I have no money to invest in the stock market but I think this looks beautiful and elegant and i'm sure it will hit just the spot for some

Oddly enough, I don't know the first thing about trading stocks and such.  I just like to track and compare the stock prices of a few companies.  =]

Is it for end of day or 15-minute delayed quotes?

I predict lots of feature requests..

I foresee this as well but I want to keep it very simple and very clean.  There are many more advanced and complex applications in this field and I've really no desire to re-invent the wheel.

Is it for end of day or 15-minute delayed quotes?

I think it's the end-of-day quote as the description is "Last trade."  Again, I'm no stock expert by any means.

Thanks Skwire for this handy little program.

Will be interesting to follow what sort of "enhancement requests" it generates.

-- Probably the first would be "auto-update" -- one minute, five minute, etc.

-- Add in some additional available fields.  Open, high, low, close, volume.

-- Another really useful one -- and may not presently exist out there; for sure not free -- would be creation of a log file for some particular security.  With ability to bring the log file into Excel, etc.  One could easily then see the daily trend, or two days, or however much data the log file holds.

The above item would be particularly good for specific options prices, as that data tends to disappear and is not retrievable anywhere.

You're welcome.

I've considered adding this but the "add alerts" feature requests will come next and I really don't want to deal with that.

-- Add in some additional available fields.  Open, high, low, close, volume.

Ah, crap.  :-[  I forgot to upload v1.0.2 which adds an additional tab with many more data fields.  I've uploaded it now so please check it out.

I think you can get this type of historical data from the Yahoo Finance page.  Again, though, what I know regarding the stock market wouldn't fill a thimble so I might be (read: probably am) wrong.

Website | Download
v1.0.2 - 2013-05-29

+ Added "Yahoo! Finance lookup" to the Edit/context menu.  (Thanks, P. Loshuk)
+ Pressing Enter now performs a Yahoo! Finance site lookup.  (Thanks, P. Loshuk)

I just found the sStockQuote tool and I like it.
However I miss some important features:

1.) I prefer not to have two tabs "Stocks" and "Stocks (extended)" but only one tab where I can select the columns (by checks in a drop down menu" or by checkboxes in a settings dialog.

2.) I miss a couple of columns:
- number of shares
- buy date
- win/loss amount since previous day close
- win/loss since buy date
- buy price
- position amount (=current price * number of shares)

Could you add these features and columns in the next release?

Thank you
Peter

Thanks for trying it out.

I agree with you and admit that I took the easy way out.  The problem with GUIs is that, sometimes, coding the user options takes ten times as much work as coding the actual applications general purpose.

2.) I miss a couple of columns:
- number of shares
- buy date
- win/loss amount since previous day close
- win/loss since buy date
- buy price
- position amount (=current price * number of shares)

sStockQuote gets its data using the method found here: http://www.gummy-stuff.org/Yahoo-data.htm

As I mentioned previously in the thread, I'm no stock expert by any stretch so, if you can, please correlate the data parts you want with the codes in that table and let me know.

Well, currently sStockQuote is just something like a Ticker+Price tool.

Why not extending it to a full (or at least advanced) portfolio management tool?

The values I listed above cannot be retrieved from Yahoo but must be entered by the user.
Example: When the user bought 1000 Amazon shares then he enters this value in a new dialog window.

Together with the last price information sStockQuote gets from Yahoo he can get an overview about the absolut change in money units.

That was my original intention in writing this app.

Why not extending it to a full (or at least advanced) portfolio management tool?

A few reasons:

  • See above.  The original intent of the app was a quick way to check multiple stock prices.
  • It seems there are plenty of applications already out there that do portfolio management.  No need to reinvent the wheel.
  • I simply don't follow the stock market enough to care about portfolio management.

Great little stock tracking app!!

Would be terrific if the Market Capitalization column (extended tab) took into account M (million) vs B (billion) when sorting

Would also be helpful to show currency (for stocks on non-US markets)

Hi mthadley, and welcome to the DonationCoder site.   :)

Would be terrific if the Market Capitalization column (extended tab) took into account M (million) vs B (billion) when sorting

I've tried all the sort options available to me and, not suprisingly, none of them will sort that way.

Would also be helpful to show currency (for stocks on non-US markets)

As I mentioned before, I know very little about the stock market so I'm not quite sure what you're asking for.  sStockQuote gets its data using the method found here: http://www.gummy-stu...f.org/Yahoo-data.htm.  If you can correlate the data bits you want with the codes in that table, let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks much, superboy.  Based on how little sStockQuote actually does in terms of stocks and portfolio stuff, I'm rather surprised by the amount of positive feedback that it gets.  I mean, is there really a derth of apps that do what sStockQuote does?  I'd like to think there are many, much more capable stock apps out there.  Again, I know jack squat about stocks and the stock market so it's an honest question.

My opinion...it's more of a case of the people that would really use this are the kind of people that would have no problem throwing a ton of money for the bloomberg machines.  It's an industry with a lot of confidentiality, lots of specialized (expensive) software, etc.  They don't really care about the fact that their hardware/software is more expensive than it should be.  And most of the people using it are not tech geeks at all and doing their best to keep up with the competition.

But the bloomberg machines are just regular computers with a custom colorful keyboard and the special bloomberg software.  you can't buy them, you can only rent them for $5000 a month.  It's the most genius business plan i have ever seen.  If their software was for sale, you can easily just buy a regular computer, install their software, and it would be the same thing...maybe buy one of those keyboards with the led keys you can customize to your liking.

But times are a changing...i wonder if software like yours might be useful for really tiny shops ( a few people handling small portfolios) that wouldn't be able to justify bloomberg machines.  i can see that happening.  It's actually an interesting idea, i'd like to run it past one of my hedge fund buddies.
