Can FARR search Chrome bookmarks?
« on: August 12, 2016, 12:58 PM »
From my search of the question, it appears FARR cannot search Chrome bookmarks.

If I want to bookmark a site while I'm in Chrome I currently;
- copy the bookmark in Chrome
- open IE and paste the link
- make the same bookmark in IE - - then FARR can search for it

Are there any easier ways or plugins for FARR to do this?

i wonder if there is an addon for chrome that will tell it to regularly export its bookmarks to a text file -- in that case farr would be able to search it..

Well, we know where they're saved.  So someone could write an extension to copy it elsewhere.  Or can you add that directory to the farr search directory?

well you could ask farr to search that directory, but i guess what i meant was to save them in a format that was text friendly for searching...
but if its standard json, i could update my farrfox addon to search them.

Right, even if I point farr to that directory it doesn't read them.  I don't know anything about json but if you can update farrfox to do chrome as well that would be great.

Another strategy is to have a background script that unpacks the Chrome Bookmark to temporary individual .url files at each reboot (or at some interval). They are then searchable by FARR, Everything and other tools.

My FFBookmarksUnpacker does that for Firefox bookmarks, http://nod5.dcmember...ookmarkunpacker.html   The method would be similar with Chrome but use jxon.ahk library https://github.com/c...gica/AutoHotkey-JSON to get the json data. I can give that a shot if someone will use it.

Old topic, but in 2016 I didn't care because I was using Firefox!   :D

Did this get any farther along? There is a file called Bookmarks which appears to be in JSON format here:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

OK, I have a workaround but I'm embarrassed to say how much time I spent trying to get it to work.

There are 2 parts of it

1. Periodically i need to manually export Chrome bookmarks to a file from the Chrome bookmarks manager (Ctrl-Shift-O).

2. Configure the FarrFox plugin so that Search Firefox Bookmarks is checked and the path to the exported bookmark file is listed under Custom bookmark file locations (without quotes).

It still shows the Firefox icon though. Even if I extract the Chrome icon from Chrome, as soon as I rename the file to Firefox.ico to try and fool the plugin, the icon changes to a Firefox icon in Windows Explorer! Just from a rename! And FarrFox still shows the Firefox icon. But I'll live with it, this is close enough.

EDIT: Well, I just tried it again and it shows the Chrome icon now. Weird.

Thanks for posting your solution!
As for icons -- Windows will cache icons and sometimes they go out of date until a restart or something.

@Dadydave, worked well with me.  Thanks for this.

However, @mouser, you suggested earlier to update the farrfox plugin to include a json file.
What about adding 'chrome' in the list of options and allow the file C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks to be used ?

This would be sooooo wonderful and would complete the list of supported browsers.

File looks like this :
