Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: What are Mouser plan for this tool?
« on: October 16, 2024, 02:50 PM »
I don't know (as I'm still on Windows 10) -- have there been problems with mouser's software on Windows 11 ?

2
Learned something there - thanks

3
The old version of the official website is offline, and the new version is very stuck on the machine
What do you mean by "the new version is very stuck on the machine" ?

Where can I find the plugin for the FileHamster 1.x era
If they're still selling the software with plugins, I dont think I can (legally) share plugins.
What I have is version 2 anyways ...

General Software Discussion / Re: List of taskbar toolbar software
« on: April 16, 2024, 11:13 AM »
from my own taskbar:

mouser's software from here on dc:
  • Clipboard Help & Spell
  • Screenshot Captor
  • FARR (Find & Run Robot) (launcher etc.)
Dopus file manager
Syncovery backup software

5
I'm not clear what you are looking for - if I remember correctly there were many plugins (?)

I may have some Filehamster downloads on an older HDD.
Let me know what exactly you want, and I can then have a look

6
Window's shortcuts often (always?) find the destination file even if it has been renamed - so long as it's still local (not external or network).

Have never heard of a backup programme that does this.

Syncovery's [...] sync preview [...] shows me thousands of folders where nothing has changed, so that I can't possibly see the ten files that actually have changed.
in case this puts anyone off the idea of Syncovery - the list can be easily filtered, including to just show changed files.

7
What I would say is that you need a clear purpose for using the system. I would suggest that purpose being to do with thinking and doing. With that it is very quick to see whether it is helping or not. But the purpose doesn't have to be academic and doesn't have to involve writing as an output.
And don't eschew longer notes, outside the zettelkasten but being linked into it.
Many thanks for your answers - and for expanding on the bigger picture

8
It's worth emphasising that a brief atomic note implies two conditions that have to be met, not just one
Do you list these conditions? Are you referring to the two bullet points, the second of which includes the quoted text?

Can you recommend a book or article explaining the system in more depth?

see tooltip in image - also see the blue icon to the right: is for 'fine-detail rotation'

I noticed that there's a standalone version of QuickSwitch (in AutoHotkey) under active development at https://github.com/gepruts/QuickSwitch It support not only File Explorer but also some third party editors. I haven't tried it but thought it might interest some here.
Windows 10 and Directory Opus here -- looking to change 'save as' dialogue to folder currently shown in Dopus.

it doesnt switch automatically (as promisied, after AltTab, to the desired folder in file manager), but does show a menu with the relevant folder path so I just click that and I'm good

Screenshot - 2024-01-29 , 16_45_17.png
(enabling the 'Auto switch' only causes the menu to disappear, but I'm happy with the path being shown)

Thanks very much, and sorry for the late reply. Do you happen to know whether Beyond Compare recognizes files and folders that have been moved or renamed?
have you found that out anywhere?

Their website isnt very informative, I was considering it myself, cause I often want to compare rather than synchronise folders -- but that aspect seems to be only fully available in the pro version which twice the price ...
https://www.scooters...ware.com/kb/editions
Folder Compare alignment overrides
Overrides how files are aligned in a Folder Compare session.  For example, you could compare your .gif files on one side with .png files of the same name on the other side.

General Software Discussion / Re: Undelete utilities - differences?

Yes, $79 is substantial, but I paid the price for not having had proper and up-to-date backup...

General Software Discussion / Re: Undelete utilities - differences?
« on: December 06, 2023, 04:48 AM »
A number of utilities claim to be able to undelete deleted files.  Some claim to retrieve data from formatted or even damaged media.

Apart from things like cost, speed and convenience, is there much difference between the various programs?  Are they all using much the same methods, with much the same results?

Anecdotal:
a couple of years back I had a HDD I couldn't access. Well, it wasn't completely dead -- some software recognised it as a drive -- but I couldn't access any of the content. Smaller recovery tools (Recuva etc.) were useless.

I did try some free recovery tools at the time (if I kept a record I cannot find it...). One of them was partially successful i.e. it started finding files, but after leaving it running for hours it still only had a handful of files. A few people, here and elsewhere, recommended GetDataBack so I went for it and it did the job, relatively quickly too.

