does anyone have any novel ideas about fun ways we could use the donationcredits system?

We discussed some of my ideas on mIrc.
I still think some sort of metrics need to be shown to give everyone a sense that credits are being used. Maybe a total available and a total disbursed would be an interesting display.

It is with a huge amount of pride, trepidation, and exhaustion that the DonationCredit system has now gone live on Aprl 6, 2005.

You can read all about it from the help page on DonatinCredits (go to your profile or click Cody mascot in upper right).

Please share your credits with each other and help make this a success.

Some important info:

• Donations to the site now get split evenly into money for the site and money given back to member in the form of credits to give out as they see fit.
• Look for the small golden coin on posts and software pages - if you see someone doing something you like, toss them a few credits, just to say thanks

Please take a minute and fill in the new Donation Blurb on your forum profile, it's what people see when your name comes up for them to donate to:

im preparing a little article on this.
the idea of micro-donations is not new, but i don't know of any other forum/community that has such a system for letting people easily exchange credits and donate to each other.  if anyone knows of any please let me know.

anyone who joined the site after around march 17 or so, and donated more than $5 can email me ([email protected]) with your donation amount and date, and i will credit your account with DonationCredits.

As far as I know, you guys are uniquely unique, in this sytem and in many other ways. It's all good. Keep up the fantastic work you are doing.

I haven't been by lately and I don't expect to get any more free time. I've recently started an online job in addition to my normal 8 to 5 job. Whew!

Can you believe someone would pay me to be a support person by email? I couldn't believe it but I'll really believe it when I get my first paycheck. 

Oh well, enough about me. Who gets the credit for this great new Donation system? Huh?

I've updated the info page that shows you how to make links on your own websites or programs more easily:

in short, you can use a simple url now:
http://donationcoder.com/donate/2

where the 2 would be replaced by your forum user #.

note that we encourage you to configure exteneral links so that people can donate directly to you without using the donationcredits system if they want to, and you are encouraged to write a little blurb of text that gets shown to people when they visit your donation page.

I'm hoping that we can make donationcredits and dc a trusted place where people know that if they see the little gold coin on someone's website, they will know that they are donating to someone active in the donatinware scene, and will know what to expect when clicking on that coin, and that donating will be easy.


So that people can place that simple coin and link in their programs or on their websites to accept donations.
I advise everyone to still get yourself a way for people to directly donate to you if they prefer, and specify that in your profile; that way when people click on your donation page they will have a choice whether to use the microdonation system of donationcredits, or send you the money directly.

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to ask this question in:  please move it if I've posted improperly.

I've donated at least twice, and perhaps three times, but I've not received any donation credits.  Perhaps there's something special that I have to do to specify that the donations be assigned as credits?

The first time was, of course, my intial donation to achieve membership.  I believe that I gave the second time because I'd gotten some really good forum advice about software (I'm pretty sure about this second donation, but not 100%).  The third was last night, as part of the donation drive ($50:  the first two were for much less, I think, maybe $10 or $20).

Can someone help?

Hi there. I donated twice today (20th Sept) a total of $8 that was $4 on each occasion. Do i still need to follow the link you sent in the email? I am already a supporting member and i put more credits in as i only donated a very small amount on each occasion. Hope this does not cause any problems, If so then please remember i mucked up with the donation as i meant to say $8 and for some reason only $4 was entered. SORRY IF IT CAUSES PROBLEMS

i think we got you sorted out over email, but to answer the question for any others who might wonder the same thing:

the answer is:
yes, click on those "activation" link in the email you get after you have donated, even if you are already a full member.  It will credit your account with each donation so you can give out the money to whomever on the site you wish (or to the general site account).

After being member for quite a while, I now made an additional donation of $ 28 and got credited 26.61 upon activation.

That's strange, because according to what I thought and what the help page says it should have given only 14.0 credits (50% of 28).

Is there something wrong or did I miss something? Do you treat additional donations differently (i.e., more credits per $)?

Some time ago we decided to do an experiment an give donors 100% control of their donation credits, and not automatically apply any of it to the site.

When you activate your credits the site recommends you consider giving 50% of your donation to the site account, but it's no longer mandatory.

Enough people give enough to the site that we decided to stick with this method.  It means that while we strongly ask for you to give some of your donations to the site, you are free to make a donation and give all of your credits to dc members whose work you want to support.

In fact, this change was especially motivated by people like you who might make a repeat donation to the site specifically because they want to support members on the site individually 

(note that the reason you go $26.61 in credits instead of $28 is because paypal takes their cut off the top).

I must have missed that when I activated. But it's true, I didn't read that stuff.
To set it straight , I donated a part of it to the site account now. This site is such an wonderful place on the web.

Yes, I already guessed that the rest was eaten by Paypal.
