I get the best of all 3 worlds by using Avant Browser which incorporates Chrome, Firefox and IE.   :P

monitoring, memory leaks, insecurities ?

 ;D

Well, it's only as good as the browser engines, though it has stripped out the Chrome spying crap, and the last two versions of Firefox has cured the memory problems.

My biggest problem with Chrome is that I can't escape the feeling that more is going on under the hood than I know about. Mostly in terms of tracking what I'm doing. Maybe it's excessive paranoia on my part. But enough companies (that should know better) have been caught playing those games that I don't think I'm completely crazy being concerned about it.

Tracking my personal browsing is an annoyance that would offend me if I discovered it happened. But I really don't care so much about that. What I do worry about is what may be seen when I access some of my clients' web-based systems. Because I have liability exposure if something leaks or gets compromised because of me.

I use Chromium because it (well, at least the Debian distribution) doesn't have "phone home" stuff nor Google Updater.  I suppose I could use SRWare Iron as well, but I've got a lazy side and Chromium is in the repos.

Chromium for Windows:

Portable:

SRWare Iron:

For Linux:

I have Opera installed, but hardly ever use it except as a novelty.  Never noticed any glitches, but no kudos either.  Maybe I should do the "immersion test" and make it my default browser for a week and see how it stacks up.

Meh.

I gave Opera a try on my Nexus 7 - it's supposed to be fast & optimized and whatnot, so that'd make sense on a tablet (even if the N7 packs some oomph). It is sloooooow. Seems to load pages slower than both Chrome and Firefox, and scrolling is extremely sluggish. And it also often chooses default zoom levels that are way too zoomed out, resulting in almost unreadable text until you zoom in manually.

Trying out SRWare Iron, and it's no faster than Chromium.  Then I read this:

Meh.  Chromium works fine enough.

Obvious good points there but he is basing some of it

calling a fork "running" is a stretch

I think he was referencing the fact that "Iron" in the IRC logs alluded to the fact he was in it for the money; namely ad revenue via (wait for it...) Google adsense he was running on his website.

The fat lady has sung - Opera is no more, to be replaced by Chromium on Desktop and webkit on Mobile:

I deeply mourn its passing

I tried to use Opera in the past (desktop) but couldn't stick with it, it annoyed me actually.. Fair well, Opera! Can't say the same for Chromium.. it's blazing fast, minimal, actually works, etc. Although I'm not too keen on the big brother aspect of things (if there were to be!)?

Hm, what is their Raison d'ĂȘtre going to be, then?

And what about their pretty huge datacenter investment that had the purpose of processing websites to serve in the special (binary html ish) format for their mobile browsers? Lost investment?

While I haven't been fond of Opera in the last many years, it's a bit sad that there's one less browser engine out there, one less team to help influence the html spec. One step closer to WebKit being the new iE6? :)

Too bad if their old HTML engine is going to be discarded. Probably no chance of them open-sourcing it.

Sites like Amazon didn't render or work properly and with pretty much zero interest to correct it. I hate to take the bigger business side of things but with their market share and real standard elements not working/rendering like the rest of (98% or so) the web, this was coming.

I read your post. It's not dev's fault when even a simple <div> leaves spaces and other things unlike every other browser, etc. Google various standards like div and others and add 'opera' right after it to your search query

Like I say, I have never had a single broken page.  Closest thing I have had, is with things like Netflix saying "We don't support anything other than Firefox & Chrome & IE"  I mean...I know 1.2% of the market share doesn't sound like much, but put it down to raw numbers, and you are potentially pissing off 300 MILLION+ people!

You must be the minority because I've watched a large number of people have issues similar to what I encountered each time I tried opera.

I've never had a problem with Amazon on Opera.

Had a problem on a few sites - often banks, HMRC, Windows Update etc - but the number of problems has been reducing over the years. Most browsers seemed to have some problems, with ie being my final fallback when all else failed.

Seems to me that the Softpedia take on the announcement is rather extreme. Opera's engine always used to be fast, but webkit is pretty fast too. Little competitive gain and a lot of cost for Opera in maintaining Presto, and it is in the mobile market that their innovations have had the most success. I'd not be surprised to see Opera using Chromium look very similar to the latest Opera using Presto. Reduces us to webkit, gecko & ie trident.

As a user I'm not sure it will make much difference to me. It's a long time since the engine was one of the reasons I chose Opera as my primary browser. What would make me unhappy would be a takeover by Facebook.

Little competitive gain and a lot of cost for Opera in maintaining Presto,

Without Presto, Opera can't be considered a competitor to anything any more.

If they adopt Chrome's rendering engine they become just one more "me-too" repackager trying to sell yet another pretty interface.
