NANY Thoughts from Developers?
« on: January 03, 2013, 01:50 PM »
I'd like to hear from other developers of NANY applications.

What kinds of things do you think about?

My main thought is that I won't be able to deliver for one reason or another.

I have one more application that I'm almost finished, but not done yet, and glad that I didn't pledge it as I wouldn't have made the deadline. (An Android application.)

So, what kinds of things do you think about for NANY?

Same as usual:
- Have/get/find/ask an idea
- Start early
- Document while coding
- Add features sparingly but complete
- Test, test, test (and fix bugs/refine features)
- Test some more
- Release just in time :D
- Update after a few days/weeks to make feature complete and bug-free

Well, what I found this year was that working on something way in advance (and not specifically for NANY) helped.  Usually it's a scramble at the last minute, and it still was as I was trying to get my other pledge done.  But I like to pledge rather than just show up so that it gives sort of a head count.

My usual problem is finding something that fits more than just one of these criteria:

  • I am able to code it
  • I would be interested in coding it
  • It would be even slightly useful to anybody at all

:D Testing is one of those things that I do as I go along, and then again at the end. You can never really test everything, unless you have a LOT of time and money to do it. Hardware, drivers, etc. etc. etc. It never ends. I had an MP3 playback error years ago... it was a driver issue that I couldn't do anything about - thank god it's gone now.

For ideas, I usually just scratch an itch. ;D

I have this problem with my time being soaked up out of the blue for reasons that I couldn't possibly have predicted, so, I'm really reluctant to jump in ahead of time and promise something. :(

This year i decided to not wait until the last minute to do mine.. It was nice to not be super stressed about finishing it in the last 24 hours like I normally find myself doing.

I am thinking about porting some of skwire's coding snacks to linux. Maybe before next years NANY. I don't know how many I can do but that is definitely in my list.

Same here. I actually wasn't even planning to participate this year, but the office project (that I did enter) showed up and I figured if I didn't do it on vacation I'd probably never get it done.

This year:

  • Kept wishing for good ways to automate testing of GUI code.
  • Thankful for DVCS (was git this time around), editor, and other tools.
  • Grateful for a responsive application author ;)
  • Appreciated languages which have something like require / include built in -- which JScript does not...

My typical NANY method, and mouser can confirm this, is that I don't do pledges; I just do releases.  I had less time this year than in years past so I was only able to release one app (and a simple one at that).

I try to solve a problem I am facing.

I made PCA since I used to get irritated by the stubborn cursor. OW was made to have my dear one's photo on any wallpaper. SAN and TWD solves my problem of forgetfulness.

The MCAT in this year NANY helps to speedup new project development.

All these apps solves my problem and I hope, may help other users too. NANY and DC gives me the platform to showcase them. One thing I learnt this year is 'do not wait for the NANY to begin, but start your engine as soon as you get time'.

Well I am facing one more problem and could not get time to solve it. Hope to release as non-NANY in coming months.

Regards,

Anand

Mouser is pondering to take the Last Minute Scramble part out of it, and let it be more of a year long process. As seductive as the calendar New Year is, it also just happens to be the busiest holiday month which can't help scheduling dev time on the app.

+1 - But I did think we were doing something Mayan this year in "honor" of the Fail-pocalypse.

Good idea. Still keep the New Year's deadline, but let people work on, gain feedback, and refine the app all year long.

That's too much time ... I liked the one that started in July.
