10th Anniversary - long time member check-in thread
« on: March 05, 2015, 10:49 PM »
One of the things I wish for to celebrate the 10th anniversary of DonationCoder is to hear briefly from some of our long time olden-days members who have gone awol and haven't posted in a long time.

You don't have to say much of anything if you don't want to -- a simple "hello" would do, just so we could see your avatars and smile.

Even better would be if you gave us an update on your life, your hobbies, projects, etc.  No need to explain why you have moved on from DC -- just give a little hello for those of us who remember you fondly.

I really hope to see some posts here from our lost members -- it would make me very happy.

Bounty hunters activate! Here are the top 122 lost sheep, who haven't posted in at least 300 days, and have made 100 or more posts in the past:

Hello   :D ,

I am a member of the first days and still enjoy reading here nearly every day.

But have a hard time often also, since my English -away from computer terms- are
not existing and so mostly I avoid to read longer posts or even write myself an helpful answer.

I wish you all the best for the next ten years and kudos and thanks to the more actively members, especially to Jesse.

I have posted a list of the top lost sheep in the first post (see spoiler).. I will offer a reward to bounty hunters who can track down and convince lost sheep to post.  Warning: there appears to be one time traveler in the list -- approach with caution!
I urge all lost sheep to turn yourselves in for your own safety.

Lost sheep here!

I went over to the dark side and bought a Mac Air. I still have a Windows machine but rarely use it now.

Hey :D

I apologize about any formatting issues or things of the like; I suffered a stroke last September, and only have the use of my left hand, and my smartphone for typing. I haven't forgotten any of you, just charging life importance.

I am now 22, engaged, and before the stroke, was making big strides in my life and my goals. Not attending school, but I got a job with a local computer repair gig, and his friend, and started a month later at Edible Arrangements. Currently, I still reside in Glendale, AZ, and most other life details are unchanged.

I'll try and keep up with this thread. My contact details are up to date, and the best way to contact me one on one is with Google Hangouts.

This thread is already making me very happy just to see familiar faces.  I am sorry to hear of your stroke, but it's nice to hear you are taking it in stride and not letting it stop you.

Same as edbro. Moved on to Mac.

Mac apps are no where near as deep and feature-rich as their PC counterparts though.

Ex.: Directory Opus kicks Path Finder's ass, FlashFXP eats Transmit for lunch, ClipX is better than ClipMenu etc.

What do I do currently? I build WordPress websites using Genesis framework for clients and recently turned my 500+ tutorials on how to customize Genesis into a membership site: https://sridharkatakam.com/. There are a lot of Mac specific apps like Gradient, CodeKit and Sketch that I use regularly which have no (good, that I know of) equivalents in PCs which is one of the reasons I moved away from Windows.

On a personal front, we migrated from India to Australia as wife got a job here in Melbourne.

Btw @mouser, have you looked at Slack? It's an awesome hosted chat platform that's much slicker than IRC. And for non-profits, they will offer full free offering.

Hello there!

Oh I remember the donationcoder forums. I got in here via Cortex Command somehow. (I think this guy named Nahuel, who was Cortex Command's anti-piracy / anti-crack guy with this weird polar bear fetish (Might even have him added on Facebook), lead me here) (Edit: scancode was his nick!)

I was in ... maybe 9nth grade then, so somewhere between 14 and 16 years old. I am now 21 years old, however.

I was kind of a beginner with programming back then, but I knew decent amount of stuff still, so not a complete beginner. I think I even tried solving some of the programming puzzles found somewhere on this site and I remember doing some C++ puzzle that was related to banking (never got that one done).

Well I've continued and gotten a lot better since then. I've never wanted to do anything else than computer stuff / programming and to this day I still do not.
I will graduate with my B.Eng. degree of Software Engineering in 2 months and I will be continuing with a master's degree of software engineering after summer.
I work whilst studying in an engineering / consulting company with around 1200 emplyees. I am a system's developer / analyst and I make around 20% more than the average just graduated fella.

Recently, I've been getting into wines, cheese and coffee made from fresh ground coffee beans. I haven't gotten to actually try the coffee yet as I don't have a bean grinder yet, but I am obtaining this cool antique bean grinder from my grandma at the end of this month. Wine is costing me a lot of money, as I tend to drink quite lot of it whilst programming. I am thinking about switching to cheaper ones when I am alone.

I am looking to buy a new jacket, but I have absolutely no taste. This and this are the candidates so far.

As for what exactly I do with computers as of now; I have gotten into web stuff mostly, so Node.js, express, socket.io, HTML 5, JavaScript, jQuery, Transit, Redis, AppFrameWork, Phonegap, grunt, gulp, PHP and so on are the main things I am working with on a daily basis. I do a decent amount of C# and C++ as well, especially if I want to make games or something with proper OOP. I use SFML.NET for all my desktop games.

Pixi.js and some other WebGL frameworks are also something I make games with, when I feel like I am ready to get annoyed by JavaScript, although JavaScript is one of my favorite languages.

