NoteSlate - mono color tablet, nice price
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:39 PM »
I'm not too bothered about the iPad-like tablets, NoteSlate is a bit different as it's all about keeping it simple - and with a pen. Looks like a good price and could well be the machine to use instead of a sheet of paper and a pen.

Their website doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me - the language used almost makes it seem like a scam site.

But if the device was übercheap (and the act of drawing feels 100% normal, not like the laggy feel of all digitizing devices I've tried), it could be very interesting for notetaking at school.

I'd be very suspicious of a site that can't even keep their price label stuck down properly  :P

If this product doesn't turn out to be vaporware, I'll pre-order at first opportunity.

Heck, wait until nudone buys it, ('cause he buys all new gadgets, even if they don't work), and then read his review.

Isn't that true for all those sites screaming all the big marketing mumbo-jumbo :tellme:

i'll confess i didn't really read the site before posting, i was just excited by the price and pictures.

if it does, miraculously, go into production it will be interesting to see just how different the final product is - and if it doesn't double in price.

If it's real, I'd buy one to see if it works half as good as it looks. A 13-inch display would be awesome, since I'd use a tablet mostly to read .ePub books with.

I dunno if this particular device can be used to read ebooks - it seems focused solely on being a scratched that can save it's contents?

well hopefully it can really save it's contents, and better still, export - but I suspect I'm being too demanding there...
simple three button physical interface ( SAVE CURRENT SCREEN / SHOW LAST SCREEN / DELETE CURRENT SCREEN )

Iirc the specs do mention a SD card slot - so it should be able to export? Otherwise, it's useless :)

that's not quite the same kind of tablet, i.e. it doesn't have an LCD (or whatever) screen built into it. instead it's a bit like the standard type of drawing tablets that Wacom does.

also a "usb mini" - but I can see them concentrating on making it look good and not spending enough time on the practicalities. Format could be a problem...
I guess I shouldnt be negative though before the release or before more info announced

Actually, the price is an error -- if you click through, those prices are all for a DC adapter. The actual product appears to be in the 175~ range.

Actually, I have one of those.  It can be used as a wacom type tablet, but what it's primarily used for is to keep a legal pad on it and write on the legal pad- what you write is stored into memory.  It works pretty well as long as you have somewhat decent handwriting.  Otherwise, when you have to lift from the paper to cross t's or dot i's (or go from word to word) it might get a bit confused.

That one made me wince, audibly...

On topic: (A Plain Electronic Notepad, Hm...)

This part from the page sounded interesting:
NoteSlate Firmware (NSF)
- NSF will be opensourced
- NS Firmware 0.7 (basic drawing)
- NS Firmware 1.0 (+ notes, mp3)
- NS Firmware 1.5 (+ *.PDF text viewer (just bitmap mode)
- NS Firmware 2.0 (+ OCR handwritten recognition)

- "Share" client (on models with Wi-Fi), Share client UI and description will be revealed soon

I'm interested...This could have potential!

Waccom should buy this company, that will be the best buy decision for that company and we don't have to worry about issues related to tablet.
