wraith, I posted this as MY annoyance; why are you soo annoyed by my annoyance that you find it necessary to post your own annoyance with my annoyance here in the Annoyance thread?  (Let's see someone diagram THAT sentence!)

I don’t see other folks counter-posting against other members' annoyances! This is my own personal, petty, seething annoyance! Let it be already!!   :P :P

I'm going to trump you both, I'm annoyed by InstallSheild *and* by company-name-in-start-menu/app-install-location-folder. Simultaneously! Even though I (now) know that this is due to a default option in Installshield (which only increases my annoyance with it, but I assure you I was annoyed with it prior :D).

So there! ;)

Ok... my annoyance is with annoyances that are others annoyances that are not aimed at the root of the annoyance but actually another source that gets away with creating annoyances that no one really knows are they annoyance creator.

There! :P :P

(Really, I have the same annoyance, which causes me to re-arrange my program files to get around it or choose to change the default install directory.  And on that note- I'm also annoyed with people installing to the start menu in the same way!  And *both* are the root of installshield being the default windows installer!)

My pet annoyance: People who jump to a conclusion about why someone or something is the way they/it are, and then they proceed to go and judge or get annoyed over that reasoning even though it never existed outside of their own minds.

[edit] And my pet annoyance 2: Everyone suffering from Morton’s Demon.

Just give them a copy of this article and call them in the morning:

Cognitive Biases - A Visual Study Guide by the Royal Society of Account Planning

Link: http://www.scribd.co...of-Account-Planning#

With thanks to Lifehacker.com for the find.

Link: http://lifehacker.co...skyline=true&s=i

You make decisions every day based on false assumptions about other people, immediate pay-offs, your memory versus imagination, and familiarity versus fondness, just to name a few. Want to learn more about your mind's crazy decision engine? This illustrated guide can help.

This multi-page illustrated treatise on cognitive biases, hosted at Scribd and embedded below, does a fantastic job of translating the stuff of college textbooks and all-too-brief Wikipedia explanations into lunch break reading. Digging through it might make you afraid of how your mind works, or send you on a journey to think a bit more about how you arrive at what you decide.

Thanks 40hz, excellent reading. And of course it kinda makes me realize how guilty I am of those things myself. Though I'm sure I don't really consider myself half as guilty of them as I actually am :D

When potentially interesting articles get pulled because somebody "expresses concern".
re: the above-referenced article.
Hello Everyone,
A big thank you for all the interest in this study guide. It was
originally created as a fun introduction that took the Cognitive
Bias wiki and tried to make it easier to memorize.
However, the authors of the wiki article have expressed some
concern over the accuracy of certain entries. The document is
being taken down for the time being until that can be
corrected. Thank you for your interest.
Sincere apologies for any troubles this caused!

Not sure if it's been said in this thread, but I'm sure it warrants repeating anyways...  ;)

I "bolded" the line in your quote that says the authors of the wiki article themselves are the ones responsible for it being pulled. That's a little different than someone else having it pulled. Unless I misunderstood that paragraph.

Thanks!

@J-Mac:
The guy who put the publication up on scribd was attempting to distill the important parts of an entire wiki, I say he gets an 'A' for effort at least.
Apparently he got some stuff wrong (or possibly, slightly incorrect) and the wiki community got after him.

My beef is, I would really like to read the article, discrepancies or no.
I would have been content with a bold header in the document warning of potential bugaboos, but to have the document taken down entirely?
:nono2:

Really, this is a minor annoyance and it IS his right to publish or not publish as his conscience and reason dictate, but put together with all the similar annoyances (nonsensical 404 errors, AOL Hometown and Geocities pages cited in links, etc.) it just grates on the nerves.

One of my chief annoyances is when a family member "borrows" something of mine (without asking first) and then doesn't return it!  Grr...

Programs that HAVE an installer, but don't include an uninstaller.  And, by extension, programs whose uninstallers don't completely uninstall all of the app's files.

Traffic lights in the United States.

With all the technology we have, why are these things still being manufactured with such an antiquated electrical design? Most of them can't even automatically reset themselves following a power failure. Talk about a joke. >:(

Yes, not happy with either of these.  If practical, much prefer apps which require no installation steps apart from extraction, and correspondingly can be uninstalled with a simple folder deletion.

This is in case you "accidentally" uninstall their software.
In such cases, you would certainly immediately re-install and find to your relief that all your settings, appearances, files, etc. are still available to the "new" install...

"Should I install the developer preview of that OS?"
 or
"How do I install the developer preview of that OS?"

If you to ask, the answer is a resounding f*** no. If your hands can reach the keyboard, you're sitting too close.

Traffic lights in the United States.

With all the technology we have, why are these things still being manufactured with such an antiquated electrical design? Most of them can't even automatically reset themselves following a power failure. Talk about a joke. >:(

Update:

In my small portion of the US... we now have LED red and green.  Yellow is still incandescent and not cost-effective to switch.
All are computer controlled as well.  Following a power outage, the yellow or red blink until reset, mostly by computer.
This blinking isn't great and sometimes it goes on for a spell.  But it's way safer than having nothing.
Also... it somewhat keeps the stop or go decision away from the motorists.   :P
And... I'm seeing more and more crosswalk timers.  I think the concept is to let pedestrians know how long they have before being run over.  ;D
These can be seen from your vehicle and it's nice to know when to speed up or slow down.  Saves time or brakes.  IMO great idea.

--------------------

My beef-
Time of day sequencing.
Say you have three traffic lights close enough together to see all 3 any time of day.
At 5:00 a.m. all are green... zoom right through.  :)
At 5:01 a.m. #1 turns red and you stop to let zero (0) traffic go through.  Lights 2 and 3 are still green.  As your #1 light turns green, #2 light turns yellow then red to let more nothing through.  Same with #3.  >:(

Even if these lights were only 200 feet (61 meters) apart and you accelerated like Mario Andretti... you'd still catch one of 'em.

BTW  Fort Lauderdale PD has a ticket called *Improper Start* and they gave me my very own copy a while back.  ;D

Kit-Kat commercials on TV.

I don't know why they think the sound of somebody loudly chewing their product makes you want to buy it. Or that biting into a candy bar can induce an orgasm - as the expressions on the ad actor's faces (especially the women's) seem to imply.
