Screenshot Captor / Re: No Preview
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2014, 02:15 PM »
I suppose it might be considered a bug that you don't see a preview of the file you are about to save -- but then why would you need to?

The real value of the preview window is when you are saving into a directory of other files, selecting the other files gives you previews of them.

Not all that useful either way I suppose.

Living Room / Make your treadmill an entertainment center for almost nothing
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2014, 06:11 AM »
Just wanted to report on a recent cheap solution to making my treadmill more entertaining.

I bought the cheapest android tablet I could find that had hdmi output, a used Hisense Sero 7 Lt), on ebay, for $40 including shipping, and a super cheap small flat screen tv.

The tablet sits on the treadmill book stand and the tv mounts to the wall behind the treadmill (under $100 used).

I can watch youtube, read the news, read comics, even browse the web.

Note1: This tablet gets bad reviews but has been working flawlessly for me and the price cannot be beat; if you have more advanced needs you might want to get a better tablet.

Note2: You will also need a mini or micro hdmi cable, and you may want to pick up a (usb) extension cord for the tablet power supply.

Note3: If your treadmill is loud, you may need to pay special attention to getting a tv with good volume (or use a soundbar).

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013: Carbon - website / blogging framework [alpha]
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2014, 05:23 AM »
Do you prefer writing blog posts and content locally (with carbon picking up changes and seamlessly publishing the webpages) or via the browser like WordPress does?

Personally I wouldn't mind either way, but if you think there's ever any chance that someone else might also be blogging on your site, the local approach becomes a problem.

Ok I have duplicated the setup exactly, and i can't reproduce the problem.

So let me take a guess about what could be causing it on your machine.

The way that a capture selection operation works is that it essentially STARTS out by capturing the entire workspace (all monitors) and then overlays that over the workspace (all monitors) using a window with no borders or titlebar.

Now I'm guessing that maybe what's happening is that you have a program running in the background that is designed to move any windows that it *thinks* are "off-screen" back on screen.

Such a program could be *mistakenly* thinking that SC's capture selection overly window is "off screen" since in your unusual monitor setup, the upper left corner of the window is indeed out of view.

Might this be possible?  Can you check to see if you might be running such a tool?

Initially I worried that it might be a built-in feature of windows 7, but having tested this out now in an identical setup it seems not, so it would seem to have to be a third party tool.

Nice list, I have blogged it.

I'm just shocked at the idea that so many of the visitors to any site are using adblockers.

I think there are a lot of interesting things in the post (not sure about comments).

However I have to say that I'm extremely surprised at the idea that adblockers could have such a dramatic impact on income.  This goes against everything I understand about advertising volumes and the percentage of people aggressively blocking ads with adblockers.  Could it really be the case that such a high percentage of visitors are using ad blockers?

They say:
Over 60% of you are using some sort of adblock program

Can that really be true? It doesn't mesh with my gut impression of how many people are using adblockers -- in fact if i had to guess i would be guessing somewhere in the 1% range..

Is it possible that they are THINKING that 60% of visitors are using adblockers, but what they are really seeing is that 59% of their traffic is coming from bots or other automated services that don't load ads?  Or am I grossly wrong about the percentage of users running ad blockers.

Portable version unpacked into its own directory works great.

ok so that's a big clue.

if i had to guess, i'd say the problem is that when you tried a reinstall you thought you deleted the old settings but they are still there.

one time there was an issue with a corrupt file in the PresetFormats directory.  this problem can also happen if you copied files from one machine to another?

So here is my suggestion:

Exit CHS.

Delete the Program Files\Clipboard Help and Spell directory, AND delete the mydocuments ClipboardHelpAndSpell directory.  You need to delete both.

Then reinstall CHS as normal.

If you have clip data you want to preserve, copy that someplace first.
8238
I apologize, that sounds frustrating.

What operating system?

Can you try downloading the latest portable version and unpacking it to a directory that can be written to, and see if that portable version works.  If so, then we know it has something to do with your previous settings.

Hi Sander.

I have tested SC on windows 8 and it works fine.

From your description the problem seems to be that it's trying and failing to save to the documents folder.
Your solution attempts appear to be exactly what you should be doing so i suspect it's just something minor there.

Let me see if i can help a bit:

It is the ConfigDir.ini file in the Screenshot Captor program files directory that you want to edit.
Is it possible you werent removing the // at the start of the line in that file?  That // makes it a comment so you need to remove that.

On Windows 8 it should by default be trying to use the APPDATA directory, so that must be set to the network drive?

Can you try setting the value in ConfigDir.in to point to a NON-NETWORK drive, some directory that SC is allowed to write to?

I'd appreciate an option presented during install on where to save the config files <-- not a bad idea; another option should be that on startup if it fails to write its configuration files it should advise what to do.  I'll put that on my todo list.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Slow
« Last post by mouser on January 12, 2014, 11:58 AM »
There is no advantage to keeping them in the New section, but really 600 items in New should not be slowing it down.

Truthfully neither should 6000.

But if we accept that the slowdown in your cases is being caused by so many clips in the New group, what we need to next determine is WHY.

There are a few possibilities.

  • The first is that simply having so many clips in the database is causing the database to update slowly.
  • The second is that CHS is doing some operation each time a new clip is added to the NEW group, like filtering, or invisibly updating some display that is involving sorting or searching, and that this action is being performed each time a new clip is added.  This would be a bug that we might reveal by changing the view on the main window in different ways and trying to see if the bug remains in all cases.
  • The third possibility is that an antivirus program of some sort is being an ass, and is holding up the program while it scans the clip database file as it increases in size or content.

Determining which of these causes is the key.  Any insight you can find would be appreciated.  What I can do is create a test function to create tons of clips in the New group automatically and see what i can see.

On the "Backup/Maintenance" tab, tick all of those checkboxes under Automatic Filing, then click the Now buttons in that "Automatic Filing" group to the far right of them, in order starting at the top.

Take a screenshot afterwards if you would so we can see.

Then go to the main window and click on the "New" group, and make a guestimate about how many items are in that New group (dozens, 100s? 1000s?).

Then restart CHS and see if the problem is fixed.

Living Room / Interesting funding discussion regarding JayIsGames.com

We've frequently posted links to casual flash game writeups on JayIsGames.com, and they have run some good flash game contests in the past.

They have started a discussion about funding issues that is quite interesting:

http://jayisgames.co...u.php#comment-panels

Last year, JayisGames.com celebrated its tenth anniversary. For a site that began as one person's personal blog to have turned into what it is today and survive that long, well... that's kind of amazing. But we're in trouble, because as adblockers become more and more common, it's getting harder and harder to make ends meet... and not take a loss. Please take the time to read this post about how we make our money, where it goes, why we have a problem, and why we want your help deciding what to do about it.

If it's true that a large New section slows down everything, then i can try to add something that automatically detects it and tries to encourage user to enable auto-filing.

dcwul62, can you check the size of your New group as well and see if you have disabled auto-filing?

It should be super fast and you shouldn't be able to copy fast enough (at least not manually) to make it miss stuff.

It's good that a clean install is super fast for you, now the question is whether there is something unusual about your database or just it's size...

Cliptable.* are the main database files.

If you bring up the main window can you check how big your Clipboard -> New group is? maybe try moving items from the New section elsewhere.

Also see if maybe it has to do with your current view? Do you have a filter enabled (top row), or are you in a virtual group?

Another vote for replace and don't trust your current erroring drive.

If the existing drive is a big one, you might buy yourself a cheap USB dock and you can use your current disc as an external backup.
