Please help cheer it on and nudge it forward

How far back do donations count? I just donated after lurking for some 5 months. I'm feeling that I should have waited to be counted for the fundraiser. : (

Those are awesome Deo!!

I just donated after lurking for some 5 months. I'm feeling that I should have waited to be counted for the fundraiser. : (

Tao, may I suggest that a good deal of pride would be the proper emotion to feel for having donated before the fundraiser?  Nevertheless, anyone who has donated recently may message me and ask that their recent donation be counted as part of the fundraiser money, and I will adjust the thermometer accordingly.

Nice one deo.

Check this page and look at the sidebar. Maybe you can implement recent donation widget or scroller for every fundraiser? Just for visitors/members to see donations coming in...

Cheers to Fundraiser.

Nice idea.
NOTE: If anyone is not seeing the thermometer at the top of the page, force your page to refresh to get the new banner image with thermometer (thanks as always to Nudone for making such a beautiful banner with the image of Cody our mascot).

"Help us keep coding?"

So are we funding the DC servers and community or some folks who are writing software for DC?

All of the above.  perhaps i should have said "help us keep trucking"

When you make a donation -- please feel free to send it to someone specific on the site who has posted something you found useful, whether thats a piece of software or some help on the forum.  A good place to look for people to send your donationcredits to is the NANY event, or skwire who has released a huge number of utilities over the last year, or even me for my software.

[the old fundraiser said "help us keep going" i think, but i didn't want it to sound like we were in danger of not surviving.]

Which leads me to re-re-re-suggest that this site needs a software directory.

Yes.. Actually last week I finally chose a CMS platform to try to move DC too (Wordpress of all things -- yes i know it's more of a blog platform than cms platform, but it still seems like the way to go), and the idea is to move to that AND a proper software directory/repository this year, finally.

Fundraiser funds will help offset the time we spend transitioning, as always.

^ Is the forum staying separate, or is the plan to move to a wordpress forum platform also?

The forum will stay (for now) as powered by SMF, and will not change.  The cms-transition will convert all of the currently-static pages to be cms pages, and put in place a software repository.  The idea is to make the main pages of the site easier to update and make it easier for others to manage different sections of the site (software directory, reviews, blogs, etc.)

Hi Mouser.

In my senile old age I forget these things, but weren't you writing your own CMS "for programmers"? (Or am I confusing you with someone else?)

Presuming that was you, what led you to not use that for your own site?

Okay, in a mashup of my earlier request in another thread, what if we made our own DC themed materials? I have an idea brewing that I could have fun writing a few cartoons such as "Cody's Attic" and "Adventures of Cody" with an extra specialty of promoting Creative Commons. So here is a new offer from me: I'd pay $50 for a set of Cody pics of different poses and sizes ready to drop into comic panels. I'm not aiming for realism - more like a cross between Ryan North's Dinosaur Comics, and xkcd. It would also be fun to compose some funny DC ads.

I am working (hard!) on a website framework that is meant to serve as the foundation of custom user-driven websites -- and which could be used to build CMS/Blog/Forum systems.  It's tentatively named "YUMPS" and the discussion is here: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=27639.0

But there are a couple of reasons not to use it for DC:
  • It's not ready yet
  • If what DC needs is a fairly standard CMS, then the existing tools do a good job (my YUMPS project is not trying to build a "better" CMS, it's trying to build a framework that programmers can use to create custom sites that share characteristics of cms systems but don't cleanly fit into the cms category).
  • Who knows, one day DC might move to YUMPS anyway.

ps. Let's take any further discussion about YUMPS to that thread.

After every donation, but sometimes you have to force the page to reload to get the new one.

It didn't update when I just donated... is it only "fresh" donations? I donated from the permanent fund I have in the DC 'bank'

I haven't made it so it automatically counts donationCREDITS donations to the site account -- only new donations coming in (regardless of who you send your credits to; that's partly why donationcredits sending doesn't get counted or they would get double counted).

But this is really an oversight.  So if like timns, you send some donationcredits to the site account, that's just exactly as good as a donation -- so just message me and i'll adjust the thermometer!

Tim, i'm going to update it for you donation right now, stand by
