing? You weren't looking to superimpose an image on top of a folder?  I'm just curious is all. :)

you are welcome peteryy,

Interesting that this came up on my feeds this morning
although I can't figure out how to get to work.

It seems to still be in development or something about look for the next release.

http://www.nirmaltv....ge-with-fast-folder/

I messed with it till i got tired of no results.
Perhaps someone else can figure it out and post an easy explanation.

It's supposed to put a pic of your choice on the folder type icon by way of dropping a folder of pics onto the program, it generates thumbnails and then you can pick the picture you want on the folder icon. I got that far, but after choosing a pic it showed an error.

I couldn't get it to work right, or my computer couldn't, perhaps not powerful enough.
On my computer it showed an error and I had to close it.

I'm going to keep an eye on this one and watch for further developments.

I tried NiceFolders and once I figured out how to use it (despite what the web page says, it is not intuitive) it did exactly what I wanted.  :)

Ah, it does use layering techniques. I was just wondering if that's what you were talking about.

Yeah, but you're not supposed to admit that if you ever hope to get into management.  ;)

Ohh, well done me!!!  :D Thanks. It's always good to hear a poster who tells others when a solution is found to their satisfaction; it's so rare! That means that other post readers can get straight to the solution with less guesswork.
