Miranda discussion started in https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1188.0

Trying Miranda - your link doesn't work by the way (either page doesn't display or I am told connection was refused).

It is certainly minimalistic - perhaps a bit too much for me, but it is nice to have different networks in one interface.
Strange, page opens here without a problem...

Minimalistic? Yes, on default... but if you like, you can blow it up to look more or less like the original MSN/ICQ/Yahoo or even way better! That's another thing I like about Miranda :) The folks in #miranda on irc.freenode.net are mostly friendly and the forums are nice too.

Some examples of what is possible:

Interested? Then check out http://bluescreenofdeath.co.uk/Miranda/ for a quick-start guide, http://www.miranda-im.org/ is the main site.

It sure isn't suitable for people who got their first PC a few days ago, but it's perfect if you love many options and even more plugins to choose from!

Miranda rocks! Miranda rocks!

Thanks, I'll carry on playing ...

The link now works - must have been a site glitch

i actually like miranda's minimalistic default interface (though nice screenshots!)

as brotherS says, feel free to test it out by joining us in the official irc #donationcoder channel on efnet irc.

Miranda is great. I don't use it at home but I keep it on my USB Drive along with portable Firefox and Thunderbird. Great for when I'm out of town...just pop my jump drive into any computer and I'm connected to my contacts instantly. Lot's of great plugins too.

Never, ever would I use this in place of mIRC though...no way!

Well, if you want/need to use lots of scripts you really MAY want to use mIRC.

If you want all the really important basic stuff and a few scripts plus a really nice, very customizable GUI you'll want Miranda (I do).

i'd put it differently.

if you use and love irc, you most likely want a dedicated irc client.  mirc is a great one.
(see the donationcoder.com encryption addon for mirc here: https://www.donation...cryption/index.shtml)
(see the donationcoder.com mirc script pack here: https://www.donation...r/mircpak/index.html)

But if you ever want to talk to others occasionally who ask you "do you have such-and-stuff instant messenger", then a nice multi-protocol free lightweight messenger tool like miranda is a good solution

Well, I love and use IRC a lot (on 4 servers) and Miranda does a great job there 24/7 :) Miranda IRC has vastly improved over the years, the latest version with tabbed interface and stuff is great! And, unlike mIRC, it's free.

...and 0.4.0.2 STILL has issues with the MSN protocol, and STILL sometimes gets caught in an infinite loop when you close it (leaving the process running which you then manually have to kill).

*sigh*.

Yeah well, MSN is bugged. Bleh. I'd prefer using miranda for icq+msn and get rid of msn messenger, but mirandas msn protocol support is just too buged. Bleh.

I have been using Trillian ever since its creation and was very satisfied with it because it's very simple and gets the job done.  I have tried Miranda a couple of times back in the days but was always turned off by its random crashes and its MILLONS different configuration settings (probably more settings than ms office!!!).

However, during a casual chat with brotherS, he mentioned a new release just came out and asked me give it another shot.  I did just that and patiently went through the 218379821798123 configuration options.  Now I finally realize how much more powerful and flexible Miranda is compared to Trillian.  The latest build is very stable.

Anyway, for those of you who were afraid of Miranda's infinite configurability, don't be.  It's totally worth your time.  Give it a shot.  I love it.  If you see me coming in and out of IRC like a madman, it's most likely I am hard at work configuring my Miranda :)

A big thank you to brotherS for convincing me to make the switch!!!!

Miranda is becoming popular in DC's IRC channel!  :)

If you want to step forward from using Trillian, there's even a Trillian message history importer: http://addons.mirand...viewfile&id=1929

hey brothers, I'm here at work trying out miranda, and I don't have time to figure out how to set the whole irc thing up.  If possible, could you give me a quick step by step instructions on how to get the dc channel up and running.  All I've done so far is install miranda.  I started to put stuff in the irc options, but i don't know the server names and stuff.  On mirc, i would just pick a random server and connect.  Please help!

Thanks.

I think you just need to read http://bluescreenofdeath.co.uk/Miranda/ - that has the link to the server-list (that you don't seem to have installed yet) and other hints for setting Miranda up for IRC.

If that doesn't help, scream for more help! :D

OK, i got the irc server list.  But I still can't connect, I keep clicking online, and nothing happens.  And how do I stop the icq message from coming up every time I start miranda, saying I don't have it configured.  I'm only using this for irc.

If you're only using the irc network, it makes sense to disable all other network plugins. Goto options-> plugins and disable msn, icq, jabbler, etc ;)

Thanks, I disabled all of those.

I'm behind a proxy here, I wonder if that's why I can't connect...

In options>network, there is the proxy configuration. I don't have a proxy, so i can't test it, though.

yeah, you know, I don't think I have access to do this from work.  I think they've blocked off any kind of chatting.

superboyac: if you're behind a corporate/school firewall, you're out of luck... :o
read this for info on using a web-based im client that is less likely to be blocked.

If you are working for a big employer there's a chance they are not only trying to block it but also recording every single key stroke for profiling purposes - in that case you only should use Miranda at home.

I updated the screenshots in my first post, many of the old ones became offline. I still love using Miranda every day! If you didn't tried it before, use it to visit DC's IRC channel!
