Android 3.2 to 4.0 Upgrade on Tab
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:37 AM »
I just upgraded from Android 3.2 to 4.0 and finding 4.0 very nice. The entire system seems much smoother now, and closer to that gorgeous animation that you get on iOS. Very much a true upgrade!

Stock ROM, Nexus 7.  Have been on 4.x since Oct.  Currently on 4.2.1

Angry Birds plays really well on this version.

Korean Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - stock. I don't bother with changing things much.

Thanks for sharing the good news -- I didn't find an upgrade on the Note to be a plus and consequently held off on upgrading an SGT 10.1 here.

Now that I've heard some good news, may be I will go through with it :)

There are some UI changes, like repositioned elements, a slightly different way to do this/that/the other thing, but so far I've not noticed anything that's difficult or frustrating. How you add app shortcuts to the main home screens is different, and I've had to re-add them now, but meh, not really a huge worry. The smoothness and speed is definitely worth it. :D

That sounds good!  Especially because I felt quite the opposite with the Note upgrade.

Vanilla Android 4.x is really great. Not so sure about the vendor-customized ROMs. )c:

Vendor-specific is already here with SDKs for proprietary hardware. One of the reasons to hope that the open systems do well. We'll see though.

I went this route with my Asus Transformer TF-101 (ie first generation Transformer) about a year ago and it's been an overall good experience. Like Renegade, I was pleased by the improved responsiveness and smoothness of the tablet. Having said that, it's a good thing that I'm "geeky" because I had to do a lot of tinkering to solve a range of issues (early FW releases of ICS from Asus reduced video output volume to almost nil and there were early random restart issues that have subsequently been only partially resolved by newer FW, etc.) in the first few months. It's fairly stable now, but Honeycomb was rock solid. ICS is not... Note, though, that vendor ROMs vary wildly in terms of stability, depending on vendor, the hardware components, yada yada yada..

I hear the Jelly Bean update (4.1) is pretty smooth as well.  Due to the Project Butter, which locks all animations to the screen refresh rate.  Haven't convinced my son to update his Acer Iconia, but with a little encouragement...

I've got 4.2.1 on my Galaxy Nexus, and it's really nice. But I do have some complaints:

  • Google Voice will randomly open up. I could be in the middle of running anything or nothing, and Google Voice will just open up. Weird.
  • Google Voice will often become unresponsive. Usually with a black/blank screen. I have to open App Info and force close it to get it to run again.
  • Vibration settings are weird. I have several things set to "Never Vibrate" but they will still vibrate when my phone is put into vibration mode. It sucks. It used to not do that. And now it means that things I don't care about (such as e-mails) will vibrate and wake me up when they arrive at 4 AM, instead of only things that I do care about (like texts).
  • Gmail label notification settings don't seem to obey my settings. One label I have set to notify for each e-mail that arrives, and the ringtone/vibration does indeed happen each time, including when a single e-mail "conversation" gets a new e-mail added to it. Another label I have set just the same way, but it only notifies once per "conversation."
  • Google Chrome sync has been broken (on my device, anyway) for a very long time. Any time I try to disable and re-enable it, it just says it is temporarily experiencing problems and it will be back up momentarily. EDIT: I just got this one fixed.