There has been a lot of talk around the internet about the new Raspberry PI, Unity going free and Unreal Engine going free. I am honestly not too amused. Sure that stuff is great and all and Raspberry PI is amazing feat of hardware technology, but all of those just kind of dodge my interests. I always liked making games from absolute nothing because it was challenging and I'd learn a lot. I also LOVED implementing all the required algorithms by mysel, be that a simple projection or a path tracer or something more difficult. These tools take everything I love about making games away from me as they have all the "good stuff" already built in. Besides, 3D games are boring and damn near impossible to be made by a single person with the models and all.

As for the Raspberry PI, I don't do a lot of electronics. I am 95% software guy, so that does not really interest me that much.

Hmm what else, what else... Oh I make gamehacks as a small hobby from time to time. Nothing too serious; some packet forging, datamining, memory editing and tiny dll-injections. Apparently there isn't even that much work involved with, say, making a godmode or a teleportation hack for Final Fantasy XIV, Archeage or Guild Wars 2. BeEF, Nessus and Metasploit are even more interesting to toy with.

Unfortunately I've moved mostly to Reddit and Stackoverflow when it comes to online coding communities. Thanks for the email though mouser, I will try and drop by more in the future!

See my note above about the time traveler.  Use caution when approaching this individual and stay at a distance of 10 meters at all times.

Really... 2011? I need to sort out my bookmarks, they read

Reddit
Giant Bomb
Twitter
Donation coder recent posts

Anyway, I blame Reddit for the lack of posts here! Also I actually managed to work out how autohotkey and visual studio works so I didn't have to pester other people to make my applications.

I worked at the University of Southampton when I joined and I'm still there. I look after online exams and lecture capture. My ExamStart system (remembering that I really couldn't program anything when I joined this site) is one of the only specialist University exam portals in existence (because no-one else would have use for it: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=Os46Zcuk_GU)

Hi Mouser. You may, or may not, have forgiven me for 'outbursts' which may have cut too deep.

First, let me make a minor criticism of this site infrastructure (sorry). Where is the SSL? I had to send my password plaintext to reset it. Tried using manual SSL on that page, but it "wasn't allowed on this page". SSL should be on all pages. I'm sorry, but - please.

Second, if your server costs are still as high as they were, you need to find a new host, for someone is making a living off you.

Third, I'm not getting rich myself, so what do I know. It seems to take a suit and stiff to really 'make it' in this world, so I just stick to my little niche, as do you. Probably we could have made more money together than apart, but we had ideologies that I think would have conflicted.

I've always respected that you built something with DonationCoder. People don't appreciate how much work it takes. People don't appreciate how much faith it takes.

However, I have learned, unfortunately, my choices are either be broke the rest of my life, or play the game by the rules society has set. I can try to act as morally as possible, not be shady, but gotta play by those rules, as sick as they may be. A large portion of the people who run our world are just pretenders in suits. That does give us 'real deal' people quite the advantage, *if* we know how to leverage it (rare) ;).

I've always been here. My regrets are only that I couldn't do more to help mouser, because I believe his heart is purer than most, and that I made mistakes that alienated us.

I think mouser+Bitsum could do a lot together. I just wish I knew a way to make it work. I would guess mouser also has a full time job these days? Not me, I struggle by with what I can. I tried a 'stable job', turns out most corporations are crazier than anyone you'll meet in any asylum ;p.

Life's too short and it takes too much energy to maintain grudges -- i'm glad to see you post  8)

Answering some questions:
  • SSL should work on all pages here -- i'll have to look into why it wasn't allowed on that page -- surely if it should work on any page, that would be one you would expect it to work on!
  • Server costs are still through the roof -- but changing servers is such a hassle though, and when the servers run smoothly i'm loathe to change anything..
  • I don't have a full time outside job -- but i spend much of my time on side freelance paid work to pay the bills.  DC helps, but not enough to pay bills.  It certainly helps that i have no family or retirement fund -- just trying to live month by month.  I won't say it's not a bit nerve-wracking, but then i shouldn't complain because it gives me time to think and choose my own hours, which i value more than almost anything.
  • Regarding businesses, suits, and money -- I'll be honest -- nothing about money and companies makes any sense to me -- it all seems completely insane; I don't understand how any company makes enough to survive -- let alone these corporations making billions.  It all just seems like one big pyramid scheme scam to me.  I try not to think about it or try to figure it out, it just gives me a headache.

Anyway this is a happy thread so let's not get bogged down into problems -- this is the reunion where we all hug it out  :-*

Amen. Especially when there is real evil out there ... even here in the USA. I mean, really - any differences we had, which I'l take the blame for, are pretty petty.

Refreshed the page and got your answers.

Also noticed that the primary login didn't seem SSL encrypted by default either! DIdn't check if I could manually do it, it should have default.

Maybe we can work something out in the future, a business arrangement that requires us to neither agree nor be friends, just produce, do the customer right, and earn a living at the same time. Who knows. I'll brainstorm.

On this, you gotta bite the bullet man. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent refactoring my server infastructure just to save costs or improve security. Sometimes I've taken a hit for it, but that's business.

If you're locked in, add up half the savings from one year, and I bet you could hire someone to 'unlock' you ;).

Just don't go too cheap, no 'shared cloud server' crap :)
