Alright all, without delay here is the newest screencast which covers the BASIC functionality of KeePass password safe. I plan to do another which will demonstrate its more advanced features, so if you've been using it, post here what you think should be included and I will be sure to hit on it. Thanks and enjoy

@jdd: The page mentions that you have to start keepass with commandline parameters. If you don't want to run it from the command line (who wants??), you can create a shortcut to keepass, and then, on its properties, add the command line flags to the "destiny" field.

@josh: great screencast!
All the important stuff is there, and thanks for sparing me the work of learning how to do the auto-type!

Since Passkeeper won't allow me to make any new entries any more, I figured I'd give this one a try. It' really nice!

And it's still small enough to fit on a floppy for when I go to my dad's house.

The idea that you can create categories for different types of accounts is great. I was able to put all my accounts and software serials all in the same program instead of having 2 separate copies of Passkeeper.

One thing I didn't notice was an automatic "save on quit" feature. Is there one?

Great review Josh.

Josh, is a comparison of KPS and Roboform still in the offing? I've been very happy with Roboform but would be curious to know how KPS compares.

Thanks!

I can do one, however, I feel that roboform is in an entirely different category compared to KeePass. Roboform is DESIGNED for filling forms, saving passwords is an ADDED feature. After I complete my cast of roboform, I will do one comparing keepass and roboform, as well as a mini-review to go with it.

KeePass can be used as a form filler, but only for login/passwords unless you want to get heavy into the Auto-type coding. Even with such heavy coding, I dont think you will get much use in trying to fill forms with it.

I use keepass in conjunction with roboform, updating the other when I add a login to one. That way, I will always have two sources for stored passwords for redundancy. Plus, KeePass has a far more versatile password generator that is also more random (not really needed, but for the very paranoid, its handy).

Also, to reko, First, load the page you want in maxthon via the "Go to url" function in keepass, then bring the keepass window back up, and hit CTRL+V to auto-type. Also, ensure that you have the text Auto-Type: before any auto-type commands in your notes section

thanks for the reply, josh. Interesting idea keeping 2 independent sources for stored passwords. Belt and suspenders...

Which global hotkey? Perhaps this is a setting I am missing. Let me know and I will see if I run into the same issue here.

Well, I am unable to confirm this in maxthon. It works fine for me. Perhaps you have something else using that hotkey?

For everyone's info if they do not know about it or did not read the help file on it...It is possible to launch local programs that is in the URL textbox of each entry with command line parameters by using cmd://.

This is the example from the KeePass Password Safe help file.

Example: cmd://C:\WinNT\Notepad.exe C:\Test\MyTestFile.txt

:)

Hi Josh,

I found your review in the DC Newsletter. Would you mind the review and screencasts being featured in my newsletter? I get about 3000 unique hits a week there.

http://freewarewiki....ifsCurrentNewsletter

I always give credit and a link-back, and I'll mention DC as well.

I have previous reviews from another friend of mine at this url, but I like your screencasts and you did a fine job.

Rather than just backing up the KeePass files?

CTRL+V to auto-type.

I've had occasional glitches where KeePass wouldn't AutoType, but I think it's usually just been a Windows wobbly.  Exiting one or both programs, then reloading, or in extremis rebooting, has usually cured the problem.  But, I've had the odd occasion where Ctrl-V didn't work but Alt-E, T  - i.e. the same thing but done by menu - did work.  I wondered, does Alt-E, T paste at a slower speed, and would that be why it worked better than Ctrl-V?

Passwords on the move! [...] BUT, this way you won't have access to them when you aren't on your computer.

So, i think it misses a fSekrit + uploader kind of thing. There should be a way to upload all your passwords (or only some selected ones) to an internet server, in an encrypted way, but such that won't need any special program to access it, which means... fSekrit!!

Only just thought of this: KeePass doesn't need to be installed, just unzip and run.  So...  how about making a self-extracting archive of KeePass itself and uploading it to your server, along with the current *.kdb files?  Then you could download and run it from anywhere.

I have no problems with this as long as mouser doesnt :) Since you said you already would, the only thing I would ask is for the link back and mention of dc.com. If we can get mouser to reply here, I think he will say go ahead.

Yes, I'll link back as always. It's going to link to this thread and DC. Also, If Josh has a homepage, I'd love to see it and include a link if it's appropriate.

I'm curious, let's see how many times I've linked to DC in the past ...
Google > site search = freewarewiki.com > search = donationcoder
Here's the result

Wowwie! Five pages of results ...

Have fun!

I appreciate the link, as I am sure mouser does on every link you post. That was really my only requirement for you putting this in your newsletter so I am now satisfied. As for a webpage, I dont have one of my own as I havent the time to make one. Perhaps one day I can get someone to design me one. Anyways, links back to DC is enough for me as these casts are done for the good of donationcoder, its users, and all the users who happen to stumble upon it.

Thanks for including this and thanks for your help in getting the word spread!

Just thought I'd mention this to anyone who finds it useful:

PortableApps.com has a portable version of KeePass that I think would be much more useful than the standard version.   Take all your passwords anywhere securely and conveniently -- that seems like a good idea to me.
Funny that programmers chose the phrase "Hello, World" while most of us are introverts.

KeePass is already portable. No need to download from a third party.
