I am the proud owner of:

Toshiba Tecra 8200
Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) 750 MHz
256 MB RAM
Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/XP
USB1.1

This is a very very very old laptop. However, it still works and allows me to browser the internets, chat, write email and watch most anime. Lately this h.264 codec has become increasingly popular and my system is not powerful enough to handle those, so I am looking for a replacement. I already found one and will give it to myself as a birthday present :)

Oh yeah, of course I run linux on this old machine.

Is "Mincrosoft" a stripped down version of the "real thing"?  :D

Where to start

PC 1: Old Dell GX150 Pentium III 1GHz, integrated gfx, sound, 512MB SDRAM, 160GB IDE - now a testbed, OS is whatever I happen to be experimenting with, it's original function was replaced by PC 2.

PC 2: VIA EPIA SP8000EG, VIA 800MHz CPU, integrated everything, XP Pro SP3, 1GB DDR, 120GB Samsung HDD, LiteOn Slimline all in a SNT AR600 case - sub 30W PC always on and downloading.

PC 3: Acer Travelmate 2201LCi laptop, now with Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 764MB DDR, 80GB HDD, Radeon 9000 IGP, XP Home SP2 - odd job and world travelling laptop.

PC 4: Athlon 1600+ on a AsRock K7S41GX, integrated video/audio, 512MB DDR, 80GB HDD, XP Pro SP2 - wife's PC - touching of the PC is strictly forbidden while there's nothing wrong with it  :P

PC 5: AMD 5000+ X2, Gigabyte MA78G-DS3H, 4GB DDR2, ~2.2TB of HDD, nVidia 7600GT, XP Pro SP3 - general work/play horse, currently waiting for Radeon 4850 and AMD 95W Phenom 9750 to drop in price.

And hiding in the closet is my Amiga 3000 with CyberStorm PPC180, 132MB RAM, 2.8GB HDD, A2065, Picasso IV with all addons, AmigaOS 3.9.

I can "improve" with my HP Omnibook 6000 which has:
Intel Pentium III 500 MHz
14" (4:3) screen
128 MB RAM
CD player
56K modem/100Mbit Networkcard
1(!) USB1.1 port

But it is still going as strong as it did 8 years ago. I love that thing and Windows 2000 runs very nice on it.

you know what would be useful is a free program to generate these kind of hardware description list as output.
then people could all use the same program to paste.

HWiNFO32[/url] - freeware system information tool for Windows. Lets you create hardware reports in various formats and select the components you want in the report.
looks good but like most of those progs exports something about 30 pages long ...

here's mine edited from another thread:
CPU:   Intel core 2 duo e4400 tray 2048kb, lga775, 64bit
Mobo:   Msi p35 neo-f, intel p35, atx
CPU fan:   Arctic freezer 7 pro sockel 775
Memory:   2048Mb-kit ddr2 mdt , pc6400/800, cl5
Box:   Coolermaster centurion5  Cac-t05-uw no PSU
PSU:   Corsair vx450w
Graphic card:   ASUS GF-7100GS Silent, 128MB, Nvidia 7100GS, PCIe
Harddrives:   Two x Samsung hd321kj 320gb serial ata-ii, 7200 upm, 16mb
DVD burner:   Samsung sh-s183l
+ Windows XP Home SP2

I'm very happy with it
was custom built by an online shop here.
cant recommend the box from a noise point of view - one fan cant be replaced by a larger one so it cant be made a whole lot quieter
The cd drive is fine, but very slow to read discs initially - I still have a Plextor 716a burner in an older machine that I meant to add to this one but I'm just not that kind of guy really - I'll take it apart only when I really have to ...

HWINFO needs a "brief" report type!
Actually this might be a nice little "coding snack" type program - to make a regex script to remove all but some key lines.

hey, so long as it works, its all good, some of these computers I drool over, some I laugh at, but so long as you can do what you need to do and have a little fun as well is all that matters!

That's a key attribute...

Fortunately, I don't need to do that. My dog handles the keyboard drooling round here.

Bad joke but...
If it stinks, clean out (all) the bugs from it...or wait until they are fossilized (when you have some kind of attachment to the bugs)  :D
