Dropbox....without dropbox?
« on: June 05, 2011, 11:57 PM »
Saw something that could tickle the interest from several DC members regarding the creation of their own cloud backup solution.

The software is called FTPbox, is open source and in beta state. As such some features and options (from Dropbox) are likely not there (yet).

Regards.

I actually just jumped ship from Dropbox to Jungle Disk a week or so ago, because I wanted the security of encrypting files/"disks" with my own encryption key. That, and I'm getting twice the space for just $3 a month.

This looks like it would be nice for a home server kind of setup, or with some disk space with a hosting provider and being able to have it setup just how you like it. I'm looking to drop Syncplicity as well, this could do the trick. Might have to give it a whirl.

I've been using Jungle Disk for backups since 2007, but didn't realize they had anything comparable to Dropbox (i.e. offline support).  Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to take a closer look.

I'm using it in its Network Drive "mode" (whatever it is called), but it has a PC-to-PC sync that would work as a Dropbox substitution if you want offline functionality as well. The options are presented to you during the initial linkup of PC to disk.

The following bit of text under "What's Next?" looked interesting:

Transferring via SFTP.

I've been using the PC-to-PC sync for a while, and am very happy with it.  I actually did a mini-review a while back if you want to look for it.

Windows Secrets Newsletter just did a great article on Dropbox:
http://windowssecret...alternatives/#story1

They mentioned an alternative called SpiderOak which lets you use your own encryption keys:

Cool, thanks.  Here's the mini review for anyone else who's interested.

Hah, I just read a comment on the mini-review without realizing I'd written it.  At least I still agree with it. ;D

I remember SpiderOak being mentioned somewhere (most likely here) a few months back and it totally slipped my mind. Any comparisons to Jungle Disk, as far as "drag, drop and forget it"? I really like JD's pricing as well, for a pay-per-GB basis instead of Dropbox/Syncplicity/SpiderOak and their tiered pricing.

FTPBox looks pretty neat. It lacks encryption but at least this is mitigated by the fact that you choose where the files are uploaded to.

Thanks for pointing this out!

The actual site of the project http://sharpmindproj....com/project/ftpbox/

One interesting(?) blurb there... source code isn't available until its out of beta.  I don't think I've heard of anyone doing that before...

I've heard of people doing that, but I didn't know you were allowed to host your project on a site like sourceforge without having your source available...

^ That was what I meant.  I thought it had to be source available from the time that you started hosting on one of the OSS sites.
