Planet-killer meteor video: holy snikes!
« on: July 06, 2006, 03:11 AM »
The Japanese have made an animation what would happen if Earth would be hit with a "planet-killer" meteor. Interesting, as long as it doesn't interrupt my internet connection.

That's not a planet killer if you ask me. The planet seemed very much alive after impact. Only them annoying little things that used to live on it weren't. It's like a planet-pest-control thing.

I must be getting used to Hollywood effects; the video looked pretty silly to me.

The asteroid looked to be about the size of the USA.  I really don't think I care to know the exact details of that type of collision; I'll just assume I'll be dead shortly after impact.

It would take a much smaller meteor to remove life on this planet.  Not only that, but a meteor that size would crack the Earth, intorduce a planetary wobble, and cause rings of debris aournd the planet.  The gravitational effects prior to strike would be devastating alone.

Some pretty cool animation in parts of that actually. It was a bit inconsistent with some parts looking rather hokey, but at the same time it's a really difficult thing to depict "realistically" - none of us have a frame of reference. ;)

Some scientists have been saying that, eventually the moon will drop on us.
 - or they used to anyways. It seems now they are saying it's moving away from earth. They never make up their mind, do they.

No, but at least scientists tend not to be insisting on something that clearly isn't so... most of the time. :D

All satellites slow down in their orbit (from tidal influences - which include small attractions to other planets, esp. Jupiter and Saturn, and the Sun) and so eventually gravity will take its toll and they will come down with a crash - don't wait on yer roof with a pair of binoculars though ;)
