Looking for MP3 player with "speed up playback" option
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:29 AM »
Hello,

Maple JB for Android is rather good for what I need when not at home, now I'm looking for something for Windows. Does anyone know a good one? Freeware if possible, I don't need it frequently enough to justify a big purchase price.

Presets (i.e., "play at 1.6x speed") and an easy way to increase/decrease speed would be great. Maybe even an option to delete the file after listening. And if I could use it to launch a file (to be played) directly from Windows Explorer (like with mp3directcut)... now that would be perfect! 8)

I don't use players often enough to know the features.  But if the Android one does all you desire I would suggest trying to run it in Windows using Blue Stacks Android Emulator

One of the MPC family, eg. MPC-BE, MPC-HC, etc

Control + Up/Down (by default) to increase/decrease playback rate, rates are: 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 4.0

Not sure if they can be changed.

Found it (in MPC-BE), those steps are Auto mode, in Playback options you can set an alternative:

I gather that Audacity can help you to do that, and you can save the speeded-up audio as an MP3 file.

Thanks for your replies! I'll address them one by one:

> Blue Stacks Android Emulator

I installed it... took me way longer than I expected, and after I finally figured out how to load a MP3 file, the app crashed. It always crashes. :-/

Haha, damn! I totally forgot that I had used this until ~2007. I stopped having the need then and totally forgot about it.

That looks good (and it's only one program), will give it a try!

> Audacity

Ok, I'll keep that in mind if the rest fails.

Thanks for the warning.  I don't have any Android Apps but if I ever get an Android Notebook I won't install this on my Windows Lappy.

I like it (in general), but it only delivers a Mickey Mouse-effect when speeding up playback.  I'll keep it around as an alternative for VLC though.

Looks like I need to try PaceMaker again.

Installed both Winamp and PaceMaker, works like a charm!  I even found out that I had registered PaceMaker back in 2006 (it works without, but registration gives you enhanced options).  8)

Thanks to all of you!

KMPlayer could do that (and many other things) easily!
Shift + or
Shift -     to alter the speed.

Look for the last good versión. 2.9.4.1435 before became crapware with Pandora.

Cheers!

Thanks for the pointer! Two questions:

- does it work properly like PaceMaker, or does it sound like Mickey Mouse when speeding up playback of human voices?
- I read that you can optionally not install additional stuff (like Pandora) when installing. Is that not true for the latest version?

What about VLC?

That all depends how much you speed it up, but If you keep hitting Faster (fine), you'll come up with a speed that should suit your purposes, without it sounding too non-human.

I was able to speed up the MP3 of this song to about 2X, before David Draiman's voice started taking on a Drac-like quality, on long notes. (Enemy Mine reference).

Thanks for the pointer. I came to really like VLC, but only as a video player. For speeding up audio, I prefer a player with a better UI (showing the current speed, being able to quickly change it to back to 100% speed and speed it up to the previous speed again, ...).

Winamp had a built in option for that. It can be found when going to 'plugins' and select 'DSP Effect.'
As far as I know most versions include the 'Nullsoft Processing Studio' (or in anyway you can choose
to install it when installing winamp custom mode). The Lite versions might not include it- not sure about
that. Anyway, within the newly loaded plugin you can choose 'Load preset' to find a whole bunch of
ready-made effects, including a nifty pitching tool you can shift in realtime. Screenshot below gives
an better view  :)

Thanks for sharing. Too late for me, but I'll keep it in mind should my other solution stop working.  :)

You might be able to use Renegade's Drum and Guitar Trainer.  Not free, and geared more towards musicians, but it's really good at what it does.