I see it's still the same price ($79), last updated a year ago (my version from 2021 was 5.55, now at 5.61). Dont know if they do a trial. Best of luck, whatever route you take...

Background is that I often take screenshots of images which are exactly the same size (e.g. photos in a viewer), and want to crop these images in exactly the same way.

I select an area manually and then usually use one of the following:
  • the "Auto Adjust Selection to fit" option (it's great!)
  • the magnifier and hotkeys to adjust the size of the selection

If I then use "Reselect Last (manually adjusted) area" on the next screenshot, the actions (1) and (2) above are ignored. I then have to repeat these actions.
=> I would prefer the adjusted selection to be the re-selected area. [Or maybe this needs to be a new option :-[ e.g. repeat last adjusted selection]

Technically #1 is not manual selection, yet if I do it after a manual select, it means the manual selection was just a rough guide, with the auto being the finishing touches.
#2 to me is manually adjusting the selection.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Thumbnail panel not showing thumbnails
« on: November 03, 2023, 12:53 AM »
Hi, that is actually an Explorer panel. The problem apparently is with Explorer.
See this and following DC posts:

Hopefully that will sort it

So, does the date stay the same?
I'm pretty sure Syncovery will compare by date and ignore size.  Or maybe even ignore both (can't check ATM, I'm on my phone).

I have also tried Syncovery [...] the user interface is unfortunately off-putting, and many features of FreeFileSync are missing.
Yes, It can be overwhelming with all the options. What features are missing?

the Nord N30 5G.  It was an enhanced N10 5G basically.  It comes with a 50W charger instead of 33W.  8 GB Ram instead of 6 GB.  The same 128 GB storage and the same open spot in the Sim tray for a micro sdcard.  Plus the Qualcom processor is a bit better.  The screen refresh rate is 120 FPS instead of 90.
[...]
I think it is a good buy for $270 USD

Sounds very good to me

Some thoughts about lower-to-mid-range phones if anyone considering:

Considering the Pixel 6a which is very similar to my last, the Pixel 4a 5g.
[...]
I suspect I could get something similar even cheaper. Would be willing to pay more for a better camera though.

I couldnt find anything under €/$ 500 with a better camera, so ordered the 6a.
Its main con for me is only available with 128GB and no SD expansion.

The 7a has a better processor, better refresh rate, its camera has more megapixels -- but doesnt seem to make much better images (so not worth the extra €100 to me).

If you're not such a fussy beggar re the camera, there's probably lots of good options out there. One that looked very interesting to me was the Samsung A53. Didnt take eSIM though and I wasnt convinced enough to go order a new SIM card.

Living Room / Re: More good web comics you've discovered
« on: July 02, 2023, 05:14 PM »
Hey, it's been awhile...

Just wanted to stop by and say that the Seed webcomic is now wrapped up with a three-page epilogue, and man what a wild ride it was.  With AI being a hot topic these days with all its attending "what-if"s, it's a more relevant read than ever.

Thanks, am enjoying this

^ two and a bit years later:

Considering the Pixel 6a which is very similar to my last, the Pixel 4a 5g.

The 6a just about still available new here for €340.

I suspect I could get something similar even cheaper. Would be willing to pay more for a better camera though.

# I'm not a gamer, so don't really care much about the processor being high end
# I like the older pixel camera/ software combo -- I wouldn't want a worse camera at any rate
# I like the OLED screen
# also like that it's stock android

I'm not in touch with what's on offer these days -- if anyone suggests any alternatives I'd be happy 😁

The maps look nice. I'm working my way through that thread.

I have done a little work with maps -- little and in a very limited way. Either getting a vector map & adding info; or occasionally using a scanned map, adding info; even drawing maps from scratch (i.e. "tracing" to create vector image - very time-consuming). I would then 'finalise' the map, adding colour if planned, generally making sure it looks good.

Ironically I'm no expert on preparing for publication, as this work would go to someone else who would check it and basically add it to a book.

I'll continue reading that thread and if I think I can help I'll get back to you. Likewise, if you think I can help, let me know!

A couple of maps here if you scroll down:

Its a 'game' where the point is to navigate a badly designed UI as quickly and accurately as possible
I've felt like that very often over the years :D
