Up and coming photosharing site
« on: June 19, 2006, 04:28 PM »
Yourep
http://www.yourep.com
Look out flickr! This site is run by one of the guys I've been yakking with on Gabbly. Yourep is in active development and a full API is currently in the works. He's a hard-working coder as well as a nice guy in need of some testers/users/feedback. No transfer limits and there's more coming down the pipe as more users get on. I've invited Flo (yourep.com dev) to check in and let us know more details.
Check it out...

Hi :D Thanks for the invitation (I'm the coder/admin from yourep)

so.. what is coming down the pipe besides the current server going down the drain?
This evening I finished up the most important part of the API (that I didnt make public yet). But you can expect the most important functions being done by the end of the week - if moving to the new server doesnt take up to much time.

A lot from the basic service is done already.. here list with the most important things:
after registering you can upload two ways:
 - either you pick a couple files one by one .. or
 - you pack a zip file with photos and upload that zip file (batch-upload)

what can you do with the images:
 - you can add a title and comment to them
 - add tags
 - add notes (by marking a part of the image) and define peope, objects
 - you can turn images 90, 180 or 270°
 - make pics public, private or viewable for friends only (only available before upload for now)
 - images will be saved in a couple different sizes
 - you can hotlink the sizes box, thumb, small

now whats up with those folders (you can find it under the link "folder browser)
 - you can create folders, rename and delete them
 - move images from one folder into another with a single click (using the click-action menu)
 - add images into galleries with a single click (click-action)

also in the folder browser you can find functions that are not added to other places for now:
 - code collector .. click on the images you want the BB or HTML-code for (for the owner only for now)
 - create galleries

galleries:
 - edit title
 - edit description
 - change order of images with two click .. pick the image to move, pick the image it should be moved after
 - ...

slideshows are partly done

you can search for tags, objects and people
 advances search is still missing

messaging center
 - write messages to other users

and much more.. perhaps check out the list here: http://www.yourep.com/nav/learn_more
also I post new things into the news section: http://www.yourep.com/nav/news

I think I could write an hour about the site and upcoming functions.. but simply check it out yourself

I hope I get some feedback :D

regards,
Florian

Welcome Florian ... looking like it is going to be very useful. I really like the way you can tag parts of an image with a label ... cool. The interface looks really simple and uncluttered too.

Have you got sponsors or anything?

I forget who it was - one of the social networking sites... I think it was flickr or something... Anyways, last I heard they were burning through a million dollars a month in bandwidth costs.

Another podcast that I listen to was burning through $35,000 a month or so in bandwidth. They have a large corporate sponsor for bandwidth.

If you've got a solid backend, you may be able to get a camera company onboard to help out there.

I mentioned this because I'm finding the site really slow. A 23k image took 3.5s to load.

Cheers!

He's got server load issues at the moment. That'll be cleared up soon (like in the next few minutes). Stay tuned!

thanks carol for the thumbs up ;)

renegade.. the site is slow because of load-issues (as edvard wrote)..
thats because of keepmyfile.com - but I'm currently having Steven from rack911 have a look at it.

About costs:
I'm planning on making money with that site.. not loose it
I will add one google-ad onto the most pages - ofcourse not annoying places etc..
hotlinking large images will not be allowed.. thumbs only.. and that gets us hits
I'm planning on offering pro accounts that pay their own bandwidth for hotlinking the large versions

basicaly we have a good bandwidth price.. 0.03€/GB
we make money on keepmyfile.com with a file limit of 20MB .. so you can calculate the profit of a site that hosts images only.

lets do a quick calculation there .. lets take flickr into the spotlight:
16 million users a day.. each about 10 impressions
lets say they would have one ad per page
--> 160 million impressions per day
lets say the sponsor pais about 0.35$ CPM
so thats 56000$ a day
lets say roughly every page and its images are about 0.5MB
--> that makes about 76TB transfer per day.. lets make that an even number: 100TB
and now lets say you have a crapy bandwidth price: 50$ per TB .. --> so thats about 5000$ a day..
hm.. now what shall we do with the other 51000$ :D
lets pay 5 overpaid admins for watching the servers.. each 8 hours per day.. they dont work too much ;)
and lets give them 30$/hour .. ok.. so thats 1200$
lets not forget the rack-space and server costs.. etc etc etc..
at the end you'll have atleast 30000$ left per day..

get my calculations ;)

i've actually posted here before about steven from rack911.com

he solved our very difficult email cpu server load problem, which the entire support team at our hosting service failed to improve.  it was really eye opening to me about the value of finding someone who has some substantial background knowledge.

he's a great guy and i would recommend him as well, 100%.

get my calculations ;)

Yep! And I like numbers like that. But 0.03 per GB? WOW! That's a really good rate.

Good luck with it!

about Steven.. he made our load drop from 300 down to 15 .. now if that isnt a change?

@renegade .. 0.03€/GB is a normal rate for anything above 10TB/month
everything depends on the amount of consumtion.. thats what your local supermarket lives of
they have to throw out lets say atleast 20-40% of the food (isnt that awfull?) .. but they still make money because they get a good price for the things they buy..

and I like those numbers too :D I just dont think that I will get that many users in the next months.. but I'm happy with 50-100k users a day.. and thats very realistic.. we get that amount of traffic on keepmyfile

wanted to let you guys know I added some more functions recently .. coding is slow atm because its start  of the summer vacation.. so I just had all my tests at university and now my girlfriend wants to see me a lot (not a bad thing  :-*)

* if I would have translated the text the site could be multi-lingual
* I added a loading indicator and edited most functions so it gets shown (gmail-style)
* adding an image to galleries is now easier.. there is a button above every image you own (when viewing it)
* some more stuff that I cant remember right now  :tellme:

lots of stuff is still missing but I think the site is already very usable

the next thing I'll finish is the track-back function

give it a try guys and tell me what you think  8)
